7 TODO list for Vim *todo*
8
9This is a veeeery long list of known bugs, current work and desired
10improvements. To make it a little bit accessible, the items are grouped by
11subject. In the first column of the line a classification is used to be able
12to look for "the next thing to do":
13
14Priority classification:
159 next point release
168 next release
177 as soon as possible
186 soon
195 should be included
204 nice to have
213 consider including
222 maybe not
231 probably not
24- unclassified

30 *known-bugs*
31-------------------- Known bugs and current work -----------------------
32
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +000033Cygwin and Mac OS/X may preserve case for file names but ignore case
34differences. Use Amiga code?
35
Bram Moolenaard5bc83f2005-12-07 21:07:59 +000036SwapExists with editexisting plugin: Is there a simple way to detect ":tag
37function" and have the remote Vim jump to the tag?
38
Bram Moolenaar241a8aa2005-12-06 20:04:44 +000039When editing a file "a" that is a symbolic link to "b", while another Vim is
40editing "b", there is no warning. Follow symlink to make swap file name?
41Patch from Stefano Zacchiroli. Updated by James Vega, Dec 2.
42
Bram Moolenaar12625ca2005-11-25 19:58:47 +000043Using pipes for filter commands: provide some way to type a password, keep
Bram Moolenaar943d2b52005-12-02 00:50:49 +000044stderr in/out open for this? (Konstanti Rozinov)
45New problem: password is echoed. Put terminal in cooked mode and don't read
46from terminal?
Bram Moolenaar12625ca2005-11-25 19:58:47 +000047
Bram Moolenaar241a8aa2005-12-06 20:04:44 +000048Allow the user to handle the situation that a swap file already exists.
49Option to define a function to be called? Function would return the character
50that the dialog provides. Would make it possible to bring the other Vim to
51the foreground and abort the edit. Or hard-code this?
52
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +000053To support mapping <F4> to be used as <F4>{motion}: Add operator that
54executes a user defined function. '[ and '] marks are at start and end of
55text. ":map <F4> :set opfunc=MyOp<CR>gy".
56
57Patch from Yasuhiro Matsumoto: ":e ++enc=xxx" keeps encoding for conversion
Bram Moolenaar12625ca2005-11-25 19:58:47 +000058errors and illegal bytes. Make default to replace bad bytes/characters with
59'?' and allow for two alternatives:
60 :e ++enc=xxx ++bad=keep foo.txt
61 :e ++enc=xxx ++bad=drop foo.txt
62 :e ++enc=xxx ++bad=? foo.txt
Bram Moolenaar241a8aa2005-12-06 20:04:44 +000063(patch 6 December)
Bram Moolenaar943d2b52005-12-02 00:50:49 +000064
65ml_get error with specific vimrc and lots of plugins. (Tomi Mickelsson)
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +000066
Bram Moolenaarc64d13a2005-11-26 23:48:46 +000067Win32: preserve the hidden attribute of the viminfo file.
68
Bram Moolenaarbba577a2005-11-28 23:05:55 +000069Add ":startgreplace" to do "gR", like ":startreplace" does "R".
70
Bram Moolenaar241a8aa2005-12-06 20:04:44 +000071Alt-mousekey is currently ignored. Use it for Visual/select block?
72
Bram Moolenaarbba577a2005-11-28 23:05:55 +000073When 'delcombine' is set in Select mode before a character with a combining
Bram Moolenaar943d2b52005-12-02 00:50:49 +000074char the combining char is deleted when it shouldn't. (Tony Mechelynck, Nov
Bram Moolenaarbba577a2005-11-28 23:05:55 +00007527)
76
Bram Moolenaarcaa0fcf2005-09-07 21:21:14 +000077ccomplete:
Bram Moolenaard5cdbeb2005-10-10 20:59:28 +000078- When an option is set: In completion mode and the user types (identifier)
79 characters, advance to the first match instead of removing the popup menu.
80 If there is no match remove the selection. (Yegappan Lakshmanan)
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +000081- Complete the longest common match instead of the first match?
82- !_TAG_FILE_FORMAT and it's ilk are listed in the global completions
Bram Moolenaar07d4d732005-10-03 22:04:08 +000083- When completing something that is a structure, add the "." or "->".
Bram Moolenaarf75a9632005-09-13 21:20:47 +000084- When a typedef or struct is local to a file only use it in that file?
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +000085- Window resize when poup is displayed
86- page-up / page-down
Bram Moolenaarf75a9632005-09-13 21:20:47 +000087
Bram Moolenaard5cdbeb2005-10-10 20:59:28 +000088spelling:
Bram Moolenaarbba577a2005-11-28 23:05:55 +000089- "z?" was to be used for searching in folded text. Use something else for
Bram Moolenaar943d2b52005-12-02 00:50:49 +000090 suggestions. "z="?
Bram Moolenaard5cdbeb2005-10-10 20:59:28 +000091- When a recognized word ends in a . don't have 'spellcapcheck" match it.
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +000092- Use KEEPCASE instead of "KEP". It applies to the word including affixes
93 Hunspell also uses it.
94- Hunspell has NOSUGGEST flag (use for obscene words?)
95- Check out Hunspell 1.1.2.
Bram Moolenaar784c6142005-10-11 20:34:58 +000096- Look into hungarian dictionary:
97 http://magyarispell.sourceforge.net/rc3-beta2.zip
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +000098- Support breakpoint character ยท 0xb7 and ignore it?
99- Dutch word list should be available here: http://www.woordenlijst.org/
1008 Alternate Dutch word list at www.nederlandsewoorden.nl (use script to
101 obtain). But new Myspell wordlist will come (Hagen)
102- Finding suggestions with sound folding is slow. Somehow store the
103 sound-folded words and link to the words it comes from?
Bram Moolenaar943d2b52005-12-02 00:50:49 +0000104- Also use the spelling dictionary for dictionary completion.
105- Have "zg" and "zw" report the file that was modified. (Marvin Renich)
106- Add a command like "zg" that selects one of the files 'spellfile'.
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +0000107
Bram Moolenaar943d2b52005-12-02 00:50:49 +0000108Support saving and restoring session for X windows? It should work to do
109":mksession" and use "-S fname" for the restart command. The
110gui_x11_wm_protocol_handler() already takes care of the rest.
111global_event_filter() for GTK.
112
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +0000113In diff mode deleting lines is very slow. E.g., when diffing two .po files
114and then sourcing po/cleaup.vim.
115
1167 Add plugins for formatting. Should be able to make a choice depending on
117 the language of a file (English/Korean/Japanese/etc.).
118 Setting the 'langformat' option to "chinese" would load the
119 "format/chinese.vim" plugin.
120Edward L. Fox explains how it should be done for most Asian languages. (2005
121Nov 24)
Bram Moolenaard5cdbeb2005-10-10 20:59:28 +0000122
Bram Moolenaar5313dcb2005-02-22 08:56:13 +0000123Mac unicode patch (Da Woon Jung):
Bram Moolenaar5313dcb2005-02-22 08:56:13 +0000124- selecting proportional font breaks display
Bram Moolenaare2ac10d2005-03-07 23:26:06 +0000125- UTF-8 text causes display problems. Font replacement causes this.
Bram Moolenaar784c6142005-10-11 20:34:58 +0000126- Command-key mappings do not work. (Alan Schmitt)
Bram Moolenaaraf289d32005-10-12 21:01:44 +0000127- Add default key mappings for the command key (Alan Schmitt)
128 use http://macvim.org/OSX/files/gvimrc
Bram Moolenaar784c6142005-10-11 20:34:58 +0000129- With 'nopaste' pasting is wrong, with 'paste' Command-V doesn't work.
130 (Alan Schmitt)
Bram Moolenaar4399ef42005-02-12 14:29:27 +0000131
Bram Moolenaar943d2b52005-12-02 00:50:49 +0000132Patch to add a few flags to search(). (Benji Fisher, Nov 29, doc update Dec 1)
133Also add search???() function that returns list with lnum and col.
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +0000134
Bram Moolenaar58d98232005-07-23 22:25:46 +0000135Win32: Use the free downloadable compiler 7.1. Figure out how to do debugging
136(with Agide?) and describe it. (George Reilly)
Bram Moolenaarcaa0fcf2005-09-07 21:21:14 +0000137Try out using the free MS compiler and debugger, using Make_mvc.mak.
Bram Moolenaar6c0b44b2005-06-01 21:56:33 +0000138
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +0000139Win32: Check that installer puts menu items in "all users" dir when possible,
140not administrator dir.
141
Bram Moolenaar241a8aa2005-12-06 20:04:44 +0000142CTRL-X CTRL-L only completes from loaded buffers. Make it work for unloaded
143buffers too?
144
Bram Moolenaar8aff23a2005-08-19 20:40:30 +0000145Autoload:
Bram Moolenaar5313dcb2005-02-22 08:56:13 +0000146- Add a Vim script in $VIMRUNTIME/tools that takes a file with a list of
147 script names and a help file and produces a script that can be sourced to
148 install the scripts in the user's directories.
149 Use findfile(), so that only file names need to be given:
150 script plugin/myscript.vim
151 script autoload/mylib.vim
152 script autoload/yourlib.vim
153 helpfile doc/myscript.txt
154 For the "helpfile" item ":helptags" is run.
Bram Moolenaarbac234e2005-01-17 22:21:07 +0000155
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +0000156Add ":smap", Select mode mapping? Otherwise: ":sunmap", so that Visual mode
157mappings for normal keys can be removed from Select mode.
Bram Moolenaard5cdbeb2005-10-10 20:59:28 +0000158
Bram Moolenaard5bc83f2005-12-07 21:07:59 +0000159When expanding on the command line, recognize shell commands, such as ":!cmd".
160Complete command names by searching in $PATH. When completing file names
161escape special characters ";&<>(){}". (Adri Verhoef)
162
Bram Moolenaar8fc061c2004-12-29 21:03:02 +0000163Awaiting response:
Bram Moolenaar8fc061c2004-12-29 21:03:02 +0000164- Win32: tearoff menu window should have a scrollbar when it's taller than
165 the screen.
Bram Moolenaar58d98232005-07-23 22:25:46 +0000166- mblen(NULL, 0) also in Vim 6.3?
Bram Moolenaarb0158592005-07-22 21:54:43 +0000167
Bram Moolenaarc0197e22004-09-13 20:26:32 +0000168
Bram Moolenaarb5bf5b82004-12-24 14:35:23 +0000169PLANNED FOR VERSION 7.0:
Bram Moolenaarc0197e22004-09-13 20:26:32 +0000170
Bram Moolenaarf75a9632005-09-13 21:20:47 +0000171- Omni completion: Understands the programming language and finds matches
Bram Moolenaar4be06f92005-07-29 22:36:03 +0000172 that make sense. Esp. members of classes/structs.
173
174 It's not much different from other Insert-mode completion, use the same
Bram Moolenaarf75a9632005-09-13 21:20:47 +0000175 mechanism. Use CTRL-X CTRL-O and 'omnifunc'. Set 'omnifunc' in the
Bram Moolenaare344bea2005-09-01 20:46:49 +0000176 filetype plugin, define the function in the autoload directory.
Bram Moolenaar4be06f92005-07-29 22:36:03 +0000177
178 Separately develop the completion logic and the UI. When adding UI stuff
179 make it work for all completion methods.
180
Bram Moolenaar4be06f92005-07-29 22:36:03 +0000181 UI:
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +0000182 - Complete longest common string first, like 'wildmode' "longest:full".
183 - Add an "auto" mode: after typing a character (or string) completion is
184 done for the longest common string. plugin defines the possible
185 characters/strings. (Martin Stubenschrott)
Bram Moolenaar07d4d732005-10-03 22:04:08 +0000186 - GUI implementation of the popup menu.
Bram Moolenaarf75a9632005-09-13 21:20:47 +0000187 - When using tags, show match in preview window (function prototype,
188 struct member, etc.).
189 Or use one window for matches, another for context/info (Doug Kearns,
190 2005 Sep 13)
191 - Ideas on: http://www.wholetomato.com/
192
Bram Moolenaar4be06f92005-07-29 22:36:03 +0000193
194 Completion logic:
Bram Moolenaare344bea2005-09-01 20:46:49 +0000195 Use runtime/autoload/{filetype}complete.vim files.
196
Bram Moolenaar4be06f92005-07-29 22:36:03 +0000197 In function arguments suggest variables of expected type.
Bram Moolenaardcca87b2005-09-10 19:24:59 +0000198 Tags file has "signature" field.
Bram Moolenaare344bea2005-09-01 20:46:49 +0000199
Bram Moolenaarae5bce12005-08-15 21:41:48 +0000200 List of completions is a Dictionary with items:
201 complist[0]['text'] = completion text
202 complist[0]['type'] = type of completion (e.g. function, var, arg)
203 complist[0]['help'] = help text (e.g. function declaration)
204 complist[0]['helpfunc'] = function that shows help text
205 etc.
Bram Moolenaar4be06f92005-07-29 22:36:03 +0000206
Bram Moolenaarf75a9632005-09-13 21:20:47 +0000207 Can CTRL-] (jump to tag) include the "." and "->" to restrict the
208 number of possible matches? (Flemming Madsen)
209
210 In general: Besides completion, figure out the type of a variable
211 and use it for information.
212

218 MS-Windows only, lots of dependencies (e.g. Perl, Internet
219 explorer), uses .dll shared libraries.
Bram Moolenaare344bea2005-09-01 20:46:49 +0000220 For C++ uses $INCLUDE environment var.
221 Uses Perl for C++.
222 Uses ctags to find the info:
223 ctags -f $allTagsFile --fields=+aiKmnsSz --language-force=C++ --C++-kinds=+cefgmnpsut-dlux -u $files
224
Bram Moolenaarae5bce12005-08-15 21:41:48 +0000225 UI: popup menu with list of alternatives, icon to indicate type
226 optional popup window with info about selected alternative
227 Unrelated settings are changed (e.g. 'mousemodel').

235 Ideas from the Vim 7 BOF at SANE:
236 - It's not possible to have one solution for all languages. Design an
237 interface for completion plugins. The matches can be done in a
238 Vim-script list.
239 - For interpreted languages, use the interpreter to obtain information.
240 Should work for Java (Eclipse does this), Python, Tcl, etc.
241 Richard Emberson mentioned working on an interface to Java.
242 - Check Readline for its completion interface.
243 - Use ctags for other languages. Writing a file could trigger running
244 ctags, merging the tags of the changed file.
245 "Visual Assist" http://www.wholetomato.com/products:
246 Completion in .NET framework SharpDevelop: http://www.icsharpcode.net
247
Bram Moolenaar572cb562005-08-05 21:35:02 +0000248 - Pre-expand abbreviations, show which abbrevs would match?
Bram Moolenaar4be06f92005-07-29 22:36:03 +0000249
Bram Moolenaar3fdfa4a2004-10-07 21:02:47 +0000250- UNDO TREE: keep all states of the text, don't delete undo info.
251 When making a change, instead of clearing any future undo (thus redo)
252 info, make a new branch.
253 To navigate through the undo tree number the states of the text
254 sequentially and make it possible to go through the tree in that order.
Bram Moolenaar35a9aaa2004-10-24 19:23:07 +0000255 Use "g+++" to go forward, "g---" to go backward. Can mix - and +.
Bram Moolenaar3fdfa4a2004-10-07 21:02:47 +0000256 Could also use timestamps (to show the time and/or jump to a state five
257 minutes ago). (David Schweikert)
258 To go from one state to another: backtrack to a common state, then forward
259 again.
260 Only difficult thing: When going back in time, how to find the previous
261 text state in the tree?
262 Show the list of changes in a window to be able to select a version?
Bram Moolenaar241a8aa2005-12-06 20:04:44 +0000263 Also: See ":e" as a change operation, find the changes and add them to the
264 undo info. Needed for when an external tool changes the file.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +0000265- PERSISTENT UNDO: store undo in a file.
Bram Moolenaar3fdfa4a2004-10-07 21:02:47 +0000266 Use timestamps, so that a version a certain time ago can be found and info
267 before some time/date can be flushed. 'undopersist' gives maximum time to
268 keep undo: "3h", "1d", "2w", "1y", etc. For the file use dot and
269 extension: ".filename.un~" (like swapfile but "un~" instead of "swp").
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002707 Support WINDOW TABS. Works like several pages, each with their own
Bram Moolenaar87e25fd2005-07-27 21:13:01 +0000271 split windows.
Bram Moolenaar293ee4d2004-12-09 21:34:53 +0000272 In Emacs these are called frames. Could also call them "pages".
Bram Moolenaar87e25fd2005-07-27 21:13:01 +0000273 Use the name of the first buffer in the tab (ignoring the help window,
274 unless it's the only one). Add a number for the window count.
275 First make it work on the console. Use a line of text with highlighting.
276 Then add GUI Tabs for some systems.
277 Patch for GTK 1.2 passed on by Christian Michon, 2004 Jan 6.
Bram Moolenaar293ee4d2004-12-09 21:34:53 +0000278 Simple patch for GTK by Luis M (nov 7).
Bram Moolenaar87e25fd2005-07-27 21:13:01 +0000279 Don't forget to provide an "X" to close a tab.
280 Implementation: keep the list of windows as-is. When switching to another
281 tab make the buffers in the current windows hidden, save the window
282 layout, buildup the other window layout and fill with buffers.
283 Need to be able to search the windows in inactive tabs, e.g. for the
284 quickfix window.
285 Use "1gt" - "99gt" to switch to a tab?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +0000286- EMBEDDING: Make it possible to run Vim inside a window of another program.
287 For Xwindows this can be done with XReparentWindow().
288 For GTK Neil Bird has a patch to use Vim like a widget.
289- Add COLUMN NUMBERS to ":" commands ":line1,line2[col1,col2]cmd". Block
290 can be selected with CTRL-V. Allow '$' (end of line) for col2.
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +0000291- Add DEBUGGER INTERFACE. Implementation for gdb by Xavier de Gaye.
292 Should work like an IDE. Try to keep it generic. Now found here:
293 http://clewn.sf.net.
Bram Moolenaar5313dcb2005-02-22 08:56:13 +0000294 And the idevim plugin/script.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +0000295 To be able to start the debugger from inside Vim: For GUI run a program
296 with a netbeans connection; for console: start a program that splits the
297 terminal, runs the debugger in one window and reconnect Vim I/O to the
298 other window.
299 Wishes for NetBeans commands:
300 - make it possible to have 'defineAnnoType' also handle terminal colors.
301 - send 'balloonText' events for the cursor position (using CursorHold ?)
302 in terminal mode.
Bram Moolenaar1cd871b2004-12-19 22:46:22 +0000303- ECLIPSE plugin. Problem is: the interface is very complicated. Need to
304 implement part in Java and then connect to Vim. Some hints from Alexandru
305 Roman, 2004 Dec 15. Should then also work with Oracle Jdeveloper, see JSR
306 198 standard http://www.jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=198.
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +0000307 Eclim does it: http://eclim.sourceforge.net/ (Eric Van Dewoestine)
Bram Moolenaar943d2b52005-12-02 00:50:49 +0000308 Plugin that uses a terminal emulator: http://vimplugin.sf.net
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +0000309- STICKY CURSOR: Add a way of scrolling that leaves the cursor where it is.
310 Especially when using the scrollbar. Typing a cursor-movement command
311 scrolls back to where the cursor is.
Bram Moolenaar3fdfa4a2004-10-07 21:02:47 +0000312- Execute a function with standard option values. No need to save and
313 restore option values. Especially useful for new options. Problem: how
314 to avoid a performance penalty (esp. for string options)?
Bram Moolenaard4755bb2004-09-02 19:12:26 +00003158 Support four composing/combining characters, needed for Hebrew. (Ron Aaron)
316 Add the 'maxcombining' option to set the nr. of composing characters.
Bram Moolenaar3fdfa4a2004-10-07 21:02:47 +0000317 At the same time support more colors (use two bytes when necessary).
Bram Moolenaarcafda4f2005-09-06 19:25:11 +00003188 Searching for a composing character by itself should work. Perhaps "."
319 with a composing char should work too.
Bram Moolenaarf4b8e572004-06-24 15:53:16 +0000320- Add a few more things to 'diffopt': "horizontal", "vertical",
321 "foldcolumn". (Benji Fisher, 2004 Jun 21)
322- FileChangedShellPost autocommand event: after (not) reloading a changed
323 file. Can be used to update statusline oslt.
Bram Moolenaar86b68352004-12-27 21:59:20 +0000324- VimResized autocmd event: When the Vim window has been resized (SIGWINCH)
325 patch from Yakov Lerner, 2003 July 24.
326 It's not clear that this doesn't cause problems when the executed
327 commands do something like changing 'lines'. Esp. because the
328 screen has not yet been allocated with the new size.
Bram Moolenaar35a9aaa2004-10-24 19:23:07 +0000329- Running a shell command from the GUI still has limitations. Look into how
330 the Vim shell project can help: http://vimshell.wana.at
Bram Moolenaarf4b8e572004-06-24 15:53:16 +0000331- Displaying size of Visual area: use 24-33 column display.
Bram Moolenaar943d2b52005-12-02 00:50:49 +0000332 When selecting multiple lines, up to about a screenful, also count the
Bram Moolenaar485db9b2005-01-31 19:23:41 +0000333 characters.
Bram Moolenaar798c5a72005-01-16 22:06:30 +0000334- Mac: Unicode input and display (Eckehard Berns, 2004 June 27)
335 Other patch from Da Woon Jung, 2005 Jan 16.
Bram Moolenaarcfbc5ee2004-07-02 15:38:35 +00003368 Add patch from Muraoka Taro (Mar 16) to support input method on Mac?
337 New patch 2004 Jun 16
Bram Moolenaar592e0a22004-07-03 16:05:59 +00003389 Add cursor-column highlighting. Enable it with 'cursorcolumn' option,
339 set highlighting with "CursorColumn" group. Useful for aligning text.
340 Also cursor-row highlighting. Patch from Yasuhiro Matsumoto for
341 underlining the cursor line: 2004 Jun 17. Should use highlight group
342 instead.
343 Alternative: when 'number' is set highlight the number of the current
344 line.
Bram Moolenaar325b7a22004-07-05 15:58:32 +00003457 Make ":startinsert" command work directly for functions and scripts?
346 Also make it possible to append (it's difficult at end of line).
Bram Moolenaar21cf8232004-07-16 20:18:37 +0000347- When using 'incsearch" CTRL-R CTRL-W gets the word under the cursor, but
348 the part that already matched is doubled then. Remove the part of the
349 word that would be doubled. Make it work line CTRL-N in Insert mode.
Bram Moolenaarab79bcb2004-07-18 21:34:53 +0000350- Add Lua interface? (Wolfgang Oertl)
Bram Moolenaard4755bb2004-09-02 19:12:26 +0000351- "onemore" flag in 'virtualedit': move cursor past end of line. Patch by
352 Mattias Flodin (2004 Jul 30)
Bram Moolenaarb5bf5b82004-12-24 14:35:23 +0000353- In a :s command multi-byte characters should also be upper/lower cased
354 with \u, \U, etc.
Bram Moolenaarb0158592005-07-22 21:54:43 +00003558 Add a command to jump to a certain kind of tag. Allow the user to specify
356 values for the optional fields. E.g., ":tag size type=m".
357 Also allow specifying the file and command, so that the result of
358 taglist() can be used.
Bram Moolenaard4755bb2004-09-02 19:12:26 +0000359
Bram Moolenaarc0761132005-03-18 20:30:32 +0000360Adjust src/main.aap for installing manpages like in Makefile.
361
Bram Moolenaar78984f52005-08-01 07:19:10 +0000362When editing a file with both utf-8 and latin1 text Vim always falls back to
363latin1. Add a command to convert the latin1 characters to utf-8?
364 :unmix utf-8,latin1 filename
365Would only work when 'encoding' is utf-8.
366Also: command to search for illegal utf-8 byte sequence?
367
Bram Moolenaar34cdc3e2005-05-18 22:24:46 +0000368Also generate the .pdb file that can be used to generate a useful crash report
369on MS-Windows. (George Reilly)
370
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +0000371Add strtol() to avoid the problems with leading zero causing octal conversion.
372
373Try new POSIX tests, made after my comments. (Geoff Clare, 2005 April 7)
Bram Moolenaar9ba0eb82005-06-13 22:28:56 +0000374Version 1.5 is in ~/src/posix/1.5. (Lynne Canal)
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +0000375
376Add a 'tool' window: behaves like a preview window but there can be several.
377Don't count it in only_one_window(). (Alexei Alexandrov)
378
Bram Moolenaar60c78922005-03-20 22:40:14 +0000379Win32: Patch for Korean IME. (Yusung, 2005 March 21)
380
Bram Moolenaar520470a2005-06-16 21:59:56 +0000381When "= evaluation results in a List, use it as a sequence of lines.
Bram Moolenaarc998e3c2005-06-14 22:13:23 +0000382
Bram Moolenaard4755bb2004-09-02 19:12:26 +0000383Support ":set syntax=cpp.doxygen"? Suggested patch by Michael Geddes (9 Aug
3842004). Should also work for 'filetype'.
385
Bram Moolenaarc0197e22004-09-13 20:26:32 +0000386For manipulating buffers without opening a new window, support Virtual
387windows. Example:
388 :virtwin let l = GetBufLine(4, 10)
389 :fun GetBufLine(bufnr, lnum)
390 : exe "buffer " . a:bufnr
391 : return getline(lnum)
392 :endfun
393The getline() and setline() functions could work for other buffers, using a
394Virtual window.
395A Virtual window only exists for one command. There can be several (for
396nested commands). The window works as if it comes after the last window, size
397is the Vim window size, but it's never displayed.
398
399Win32: In the generated batch files, use $VIMRUNTIME if it's set. Examples by
400Mathias Michaelis (2004 Sep 6)
401Also place vimtutor.bat in %windir%?
Bram Moolenaarab79bcb2004-07-18 21:34:53 +0000402
Bram Moolenaar241a8aa2005-12-06 20:04:44 +0000403Add gui_mch_browsedir() for Motif, Mac OS/X.
Bram Moolenaar7b0294c2004-10-11 10:16:09 +0000404
Bram Moolenaar342337a2005-07-21 21:11:17 +0000405Add extra list of file locations. A bit like the quickfix list, but there is
406one per window. Can be used with:
407 :ltag list of matching tags, like :tselect
408Commands to use the location list:
409 :lnext next location
410 :lprevious :lNext previous location
411 :lnfile location in next file
412 :lNfile :lpfile location in previous file
413 :lrewind :lfirst first location
414 :llast last location
415 :ll [N] go to location N (current one if N omitted)
416 :lwindow open window with locations (separate from quickfix window)
417 :lopen open window with locations
418 :lclose close window with locations
419 :llist list locations
420 :lfile read locations from file using 'errorformat'
421 :lgetfile idem, don't jump to first one
422 :lbuffer idem, from current buffer.
423
Bram Moolenaar293ee4d2004-12-09 21:34:53 +0000424HTML indenting can be slow, find out why. Any way to do some kind of
Bram Moolenaarb2956cd2005-01-27 14:42:53 +0000425profiling for Vim script? At least add a function to get the current time in
426usec. reltime([start, [end]])
427 reltime().sec == seconds, reltime().usec = microseconds
428 reltime(start) current time relative to [start]
429 echo timestring(reltime(start), 3) (3 is nr of digits after dot)
430 reltime(start, end) difference between start and end
Bram Moolenaar4399ef42005-02-12 14:29:27 +0000431Real Profiling:
432 - :profile start /tmp/somefile (append if exists)
433 - :profile pause
434 - :profile resume
435 - :profile stop
436 - per function line
437 - self, Vim and total time (incl system time)
438 - dump results in file on exit or when stopped.
Bram Moolenaar293ee4d2004-12-09 21:34:53 +0000439
Bram Moolenaarbee0c5b2005-02-07 22:03:36 +0000440Add more tests for all new functionality in Vim 7. Especially new functions.

529
530
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +0000531Vi incompatibility:
5328 With undo/redo only marks in the changed lines should be changed. Other
533 marks should be kept. Vi keeps each mark at the same text, even when it
534 is deleted or restored. (Webb)
535 Also: A mark is lost after: make change, undo, redo and undo.
536 Example: "{d''" then "u" then "d''": deletes an extra line, because the ''
537 position is one line down. (Veselinovic)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00005388 When stdin is not a tty, and Vim reads commands from it, an error should
539 make Vim exit.
5407 Unix Vim (not gvim): Typing CTRL-C in Ex mode should finish the line
541 (currently you can continue typing, but it's truncated later anyway).
542 Requires a way to make CTRL-C interrupt select() when in cooked input.
5438 When loading a file in the .exrc, Vi loads the argument anyway. Vim skips
544 loading the argument if there is a file already. When no file argument
545 given, Vi starts with an empty buffer, Vim keeps the loaded file. (Bearded)
5466 In Insert mode, when using <BS> or <Del>, don't wipe out the text, but
547 only move back the cursor. Behaves like '$' in 'cpoptions'. Use a flag
548 in 'cpoptions' to switch this on/off.
5498 When editing a file which is a symbolic link, and then opening another
550 symbolic link on the same file, Vim uses the name of the first one.
551 Adjust the file name in the buffer to the last one used? Use several file
552 names in one buffer???
553 Also: When first editing file "test", which is symlink to "test2", and
554 then editing "test2", you end up editing buffer "test" again. It's not
555 logical that the name that was first used sticks with the buffer.
5567 The ":undo" command works differently in Ex mode. Edit a file, make some
557 changes, "Q", "undo" and _all_ changes are undone, like the ":visual"
558 command was one command.
Bram Moolenaareaa48e72005-06-08 22:07:37 +0000559 On the other hand, an ":undo" command in an Ex script only undoes the last
560 change (e.g., use two :append commands, then :undo).
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00005617 The ":map" command output overwrites the command. Perhaps it should keep
562 the ":map" when it's used without arguments?
5637 CTRL-L is not the end of a section? It is for Posix! Make it an option.
5647 Implement 'prompt' option. Init to off when stdin is not a tty.
5657 CTRL-T in Insert mode inserts 'shiftwidth' of spaces at the cursor. Add a
566 flag in 'cpoptions' for this.
5677 Add a way to send an email for a crashed edit session. Create a file when
568 making changes (containing name of the swap file), delete it when writing
569 the file. Supply a program that can check for crashed sessions (either
570 all, for a system startup, or for one user, for in a .login file).
5717 Vi doesn't do autoindenting when input is not from a tty (in Ex mode).
5727 "z3<CR>" should still use the whole window, but only redisplay 3 lines.
5737 ":tag xx" should move the cursor to the first non-blank. Or should it go
574 to the match with the tag? Option?
5757 Implement 'autoprint'/'ap' option.
5767 Add flag in 'cpoptions' that makes <BS> after a count work like <Del>
577 (Sayre).
5787 Add flag in 'cpoptions' that makes operator (yank, filter) not move the
579 cursor, at least when cancelled. (default Vi compatible).
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00005807 This Vi-trick doesn't work: "Q" to go to Ex mode, then "g/pattern/visual".
581 In Vi you can edit in visual mode, and when doing "Q" you jump to the next
582 match. Nvi can do it too.
5837 Support '\' for line continuation in Ex mode for these commands: (Luebking)
584 g/./a\ g/pattern1/ s/pattern2/rep1\\
585 line 1\ line 2\\
586 line 2\ line 3\\
587 . line4/
5886 ":e /tmp/$tty" doesn't work. ":e $uid" does. Is $tty not set because of
589 the way the shell is started?
5906 Vi compatibility (optional): make "ia<CR><ESC>10." do the same strange
591 thing. (only repeat insert for the first line).
592
593
594GTK+ 1 (OK in GTK 2):
5958 When menus are disabled, 'm' removed from 'guioptions', Alt-F still pops
596 up the File menu. Cannot reproduce this: gives a warning for a NULL
597 pointer if the menu was never displayed.
5988 When using "gvim -geom 40x30" or setting 'columns' in .gvimrc or with a
599 GUIEnter autocommand, the width is still set to fit the toolbar. Also
600 happens when changing the font. How to avoid that the toolbar specifies
601 the minimal window width?
6028 When using a theme with different scrollbars (gtkstep), the scrollbars can
603 be too narrow. (Drazen Kacar)
6048 Font "7x14" has a bold version "7x14bold". Try to find the bold font by
605 appending "bold" when there are not 14 dashes.
606
607GTK+ GUI known bugs:
6088 GTK 2: Combining UTF-8 characters not displayed properly in menus (Mikolaj
609 Machowski) They are displayed as separate characters. Problem in
610 creating a label?
Bram Moolenaar6e7c7f32005-08-24 22:16:11 +00006118 GTK 2: Combining UTF-8 characters are sometimes not drawn properly.
612 Depends on the font size, "monospace 13" has the problem. Vim seems to do
613 everything right, must be a GTK bug. Is there a way to work around it?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00006149 Can't paste a Visual selection from GTK-gvim to vim in xterm or Motif gvim
615 when it is longer than 4000 characters. Works OK from gvim to gvim and
616 vim to vim. Pasting through xterm (using the shift key) also works.
617 It starts working after GTK gvim loses the selection and gains it again.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +0000618
619Win32 GUI known bugs:
6208 On Windows 98 the unicows library is needed to support functions with UCS2
621 file names. Can we load unicows.dll dynamically?
6228 The -P argument doesn't work very well with many MDI applications.
623 The last argument of CreateWindowEx() should be used, see MSDN docs.
624 Tutorial: http://win32assembly.online.fr/tut32.html
6258 In eval.c, io.h is included when MSWIN32 is defined. Shouldn't this be
626 WIN32? Or can including io.h be moved to vim.h? (Dan Sharp)
6277 Windows XP: When using "ClearType" for text smoothing, a column of yellow
628 pixels remains when typing spaces in front of a "D" ('guifont' set to
629 "lucida_console:h8").
6306 Win32 GUI: With "-u NONE -U NONE" and doing "CTRL-W v" "CTRL-W o", the ":"
631 of ":only" is highlighted like the cursor. (Lipelis)
Bram Moolenaard4755bb2004-09-02 19:12:26 +00006328 When 'encoding' is "utf-8", should use 'guifont' for both normal and wide
633 characters to make Asian languages work. Win32 fonts contain both
634 type of characters.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00006357 When font smoothing is enabled, redrawing can become very slow. The reason
636 appears to be drawing with a transparent background. Would it be possible
637 to use an opaque background in most places?
6388 Use another default for 'termencoding': the active codepage. Means that
639 when 'encoding' is changed typing characters still works properly.
640 Alternative: use the Unicode functions to obtain typed characters.
6418 Win32: Multi-byte characters are not displayed, even though the same font
642 in Notepad can display them. (Srinath Avadhanula) Try with the
643 UTF-8-demo.txt page with Andale Mono.
6447 The cursor color indicating IME mode doesn't work properly. (Shizhu Pan,
645 2004 May 9)
6468 Win32: When clicking on the gvim title bar, which gives it focus, produces
647 a file-changed dialog, after clicking on a button in that dialog the gvim
648 window follows the mouse. The button-up event is lost. Only with
649 MS-Windows 98?
650 Try this: ":set sw ts", get enter-prompt, then change the file in a
651 console, go back to Vim and click "reload" in the dialog for the changed
652 file: Window moves with the cursor!
653 Put focus event in input buffer and let generic Vim code handle it?
6548 When activating the Vim window with mouse click, don't move cursor to
655 mouse position. Catch WM_MOUSEACTIVATE. (Luevelsmeyer)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00006568 Win32: When mouse is hidden and in the toolbar, moving it won't make it
657 appear. (Sami Salonen)
6588 Windows NT: writing to aux.* makes Vim hang. (Acevedo)
6598 Win32 GUI: With maximized window, ":set go-=r" doesn't use the space that
660 comes available. (Poucet) It works OK on Win 98 but doesn't work on Win
661 NT 4.0. Leaves a grey area where the scrollbar was. ":set go+=r" also
662 doesn't work properly.
6638 When Vim is minimized and when maximizing it a file-changed dialog pops
664 up, Vim isn't maximized. It should be done before the dialog, so that it
665 appears in the right position. (Webb)
6669 When selecting at the more-prompt or hit-enter-prompt, the right mouse
667 button doesn't give popup menu.
668 At the hit-enter prompt CTRL-Y doesn't work to copy the modeless
669 selection.
670 On the command line, don't get a popup menu for the right mouse button.
671 Let the middle button paste selected text (not the clipboard but the
672 non-Visual selection)? Otherwise CTRL-Y has to be used to copy the text.
6738 When 'grepprg' doesn't execute, the error only flashes by, the
674 user can hardly see what is wrong. (Moore)
675 Could use vimrun with an "-nowait" argument to only wait when an error
676 occurs, but "command.com" doesn't return an error code.
6778 When the 'shell' cannot be executed, should give an appropriate error msg.
678 Esp. for a filter command, currently it only complains the file could not
679 be read.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00006807 Add an option to add one pixel column to the character width? Lucida
681 Console italic is wider than the normal font ("d" overlaps with next char).
682 Opposite of 'linespace': 'columnspace'.
6837 At the hit-enter prompt scrolling now no longer works. Need to use the
684 keyboard to get around this. Pretend <CR> was hit when the user tries to
Bram Moolenaar4463f292005-09-25 22:20:24 +0000685 scroll?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00006867 Scrollbar width doesn't change when selecting other windows appearance.
687 Also background color of Toolbar and rectangle below vert. scrollbar.
6887 "!start /min cmd" should run in a minimized window, instead of using
689 "/min" as the command name. (Rogall)
6906 Drawing text transparently doesn't seem to work (when drawing part cursor).
6918 CTRL key doesn't always work in combination with ALT key. It does work
692 for function keys, not for alphabetic characters. Perhaps this is because
693 CTRL-ALT is used by Windows as AltGr?
6948 CTRL-- doesn't work for AZERTY, because it's CTRL-[ for QWERTY. How do we
695 know which keyboard is being used?
6967 When scrolling, and a background color is dithered, the dither pattern
697 doesn't always join correctly between the scrolled area and the new drawn
698 area (Koloseike).
6998 When gui_init_font() is called with "*", p_guifont is freed while it might
700 still be used somewhere. This is too tricky, do the font selection first,
701 then set the new font by name (requires putting all logfont parameters in
702 the font name).
703
704
705Athena and Motif:
Bram Moolenaar5313dcb2005-02-22 08:56:13 +00007066 New Motif toolbar button from Marcin Dalecki:
707 - When the mouse pointer is over an Agide button the red becomes black.
708 Something with the way colors are specified in the .xpm file.
709 - The pixmap is two pixels smaller than it should be. The gap is filled
710 with grey instead of the current toolbar background color.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00007119 Can configure be changed to disable netbeans if the Xpm library is
712 required and it's missing?
7138 When using the resource "Vim*borderwidth 2" the widgets are positioned
714 wrong.
7159 XIM is disabled by default for SGI/IRIX. Fix XIM so that 'imdisable' can
716 be off by default.
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00007179 XIM doesn't work properly for Athena/Motif. (Yasuhiro Matsumoto) For now,
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +0000718 keep XIM active at all times when the input method has the preediting
719 flag.
7208 X11: A menu that contains an umlaut is truncated at that character.
721 Happens when the locale is "C", which uses ASCII instead of IS0-8859-1.
722 Is there a way to use latin1 by default? Gnome_init() seems to do this.
7238 Perhaps use fontsets for everything?
7246 When starting in English and switching the language to Japanese, setting
725 the locale with ":lang", 'guifontset' and "hi menu font=", deleting all
726 menus and setting them again, the menus don't use the new font. Most of
727 the tooltips work though...
7287 Motif: when using a file selection dialog, the specified file name is not
729 always used (when specifying a filter or another directory).
7308 When 'encoding' is different from the current locale (e.g., utf-8) the
731 menu strings don't work. Requires conversion from 'encoding' to the
732 current locale. Workaround: set 'langmenu'.
733
734
735Athena GUI:
7369 When dragging the scrollbar thumb very fast, focus is only obtained in
737 the scrollbar itself. And the thumb is no longer updated when moving
738 through files.
7397 The file selector is not resizable. With a big font it is difficult to
740 read long file names. (Schroeder)
7414 Re-write the widget attachments and code so that we will not have to go
742 through and calculate the absolute position of every widget every time the
743 window is refreshed/changes size. This will help the "flashing-widgets"
744 problem during a refresh.
7455 When starting gvim with all the default colors and then typing
746 ":hi Menu guibg=cyan", the menus change color but the background of the
747 pullright pixmap doesn't change colors.
748 If you type ":hi Menu guibg=cyan font=anyfont", then the pixmap changes
749 colors as it should.
750 Allocating a new pixmap and setting the resource doesn't change the
751 pullright pixmap's colors. Why? Possible Athena bug?
752
753
754Motif GUI:
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00007557 Use XmStringCreateLocalized() instead of XmStringCreateSimple()?
756 David Harrison says it's OK (it exists in Motif 1.2).
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00007578 Lesstif: When deleting a menu that's torn off, the torn off menu becomes
758 very small instead of disappearing. When closing it, Vim crashes.
759 (Phillipps)
760
761
762GUI:
7639 On Solaris, creating the popup menu causes the right mouse button no
764 longer to work for extending the selection. (Halevy)
7659 When running an external program, it can't always be killed with CTRL-C.
Bram Moolenaar51ac12f2005-07-02 23:21:11 +0000766 e.g., on Solaris 5.5, when using "K" (Keech). Other 'guipty' problems on
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +0000767 Solaris 2.6. (Marley)
7689 On Solaris: Using a "-geometry" argument, bigger than the window where Vim
769 is started from, causes empty lines below the cmdline. (raf)
7708 X11 GUI: When menu is disabled by excluding 'm' from 'guioptions', ALT key
771 should not be used to trigger a menu (like the Win32 version).
7728 When setting 'langmenu', it should be effective immediately. Store both
773 the English and the translated text in the menu structure. Re-generate
774 the translation when 'langmenu' has changed.
7758 Basic flaw in the GUI code: NextScreen is updated before calling
776 gui_write(), but the GUI code relies on NextScreen to represent the state
777 of where it is processing the output.
778 Need better separation of Vim core and GUI code.
7798 When fontset support is enabled, setting 'guifont' to a single font
780 doesn't work.
7818 Menu priority for sub-menus for: Amiga, BeOS.
7828 Add menu separators for Amiga, RISCOS.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00007838 Add way to specify the file filter for the browse dialog. At least for
784 browse().
7858 Add dialog for search/replace to other GUIs? Tk has something for this,
786 use that code? Or use console dialog.
7878 When selecting a font with the font dialog and the font is invalid, the
788 error message disappears too quick.
Bram Moolenaar5313dcb2005-02-22 08:56:13 +00007897 More features in the find/replace dialog:
790 - regexp on/off
791 - search in selection/buffer/all buffers/directory
792 when all buffers/directory is used:
793 - filter for file name
794 when directory is used:
795 - subdirectory on/off
796 - top directory browser
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00007978 gui_check_colors() is not called at the right moment. Do it much later,
798 to avoid problems.
7998 gui_update_cursor() is called for a cursor shape change, even when there
800 are mappings to be processed. Only do something when going to wait for
801 input. Or maybe every 100 ms?
8028 X11: When the window size is reduced to fit on screen, there are blank
803 lines below the text and bottom scrollbar. "gvim -geometry 80x78+0+0".
804 When the "+0+0" is omitted it works.
8058 When starting an external command, and 'guipty' set, BS and DEL are mixed
806 up. Set erase character somehow?
8078 A dead circumflex followed by a space should give the '^' character
808 (Rommel). Look how xterm does this.
809 Also: Bednar has some code for dead key handling.
810 Also: Nedit 5.0.2 with USE_XMIM does it right. (Gaya)
8118 The compose key doesn't work properly (Cepas). Both for Win32 and X11.
8127 The cursor in an inactive window should be hollow. Currently it's not
813 visible.
8147 GUI on Solaris 2.5.1, using /usr/dt/..: When gvim starts, cursor is
815 hollow, after window lowered/raised it's OK. (Godfrey)
8167 When starting GUI with ":gui", and window is made smaller because it
817 doesn't fit on the screen, there is an extra redraw.
8188 When setting font with .Xdefaults, there is an extra empty line at the
819 bottom, which disappears when using ":set guifont=<Tab>". (Chadzelek)
8208 When font shape changes, but not the size, doing ":set font=" does not
821 redraw the screen with the new font. Also for Win32.
822 When the size changes, on Solaris 2.5 there isn't a redraw for the
823 remaining part of the window (Phillipps).
824- Flashes really badly in certain cases when running remotely from a Sun.
8254 Re-write the code so that the highlighting isn't changed multiple times
826 when doing a ":hi clear". The color changes happen three or more times
827 currently. This is very obvious on a 66Mhz 486.
828
829
830MSDOS/DJGPP:
8319 Pressing CTRL-C often crashes the console Vim runs in. (Ken Liao)
832 When 'bioskey' isn't set it doesn't happen. Could be a problem with the
833 BIOS emulation of the console. Version 5.6 already had this problem.
8348 DJGPP: "cd c:" can take us to a directory that no longer exists.
835 change_drive() doesn't check this. How to check for this error?
8369 The 16 bit version runs out of memory very quickly. Should find unused
837 code and reduce static data.
8389 Crash when running on Windows 98 in a console window and pressing CTRL-C.
839 Happens now and then. When debugging Vim in gdb this also happens. Since
840 the console crashes, might be a bug in the DOS console. Resetting
841 'bioskey' avoids it, but then CTRL-C doesn't work.
8429 DOS: Make CTRL-Fx and ALT-Fx work.
843 CTRL-F1 = CE-5E, CTRL-F2 = CE-5F, .., CTRL-F10 = CE-67
844 ALT-F1 = CE-68, ALT-F2 = CE-69, .., ALT-F10 = CE-71
845 Shifted cursor keys produce same codes as unshifted keys. Use bioskey(2)
846 to get modifier mask for <S-C-M-Fx>.
847 Use K_SPECIAL/KS_MODIFIER codes to insert modifier mask in input stream?
848 Make this work like in Win32 console.
849 Mapping things like <M-A> doesn't work, because it generates an extended
850 key code. Use a translation table?
8519 Can't read an opened swap file when the "share" command has not been used.
852 At least ignore the swap files that Vim has opened itself.
8538 Use DJGPP 2.03.
8548 The Dos32 version (DJGPP) can't use long file names on Windows NT.
855 Check if new package can be used (v2misc/ntlfn08[bs].zip).
8568 setlocale() is bogus.
8578 Vim busy waits for new characters or mouse clicks. Should put in some
858 sort of sleep, to avoid eating 50% of the CPU time. Test on an unpatched
859 Windows 95 system!
8608 DJGPP: when shell is bash, make fails. (Donahoe)
Bram Moolenaar51ac12f2005-07-02 23:21:11 +00008617 Hitting CTRL-P twice quickly (e.g., in keyword completion) on a 8088
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +0000862 machine, starts printer echo! (John Mullin).
8637 MSDOS 16 bit version can't work with COMSPEC that has an argument, e.g.:
864 COMSPEC=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM /E:4096 (Bradley)
865 Caused by BCC system() function (Borland "make" has the same problem).
8668 Mouse: handle left&right button pressed as middle button pressed. Add
867 modifier keys shift, ctrl and alt.
8687 When too many files are open (depends on FILES), strange things happen.
869 The Dos16 version runs out of memory, in the Dos32 version "!ls" causes a
870 crash. Another symptom: .swp files are not deleted, existing files are
871 "[New file]".
8727 DJGPP version doesn't work with graphics display mode. Switch to a mode
873 that is supported?
8748 DJGPP: ":mode" doesn't work for many modes. Disable them.
8758 DJGPP: When starting in Ex mode, shouldn't clear the screen. (Walter
876 Briscoe)
877
878
879MSDOS, OS/2 and Win32:
8808 OS/2: Add backtick expansion. Undefine NO_EXPANDPATH and use
881 gen_expand_wildcards().
8828 OS/2: Add clipboard support? See example clipbrd.exe from Alexander
883 Wagner.
8848 OS/2: Add Extended Attributes support and define HAVE_ACL.
8858 OS/2: When editing a file name "foo.txt" that is actually called FOO.txt,
886 writing uses "foo.txt". Should obtain the real file name.
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +00008878 Should $USERPROFILE be preferred above $HOMEDRIVE/$HOMEPATH? No, but it's
888 a good fallback, thus use:
889 $HOME
890 $HOMEDRIVE$HOMEPATH
891 SHGetSpecialFolderPath(NULL, lpzsPath, CSIDL_APPDATA, FALSE);
892 $USERPROFILE
893 SHGetSpecialFolderPath(NULL, lpzsPath, CSIDL_COMMON_APPDATA, FALSE);
894 $ALLUSERSPROFILE
895 $SYSTEMDRIVE\
896 C:\
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00008978 Win32 console: <M-Up> and <M-Down> don't work. (Geddes) We don't have
898 special keys for these. Should use modifier + key.
8998 Win32 console: caps-lock makes non-alpha keys work like with shift.
900 Should work like in the GUI version.
9018 Environment variables in DOS are not case sensitive. Make a define for
902 STRCMP_ENV(), and use it when comparing environment var names.
9038 Setting 'shellslash' has no immediate effect. Change all file names when
904 it is set/reset? Or only use it when actually executing a shell command?
9058 When editing a file on a Samba server, case might matter. ":e file"
906 followed by ":e FILE" will edit "file" again, even though "FILE" might be
907 another one. Set last used name in buflist_new()? Fix do_ecmd(), etc.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00009088 When a buffer is editing a file like "ftp://mach/file", which is not going
909 to be used like a normal file name, don't change the slashes to
910 backslashes. (Ronald Hoellwarth)
911
912
913Windows 95:
9148 Editing a file by it's short file name and writing it, makes the long file
915 name disappear. Setting 'backupcopy' helps.
916 Use FindFirstFile()->cAlternateFileName in fname_case() (George Reilly).
9178 Doing wildcard expansion, will match the short filename, but result in the
918 long filename (both DJGPP and Win32).
919
920
921Win32 console:
9229 When editing a file by its short file name, it should be expanded into its
923 long file name, to avoid problems like these: (Mccollister)
924 1) Create a file called ".bashrc" using some other editor.
925 2) Drag that file onto a shortcut or the actual executable.
926 3) Note that the file name is something like BASHRC~1
927 4) Go to File->Save As menu item and type ".bashrc" as the file name.
928 5) Press "Yes" to indicate that I want to overwrite the file.
929 6) Note that the message "File exists (add ! to override)" is displayed
930 and the file is not saved.
931 Use FindFirstFile() to expand a file name and directory in the path to its
932 long name.
9338 Also implement 'conskey' option for the Win32 console version? Look at
934 how Xvi does console I/O under Windows NT.
9357 Re-install the use of $TERM and support the use of different terminals,
936 besides the console.
9378 Use of <altgr> modifier doesn't work? 5.3 was OK. (Garcia-Suarez/Guckes)
9389 Mapping <C-S-Tab> doesn't work correctly. How to see the difference with
939 <C-S-i>?
9409 tmpnam() uses file in root of file system: "\asdf". That doesn't work on

9428 In os_win32.h, HAVE_STRICMP and HAVE_STRNICMP are defined only if __GNUC__

9529 In mch_expandpath() a "*" is to be expanded, but "\*" isn't. Remove
953 backslashes in result.
9548 Executing a shell, only one option for 'shell' is separated. Should do

Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00009699 Problems in Carbon version for OS X: (Benji Fisher)
970 - keyboard shortcuts in the menus get lost.
9718 The Vim/About menu doesn't work.

986"Small" problems:
9878 When an ":edit" is inside a try command and the ATTENTION prompt is used,
988 the :catch commands are always executed, also when the file is edited
989 normally. Should reset did_emsg and undo side effects. Also make sure
Bram Moolenaar2df6dcc2004-07-12 15:53:54 +0000990 the ATTENTION message shows up. Servatius Brandt works on this.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00009919 When using ":e ++enc=foo file" and the file is already loaded with
992 'fileencoding' set to "bar", then do_ecmd() uses that buffer, even though
993 the fileencoding differs. Reload the buffer in this situation? Need to
994 check for the buffer to be unmodified.
9958 ":g//" gives "Pattern not found error" with E486. Should not use the
996 error number, it's not a regular error message.
9977 Vimtutor leaves escape sequence in terminal. This is the xterm response to
998 requesting the version number. (Yasuhiro Matsumoto)
9998 When redirecting and using ":silent" the current column for displaying and
1000 redirection can be different. Use a separate variable to hold the column
1001 for redirection.
10027 There is no way to change directory and go back without changing the local
1003 and/or global directory. Add a way to find out if the current window uses
1004 a local directory. Add cdcmd() that returns ":cd" or ":lcd"?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000010057 The messages for "vim --help" and "vim --version" don't use
1006 'termencoding'.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000010078 When 'scrollbind' is set, a window won't scroll horizontally if the cursor
1008 line is too short. Add a word in 'scrollopt' to allow moving the cursor
1009 to longer line that is visible. A similar thing is done for the GUI when
1010 using the horizontal scrollbar.
10117 VisVim can only open one file. Hard to solve: each opened file is passed
1012 with a separate invocation, would need to use timestamps to know the
1013 invocations belong together.
10148 When giving a ":bwipeout" command a file-changed dialog may popup for this
1015 buffer, which is pointless. (Mike Williams)
10168 On MS-Windows ":make" doesn't show output while it is working. Use the
1017 tee.exe from http://unxutils.sourceforge.net/ ? About 16 Kbyte in the
1018 UnxUtils.zip archive.
1019 Alternate one: http://www.pramodx.20m.com/tee_for_win32.htm, but Walter
1020 Briscoe says it's not as good.
10218 'fillchars' doesn't work for multi-byte characters.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000010228 Command line completion: buffers "foo.txt" and "../b/foo.txt", completing
1023 ":buf foo<Tab>" doesn't find the second one. (George V. Reilly)
10247 Output for ":scriptnames" and ":breaklist" should shorten the file names:
1025 use "~/" when possible.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000010267 mb_off2cells() doesn't work correctly on the tail byte of a double-byte
1027 character. (Yasuhiro Matsumoto) It should return 1 when used on a tail
1028 byte, like for utf-8. Store second byte of double-byte in ScreenLines2[]
1029 (like for DBCS_JPNU) and put a zero in the second byte (like for UTF-8).
10308 'backupdir' and 'directory' should use $TMPDIR, $TMP and/or $TEMP when
1031 defined.
10327 Inside a function with "perl <<EOF" a line with "$i++" is recognized as an
1033 ":insert" command, causing the following "endfunction" not to be found.
1034 Add skipping this perl construction inside function definitions.
10357 When 'ttimeoutlen' is 10 and 'timeoutlen' is 1000, there is a keycode
1036 "<Esc>a" and a mapping <Esc>x", when typing "<Esc>a" with half a second
1037 delay should not be interpreted as a keycode. (Hans Ginzel)
10387 ":botright 1 new" twice causes all window heights to be changed. Make the
1039 bottom window only bigger as much as needed.
10407 "[p" doesn't work in Visual mode. (David Brown)
10417 The Cygwin and MingW makefiles define "PC", but it's not used anywhere.
1042 Remove? (Dan Sharp)
10439 The argument <f-args> of a user command doesn't handle backslashes
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00001044 properly. "Cmd \ e" is one argument, "Cmd \\ e" still is one argument.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001045 "Cmd \ e" is two arguments, first one ending in space. (Kontra Gergely)
10469 User commands use the context of the script they were defined in. This
1047 causes a "s:var" argument to unexpectedly use a variable in the defining
1048 script, not the calling script. Add an argument to ":command":
1049 "-keepcontext". Do replace <SID>, so that a function in the defining
1050 script can be called.
10518 The Japanese message translations for MS-Windows are called ja.sjis.po,
1052 but they use encoding cp932. Rename the file and check that it still
1053 works.
10549 When a syntax region does not use "keepend" and a contained item does use
1055 "extend", this makes the outer region stop at the end of the contained
1056 region. (Lutz Eymers) Another example Nov 14 2002.
10578 A very long message in confirm() can't be quit. Make this possible with
1058 CTRL-C.
10597 clip_x11_own_selection() uses CurrentTime, that is not allowed. VNC X
1060 server has a problem with this. (Mark Waggoner) Remembering the timestamp
1061 of events isn't always possible. We don't get them in an xterm. GTK
1062 doesn't obtain the selection again when the timestamp differs, thus it
1063 won't work for GTK anyway.
10648 When the clipboard isn't supported: ":yank*" gives a confusing error
1065 message. Specifically mention that the register name is invalid.
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +000010668 "gf" always excludes trailing punctuation characters. file_name_in_line()
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001067 is currently fixed to use ".,:;!". Add an option to make this
1068 configurable?
10698 'hkmap' should probably be global-local.
10709 When "$" is in 'cpoptions' and folding is active, a "C" command changes
1071 the folds and resets w_lines_valid. The display updating doesn't work
1072 then. (Pritesh Mistry)
10738 ":s!from!to!" works, but ":smagic!from!to!" doesn't. It sees the "!" as a
1074 flag to to the command. Same for ":snomagic". (Johan Spetz)
10758 Using ":s" in a function changes the previous replacement string. Save
1076 "old_sub" in save_search_patterns()?
10778 When appending to a file and 'patchmode' isn't empty, a backup file is
1078 always written, even when the original file already exists.
10797 When using "daw" on the last word in a file and this is a single letter,
1080 nothing is deleted. Should delete the letter and preceding white space.
10819 When getting focus while writing a large file, could warn for this file
1082 being changed outside of Vim. Avoid checking this while the file is being
1083 written.
10849 The "Error detected while processing modelines" message should have an
1085 error number.
10867 The message in bt_dontwrite_msg() could be clearer.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000010878 The script ID that is stored with an option and displayed with ":verbose
1088 set" isn't reset when the option is set internally. For example when
1089 'foldlevel' is set from 'foldlevelstart'.
10908 In the fileformat dialog, "Cancel" isn't translated. Add a global
1091 variable for this. (Eduardo Fernandez)
10929 When editing a file with 'readonly' set, there is no check for an existing
1093 swap file. Then using ":write" (without making any changes) doesn't give
1094 a warning either. Should check for an existing swap file without creating
1095 one.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000010967 When 'showbreak' is set, the amount of space a Tab occupies changes.
1097 Should work like 'showbreak' is inserted without changing the Tabs.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000010987 When 'mousefocus' is set and switching to another window with a typed
1099 command, the mouse pointer may be moved to a part of the window that's
1100 covered by another window and we lose focus. Only move in the y
1101 direction, not horizontally?
11028 When using CTRL-D after ":help", restrict the number of matches to a
1103 thousand, otherwise using CTRL-D without an argument takes too long.
11048 ":hardcopy":
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001105 - Using the cterm_color[] table is wrong when t_colors is > 16.
1106 - Need to handle unprintable characters.
1107 - Win32: On a B&W printer syntax highlighting isn't visible. Perform
1108 dithering to make grey text?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001109 - Add a flag in 'printoptions' to add an empty page to make the total
1110 number even. "addempty"? (Mike Williams)
Bram Moolenaarc0197e22004-09-13 20:26:32 +00001111 - Respect 'linebreak'. Perhaps also 'showbreak'?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001112 - Should interpreted CTRL-L as a page break.
1113 - Grey line numbers are not always readable. Add field in 'printoptions'.
1114 Default to black when no syntax highlighting.
1115 - Be able to print a window in diff mode.
1116 - Be able to specify a colorscheme to use for printing. And a separate
1117 one for B&W printing (if that can be detected).
11188 In Visual block mode with 'lbr' set, a change command doesn't insert the
1119 text in following lines where the linebreak changes.
11209 dosinst.c: The DJGPP version can't uninstall the Uninstall registry key on
1121 Windows NT. How to install a .inf file on Windows NT and how to detect
1122 that Windows NT is being used?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000011238 When 'virtualedit' is "block,insert" and encoding is "utf-8", selecting a
1124 block of one double-wide character, then "d" deletes only half of it.
11258 When 'virtualedit' is set, should "I" in blockwise visual mode also insert
1126 in lines that don't extend into the block?
11278 With 'virtualedit' set, in Insert mode just after the end of line, CTRL-O
1128 yh does not yank the last character of the line. (Pavel Papushev)
1129 Doing "hl" first appears to make it work.
11308 With 'virtualedit' set it's possible to move into the blank area from
1131 'linebreak'.
11328 With 'virtualedit' set and 'selection' "exclusive", a Visual selection
1133 that ends in or after a tab, "d" doesn't delete (part of) the tab.
1134 (Helmut Stiegler)
11358 With 'virtualedit' set, a blockwise Visual selection that starts and ends
1136 in a tab, "<" shifts too much. (Helmut Stiegler)
11379 When jumping to a tag, the search pattern is put in the history. When
1138 'magic' is on, the pattern may not work. Translate the pattern depending
1139 on p_magic when putting it in the history? Alternative: Store value of
1140 'magic' in history. (Margo)
11419 optwin.vim: Restoring a mapping for <Space> or <CR> is not correct for
1142 ":noremap". Add "mapcmd({string}, {mode})? Use code from ":mkexrc".
11439 incsearch is incorrect for "/that/<Return>/this/;//" (last search pattern
1144 isn't updated).
11459 term_console is used before it is set (msdos, Amiga).
11469 Get out-of-memory for ":g/^/,$s//@/" on 1000 lines, this is not handled
1147 correctly. Get many error messages while redrawing the screen, which
1148 cause another redraw, etc.
11498 [<C-I> doesn't work when '*' is in 'iskeyword'. find_pattern_in_path()
1150 must escape special characters in the pattern.
11518 Vim can overwrite a read-only file with ":w!". ":w" can't overwrite an
1152 existing file, "w!" can, but perhaps not a read-only file? Then use
1153 ":w!!" for that.
1154 Or ask for permission to overwrite it (if file can be made writable) and
1155 restore file to readonly afterwards.
Bram Moolenaar04a09c12005-08-01 22:02:32 +00001156 Overwriting a file for which a swap file exists is similar issue.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000011577 When compiled with "xterm_clipboard", startup can be slower and might get
1158 error message for invalid $DISPLAY. Try connecting to the X server in the
1159 background (forked), so that Vim starts up quicker? Connect as soon as
1160 the clipboard is to be used (Visual select mode starts, paste from
1161 clipboard)
11627 X11: Some people prefer to use CLIPBOARD instead of PRIMARY for the normal
1163 selection. Add an "xclipboard" argument to the 'clipboard' option? (Mark
1164 Waggoner)
11658 For xterm need to open a connection to the X server to get the window
1166 title, which can be slow. Can also get the title with "<Esc>[21t", no
1167 need to use X11 calls. This returns "<Esc>]l{title}<Esc>\".
Bram Moolenaar35a9aaa2004-10-24 19:23:07 +000011686 When the xterm reports the number of colors, a redraw occurs. This is
1169 annoying on a slow connection. Wait for the xterm to report the number of
1170 colors before drawing the screen. With a timeout.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000011718 When the builtin xterm termcap contains codes that are not wanted, need a
1172 way to avoid using the builtin termcap.
11738 Xterm sends ^[[H for <Home> and ^[[F for <End> in some mode. Also
1174 recognize these keys? Mostly useful for xterm simulators, like gnometerm.
1175 See http://dickey.his.com/xterm/xterm.faq.html#xterm_pc_style.
11768 '[ and '] should be set to start/end of line when using a linewise operator
1177 (e.g., ":w").
11788 CTRL-A can't handle big "long" numbers, they become negative. Check for
1179 "-" character, if not present, use unsigned long.
11808 Make it possible to disable the special meaning of "#" in the first column
1181 for ">>".
11828 Add suspending with CTRL-Z at the "more" prompt, and when executing a long
1183 script in do_cmdline().
11848 When using 'hidden', many swap files will be open. When Vim runs into the
1185 maximum number of open files, error messages will appear. Detect that
1186 this problem is present, and close any hidden files that don't have
1187 changes.
11888 With 'viminfo' set such that the ".viminfo" file is written on a FAT
1189 filesystem, an illegal file name may be created: ".vim".
11908 For each buffer that is opened, the viminfo file is opened and read to
1191 check for file marks. This can be slow.
11927 In xterm, recognize both vt100 and vt220 cursor keys. Change
1193 add_termcode() to not remove an existing entry for a name, when it's
1194 needed.
1195 Need a generic solution to recognize different codes for the same key.
11968 Core dump within signal function: gdb doesn't show stack backtrace! Option
1197 to skip catch_signals()?
11989 Repeating a "cw" with "." doesn't work if the text was pasted from the
1199 clipboard. (Thomas Jones) It's because the menu/toolbar item exits Insert
1200 mode and uses "gP". How to fix this without breaking inserting a block of
1201 text?
12028 In Replace mode pasting from the clipboard (using menu or toolbar) inserts
1203 all the text. Add ":rmenu"?
12048 Pasting with the mouse in Replace mode inserts the text, instead of
1205 overwriting, when it is more than one line. Same for using <C-R>.
12069 CTRL-E and CTRL-Y don't work in small window when 'so' is 4 and lines are
1207 wrapping (Acevedo/in.226). E.g., when using CTRL-E, window height 7,
1208 window might actually scroll down when last line of buffer is displayed.
1209 --> Remember if the previous command was "cursor follows screen" or
1210 "screen follow cursor" and use this in cursupdate().
12117 tilde_replace() can only handle "~/", should also do "~user/".
1212 Get the list of home directories (from /etc/passwd? Use getpwent()) and
1213 use some clever algorithm to match a path with that. Find common strings
1214 in the list?
12158 When dragging status line with mouse, sometimes a jump when first clicking
1216 on the status line (caused by 'winheight'). Select window on button up,
1217 instead of on button down.
12188 Dragging the status line doesn't scroll but redraw.
12199 Evaluating 'statusline' in build_stl_str_hl() does not properly check for
1220 reaching the end of the available buffer.
12218 When performing incremental search, should abort searching as soon as a
1222 character is typed.
12238 When the value of $MAKE contains a path, configure can't handle this.
1224 It's an autoconf bug. Remove the path from $MAKE to work around it.
12258 How to set VIMRC_FILE to \"something\" for configure? Why does this not
1226 work: CFLAGS='-DVIMRC_FILE=\"/mydir/myfile\"' ./configure
12278 The temporary file is sometimes not writable. Check for this, and use an
1228 alternate name when it isn't. Or add the 'temptemplate' option: template
1229 for the temp file name ":set temptemplate=/usr/tmp/?????.tmp".
1230 Also: Win32 version uses Windows temp directory, which might not work for
1231 cygwin bash.
12327 Get error "*, \+ or \( operand could be empty" for pattern "\(.\)\1\{3}".
1233 Remember flags for backreferences.
12347 When switching to Daylight Saving Time, Vim complains that a file has been
1235 changed since last read. Can we use a function that uses GMT?
12367 When completing an environment variable after a '$', check for file names
1237 that contain a '$' after all have been found.
12388 When "cm" termcap entry is missing, starting gvim shouldn't complain about
1239 it. (Lohner) Try out with "vt100" entry, cm replaced with cX.
12407 When an include file starts with "../", the check for already visiting
1241 this file doesn't work. Need to simplify the file name.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000012427 The names and comments for the arguments of do_browse() are confusing.
1243 "dflt" isn't the default file name when "initdir" is not NULL and
1244 "initdir" is the default path to be used.
12457 When 'scrolloff' is exactly half the window height, "j" causes a scroll of
1246 two lines at a time. "k" doesn't do this. (Cory T. Echols)
12478 When write_viminfo() is used while there are many orphaned viminfo
1248 tempfiles writing the viminfo file fails. Give a clear error message so
1249 that the user knows he has to delete the files.
12507 It's possible to redefine a script-local function with ":func
1251 <SNR>123_Test()". (Krishna) Disallow this.

1253
1254I can't reproduce these (if you can, let me know how!):
12559 NT 4.0 on NTFS file system: Editing ".bashrc" (drag and drop), file
1256 disappears. Editing ".xyz" is OK. Also, drag&drop only works for three
1257 files. (McCollister)

1260Problems that will (probably) not be solved:
Bram Moolenaar35a9aaa2004-10-24 19:23:07 +00001261- xterm title: The following scenario may occur (esp. when running the Vim
1262 test script): Vim 1 sets the title to "file1", then restores the title to
Bram Moolenaarbee0c5b2005-02-07 22:03:36 +00001263 "xterm" with an ESC sequence when exiting. Vim 2 obtains the old title
Bram Moolenaar35a9aaa2004-10-24 19:23:07 +00001264 with an X library call, this may result in "file1", because the window
1265 manager hasn't processed the "xterm" title yet. Can apparently only be
1266 worked around with a delay.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001267- In a terminal with 'mouse' set such that the mouse is active when entering
1268 a command line, after executing a shell command that scrolls up the
1269 display and then pressing ":": Selecting text with the mouse works like
1270 the display wasn't scrolled. Vim doesn't know how much the external
1271 command scrolled up the display. Use Shift to select text.
1272- X windows: When $DISPLAY points to a X server where there is no access
1273 permission, trying to connect to the X server causes an error message.
1274 XtOpenDisplay() prints this directly, there is no way to avoid it.
1275- X windows: Setting 'guifontset' to an illegal value sometimes crashes Vim.
1276 This is caused by a fault in a X library function, can't be solved in Vim.
1277- Motif: When adding a menu item "Find this &Symbol", the "s" in "this" will
1278 be underlined, instead of in "Symbol". Motif doesn't let us specify which
1279 character gets the highlighting.
1280- Moving the cursor removes color in color-xterm. This is a color-xterm
1281 problem! color-xterm ver. 6.1 beta 3 and later work properly.
1282- In zsh, "gvim&" changes the terminal settings. This is a zsh problem.
1283 (Jennings)
1284- Problem with HPterm under X: old contents of window is lost (Cosentino).
1285- Amiga: When using quickfix with the Manx compiler we only get the first 25
1286 errors. How do we get the rest?
1287- Amiga: The ":cq" command does not always abort the Manx compiler. Why?
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00001288- Linux: A file with protection r--rw-rw- is seen readonly for others. The
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001289 access() function in GNU libc is probably wrong.
1290- MSDOS: When using smartdrive with write-back buffering, writing to a
1291 readonly floppy will cause problems. How to test for a writable floppy
1292 first?
1293- MSDOS: Both 16 and 32 bit versions: File name expansion doesn't work for
1294 names that start with a dot. These used to be illegal file names.
1295- When doing a CTRL-Z and typing a command for the shell, while Vim is busy
1296 (e.g. writing a file), the command for the shell is sometimes eaten by Vim,
1297 because the terminal mode is changed from RAW to CBREAK.
1298- An old version of GNU tgoto can't handle the terminfo code for "AF". The
1299 "%p1" is interpreted as "%p" and "1", causing color not to be working.
1300 Fix: Change the "%p1" in the "AF" and "AB" terminfo entries to "%p".
1301 (Benzinger).
1302- When running an external command from the GUI, typeahead is going to that
1303 program, not to Vim. It looks like the shell eats the characters, Vim
1304 can't get back what the external command didn't use.
1305- Win32 GUI: Error code from external command not returned in shell_error.
1306 It appears that cmd.exe and command.com don't return an error code.
1307- Win32 GUI: The Toolbar is a bit too high when the flat style is being
1308 used. We don't have control over the height of the Toolbar.
1309- Win32: All files created on the day of switching from winter to summer
1310 time cause "changed since editing started" messages. It goes away when
1311 the file is written again the next day, or the timezone is adjusted.
1312 DJGPP version is OK. (Zaimi) Looks like a problem with the Win32 library.
1313 Rebooting doesn't help. Time stamps look OK in directory. (Penn)
1314 Is this on FAT (stores wall clock time) or NTFS (stores UTS)?
1315- Win32, MS-Windows XP: $HOME uses the wrong drive when the user profiles
1316 are not on the boot disk. This is caused by a wrong value of $HOMEDRIVE.
1317 This is a bug in XP, see MSKB article 818134.
1318- SunOS 5.5.1 with Motif: The file open dialog does not have a horizontal
1319 scroll bar for the "files" selection. This is a problem in the Motif
1320 libraries, get a patch from Sun.
1321- Solaris 2.6 with GTK and Perl: gvim crashes when started. Problem with X
1322 input method called from GDK code. Without Perl it doesn't crash.
1323- VMS: Vimdiff doesn't work with the VMS diff, because the output looks
1324 different. This makes test 47 fail. Install a Unix-compatible diff.
1325- VMS v7.1 and older: Tests 21 and 32 fail. From VMS v7.1-2 and newer Vim
1326 does not have this behavior. (Zoltan Arpadffy)
1327- Win32 GUI: mouse wheel always scrolls rightmost window. The events arrive
1328 in Vim as if the rightmost scrollbar was used.
1329- GTK with Gnome: Produces an error message when starting up:
1330 Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library
1331 This is caused by the gnome library gnome_init() setting $LC_CTYPE to
1332 "en_US". Not all systems support this locale name, thus causing the
1333 error. Hopefully a newer version of GTK/Gnome fixes this problem.
1334- GTK 2: With this mapping the hit-enter prompt is _sometimes_ below the
1335 screen, at other times there is a grey area below the command line:
1336 :nmap <F11> :if &guioptions=~'m' \| set guioptions-=m \| else \| set guioptions+=m \| endif<cr>
1337- GTK: When pasting a selection from Vim to xclipboard gvim crashes with a
1338 ABRT signal. Probably an error in the file gdkselection.c, the assert
1339 always fails when XmbTextListToTextProperty() fails. (Tom Allard)
Bram Moolenaarf4b8e572004-06-24 15:53:16 +00001340- GTK 2: gives an assertion error for every non-builtin icon in the toolbar.
1341 This is a GTK 2.4.x bug, fixed in GTK 2.4.2. (Thomas de Grenier de Latour)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001342- When using an xterm that supports the termresponse feature, and the 't_Co'
1343 termcap option was wrong when Vim started, it will be corrected when the
1344 termresponse is received. Since the number of colors changes, the
1345 highlighting needs to be initialized again. This may cause colors defined
1346 in the vimrc file to be lost.
1347- On Windows NT 4.0 the number of files passed to Vim with drag&drop and
1348 "Edit with Vim" is limited. The maximum command line length is 255 chars.
1349
1350--------------------- extensions and improvements ----------------------
1351 *extensions-improvements*
1352
1353Documentation:
Bram Moolenaar293ee4d2004-12-09 21:34:53 +000013548 The GUI help should explain the Find and Find/Replace dialogs. Add a link
1355 to it from ":promptrepl" and ":promptfind".
Bram Moolenaard4755bb2004-09-02 19:12:26 +000013568 List of options should mention whether environment variables are expanded
1357 or not.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000013588 Extend usr_27.txt a bit. (Adam Seyfarth)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000013597 Add a section on debugging scripts in the user manual.
13609 Make the Reference Manual more precise. For each command mention:
1361 - change to cursor position and curswant
1362 - if it can be undone (u/CTRL-R) and redone (.)
1363 - how it works for folded lines
1364 - how it works with multi-byte characters
13659 In change.txt, remark about Javadoc isn't right. Right alignment would
1366 work too.
13678 Spread the windows commands over the other files. For example, ":stag"
1368 should be with ":tag". Cross-link with tags to avoid too much double
1369 text.
13708 Add tags for all features, e.g. "gui_running".
13717 MS-Windows: When a wrong command is typed with an ALT key, give a hint to
1372 look at the help for 'winaltkeys'.
13737 Add a help.vim plugin that maps <Tab> to jump to the next tag in || and
1374 <C-Tab> (and <S-Tab>) to the previous tag.
1375- Check text editor compendium for vi and Vim remarks.
1376
1377
1378Help:
1379- First try using the ":help" argument literally, before using it as a
1380 pattern. And then match it as part of a tag.
1381- When a help item has multiple matches make it possible to use ":tn" to go
1382 to the other matches.
1383- Support a way to view (and edit) .info files.
1384- Default mapping for help files: <Tab> to position cursor on next |:tag|.
1385- Implement a "sticky" help window, some help text lines that are always
1386 displayed in a window with fixed height. (Guckes) Use "~/.vimhelp" file,
1387 user can edit it to insert his favorite commands, new account can contain a
1388 default contents.
1389- Make 'winminheight' a local option, so that the user can set a minimal
1390 height for the help window (and other windows).
1391- ":help :s^I" should expand to ":help :substitute".
1392- Make the help key (<F1>) context sensitive?
1393- Learn mode: show short help while typing commands.
1394
1395
1396User Friendlier:
Bram Moolenaarce0842a2005-07-18 21:58:11 +000013978 Windows install with NSIS: make it possible to do a silent install, see
1398 http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Docs/Chapter4.html#4.12
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000013998 Windows install with install.exe: Use .exe instead of .bat files for
1400 links, so that command line arguments are passed on unmodified? (Walter
1401 Briscoe)
14028 Windows install: Be able to associate Vim with a selection of file types?
14038 Windows uninstall: Have uninstal.c delete the vimfiles directories that
1404 dosinst.c creates. List the contents of the directory (recursively) if
1405 the user asks for it. Requires an implementation of "rm -rf".
14068 Remember the name of the vimrc file that was used (~/.vimrc, $VIM/_vimrc,
1407 $HOME/_vimrc, etc.) and add "edit vimrc" to the File menu.
1408- Add a way to save local settings and mappings into a new plugin file.
1409 ":mkplugin <file>"?
14108 Add ":plugininstall" command. Can be used to install a plugin file that
1411 includes documentation. Let the user select a directory from
1412 'runtimepath'.
1413 " Vim plugin
1414 <main plugin code>
1415 " >>> plugin help start <<<
1416 <plugin docs>
1417- Add mappings local to a window: ":map <window> ..."?
14189 Add buffer-local menu. Should offer a choice between removing the menu or
1419 disabling it. Be careful that tear-offs don't disappear (keep one empty
1420 item?).
1421 Alternative: use BufEnter and BufLeave autocommands.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000014228 make a vimtutor script for Amiga and other systems.
14237 Add the arguments for configure to the ":version" output?
Bram Moolenaar51ac12f2005-07-02 23:21:11 +000014247 When Vim detects a file is being edited elsewhere and it's a gvim session
1425 of the same user it should offer a "Raise" button, so that the other gvim
1426 window can be displayed. (Eduard)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001427
1428
Bram Moolenaar7d1f5db2005-07-03 21:39:27 +00001429Spell checking:
14309 Work together with OpenOffice.org to update the wordlists. (Adri Verhoef,
1431 Aad Nales) Setup vim-spell maillist?
Bram Moolenaarda2303d2005-08-30 21:55:26 +00001432- Compound word is accepted if nr of words is <= COMPOUNDMAX OR nr of
1433 syllables <= COMPOUNDSYLMAX. Specify using AND in the affix file?
1434- COMPOUNDMAX -> COMPOUNDWORDMAX?
1435- Support flags on a suffix. Used for second level affixes. The flags may
1436 also be used for compounding. Default is an OR mechanism with the flags
1437 of the word. Adding "compset" on the affixes means the compound flags of
1438 the word are not used. Instead of "SFX a 0 add/FLAGS ." we could use "SFX
1439 a 0 add . /FLAGS" (or support both).
1440- NEEDCOMPOUND also used for affix? Or use "needcomp" after affix?
1441- Do we need a flag for the rule that when compounding is done the following
1442 word doesn't have a capital after a word character, even for Onecap words?
1443- New hunspell home page: http://hunspell.sourceforge.net/
Bram Moolenaar69e0ff92005-09-30 21:23:56 +00001444 - Version 1.1.0 is out now, look into that.
Bram Moolenaarda2303d2005-08-30 21:55:26 +00001445 - Lots of code depends on LANG, that isn't right. Enable each mechanism
1446 in the affix file separately.
1447 - Example with compounding dash is bad, gets in the way of setting
1448 COMPOUNDMIN and COMPOUNDMAX to a reasonable value.
1449 - PSEUDOROOT == NEEDAFFIX
1450 - COMPOUNDROOT -> COMPOUNDED? For a word that already is a compound word
1451 Or use COMPOUNDED2, COMPOUNDED3, etc.
1452- CIRCUMFIX: when a word uses a prefix marked with the CIRCUMFIX flag, then
1453 the word must also have a suffix marked with the CIRCUMFIX flag. It's a
1454 bit primitive, since only one flag is used, which doesn't allow matching
1455 specific prefixes with suffixes.
1456 Alternative:
1457 PSFX {flag} {pchop} {padd} {pcond} {schop} {sadd}[/flags] {scond}
1458 We might not need this at all, you can use the NEEDAFFIX flag and the
1459 affix which is required.
1460- When a suffix has more than one syllable, it may count as a word for
1461 COMPOUNDMAX.
1462- Add flags to count extra syllables in a word. SYLLABLEADD1 SYLLABLEADD2,
1463 etc.? Or make it possible to specify the syllable count of a word
1464 directly, e.g., after another slash: /abc/3
1465- MORPHO item in affix file: ignore morphological fields after word and
1466 affix.
1467- Implement multiple flags for compound words and CMP item?
1468 Await comments from other spell checking authors.
1469- Also see tklspell: http://tkltrans.sourceforge.net/
Bram Moolenaar7d1f5db2005-07-03 21:39:27 +000014708 Charles Campbell asks for method to add "contained" groups to existing
1471 syntax items (to add @Spell).
1472 Add ":syntax contains {pattern} add=@Spell" command? A bit like ":syn
1473 cluster" but change the contains list directly for matching syntax items.
14748 Install spell files with src/main.aap.
1475- References: MySpell library (in OpenOffice.org).
1476 http://spellchecker.mozdev.org/source.html
1477 http://whiteboard.openoffice.org/source/browse/whiteboard/lingucomponent/source/spellcheck/myspell/
1478 author: Kevin Hendricks <kevin.hendricks@sympatico.ca>
14798 Make "en-rare" spell file? Ask Charles Campbell.
14808 The English dictionaries for different regions are not consistent in their
1481 use of words with a dash.
Bram Moolenaar7d1f5db2005-07-03 21:39:27 +000014827 Insert mode completion mechanism that uses the spell word lists.
14838 Add hl groups to 'spelllang'?
1484 :set spelllang=en_us,en-rare/SpellRare,en-math/SpellMath
1485 More complicated: Regions with different languages? E.g., comments
1486 in English, strings in German (po file).
Bram Moolenaar7d1f5db2005-07-03 21:39:27 +00001487
1488
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001489Diff mode:
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000014908 Use diff mode to show the changes made in a buffer (compared to the file).
1491 Use an unnamed buffer, like doing:
1492 new | set bt=nofile | r # | 0d_ | diffthis | wincmd p | diffthis
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +00001493 Also show difference with the file when editing started? Should show what
1494 can be undone. (Tom Popovich)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000014957 Add cursor-binding: when moving the cursor in one diff'ed buffer, also
1496 move it in other diff'ed buffers, so that CTRL-W commands go to the same
1497 location.
1498
1499
1500Folding:
Bram Moolenaarbba577a2005-11-28 23:05:55 +00001501 (commands still available: zI zJ zK zp zP zq zQ zV zy zY;
1502 secondary: zB zS zT zZ, z=)
Bram Moolenaarb5bf5b82004-12-24 14:35:23 +000015038 Add "z/" and "z?" for searching in not folded text only.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000015048 Add different highlighting for a fold line depending on the fold level.
1505 (Noel Henson)
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +000015067 Use "++--", "+++--" for different levels instead of "+---" "+----".
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000015078 When a closed fold is displayed open because of 'foldminlines', the
1508 behavior of commands is still like the fold is closed. How to make the
1509 user aware of this?
15108 Add an option 'foldskip' with values like 'foldopen' that specifies which
1511 commands skip over a closed fold.
15128 "H" and "L" count buffer lines instead of window lines. (Servatius Brandt)
15138 Add a way to add fold-plugins. Johannes Zellner has one for VB.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000015147 When using manual folding, the undo command should also restore folds.
Bram Moolenaar293ee4d2004-12-09 21:34:53 +00001515- Allow completely hiding a closed fold. E.g., by setting 'foldtext' to an
1516 empty string. Require showing a character in 'foldcolumn' to avoid the
1517 missing line goes unnoticed.
1518 How to implement this?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001519- When pressing the down arrow of a scrollbar, a closed fold doesn't scroll
1520 until after a long time. How to make scrolling with closed folds
1521 smoother?
1522- When creating a session, also store folds for buffers in the buffer list,
1523 using the wininfo in wi_folds.
1524- 'foldmethod' "textobject": fold on sections and paragraph text objects.
1525- Add 'hidecomment' option: don't display comments in /* */ and after //.
Bram Moolenaar293ee4d2004-12-09 21:34:53 +00001526 Or is the conceal patch from Vince Negri a more generic solution?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001527- "zu": undo change in manual fold. "zU" redo change in manual fold. How to
1528 implement this?
1529- "zJ" command: add the line or fold below the fold in the fold under the
1530 cursor.
1531- 'foldmethod' "syntax": "fold=3": set fold level for a region.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001532- Apply a new foldlevel to a range of lines. (Steve Litt)
Bram Moolenaar293ee4d2004-12-09 21:34:53 +000015338 Have some way to restrict commands to not folded text. Also commands like
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001534 searches.
1535
1536
1537Multi-byte characters:
15389 When the tail byte of a double-byte character is illegal (e.g., a CR), the
1539 display is messed up (Yasuhiro Matsumoto). Should check for illegal
1540 double-byte characters and display them differently (display each single
1541 byte).
15428 Add an item in 'fileencodings' to check the first lines of a file for
1543 the encoding. See Python PEP: http://www.python.org/peps/pep-0263.html.
1544 To avoid getting a wrong encoding only accept something Emacs-like:
1545 "-*- coding: enc-na_me.foo -*-" and "-*- coding= enc-na_me.foo -*-"
1546 Match with "-\*-\s*coding[:=]\s*\([::word::-_.]\+\)\s*-\*-" and use first
1547 item.
15488 Add an item in 'fileencodings' to check the first line of an XML file for
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00001549 the encoding. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> Or "charset=UTF-8"?
1550 For HTML look for "charset=utf-8".
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000015518 The quickfix file is read without conversion, thus in 'encoding'. Add an
1552 option to specify the encoding of the errorfile and convert it. Also for
Bram Moolenaar293ee4d2004-12-09 21:34:53 +00001553 ":grep" and ":helpgrep".
Bram Moolenaar46c9c732004-12-12 11:37:09 +00001554 More generic solution: support a filter (e.g., by calling a function).
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000015558 When a file was converted from 'fileencoding' to 'encoding', a tag search
1556 should also do this on the search pattern. (Andrzej M. Ostruszka)
15577 When converting a file fails, mention which byte could not be converted,
1558 so that the user can fix the problem.
15598 Add configure option to be able to disable using the iconv library. (Udo
1560 Schweigert)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000015619 'aleph' should be set to 1488 for Unicode. (Zvi Har'El)
15628 Should add test for using various commands with multi-byte characters.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000015638 'infercase' doesn't work with multi-byte characters.
15648 toupper() function doesn't handle byte count changes.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000015658 "ga" should show all composing characters, also if there are more than 2.
15667 When searching, should order of composing characters be ignored?
15678 Should implement 'delcombine' for command line editing.
15688 Detect overlong UTF-8 sequences and handle them like illegal bytes.
15698 ":s/x/\u\1/" doesn't work, making uppercase isn't done for multi-byte
1570 characters.
15718 UTF-8: "r" in Visual mode doesn't take composing characters.
15728 UTF-8: When there is a precomposed character in the font, use it instead
1573 of a character and a composing character. See xterm for an example.
15747 When a character can't be displayed, display its digraph instead.
1575 'display' option to specify this.
15767 Use ideas for nl_langinfo() from Markus Kuhn in enc_default():
1577 (www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/ucs/langinfo.c)
1578- GTK and Win32: Allow selecting fonts for 'guifontset' with the
1579 fontselector somehow.
1580- GTK and Win32: make it possible to set the font for the menu to make it
1581 possible to have 'encoding' different from the current locale.
1582- dbcs_class() only works for Japanese and Korean. Implement this for
1583 other encodings. The "euc-jp" and "euc-kr" choices might be wrong.
1584- Find some way to automatically select the right GUI font or fontset,
1585 depending on the default value of 'encoding'.
1586 Irrelevant in the GTK+ 2 GUI so long as UTF-8 is used.
1587 For Windows, the charset_pairs[] table could be used. But how do we know
1588 if a font exists?
1589- Do keyboard conversion from 'termencoding' to 'encoding' with
Bram Moolenaar6cc16192005-01-08 21:49:45 +00001590 convert_input() for Mac GUI and RiscOS GUI.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001591- Add mnemonics from RFC1345 longer than two characters.
1592 Support CTRL-K _{mnemonic}_
15937 In "-- INSERT (lang) --" show the name of the keymap used instead of
1594 "lang". (Ilya Dogolazky)
1595- Make 'langmap' accept multi-byte characters.
Bram Moolenaarac6e65f2005-08-29 22:25:38 +00001596- Make 'breakat' accept multi-byte characters. Problem: can't use a lookup
1597 table anymore (breakat_flags[]).
1598 Simplistic solution: when 'formatoptions' contains "m" also break a line
1599 at a multi-byte character >= 0x100.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001600- Do we need the reverse of 'keymap', like 'langmap' but with files and
1601 multi-byte characters? E.g., when using a Russian keyboard.
1602- Add the possibility to enter mappings which are used whenever normal text
1603 could be entered. E.g., for "f" command. But not in Normal mode. Sort
1604 of opposite of 'langmap'. Use ":tmap" command?
1605- When breaking a line, take properties of multi-byte characters into
1606 account. The "linebreak" program from Bruno Haible can do it:
1607 ftp://ftp.ilog.fr/pub/Users/haible/gnu/linebreak-0.1.tar.gz
1608 But it's very complicated...
1609
1610
1611Printing:
Bram Moolenaarc0761132005-03-18 20:30:32 +000016127 Implement "undercurl" for printing.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001613- Add "page width" to wrap long lines.
1614- Win32: use a font dialog for setting 'printfont'. Can reuse the code for
1615 the 'guifont' dialog, put the common code in a separate function.
Bram Moolenaar567e4de2004-12-31 21:01:02 +00001616- Add the file timestamp to the page header (with an option). (George
1617 Reilly)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001618- Win32: when 'printfont' is empty use 'guifont'.
1619- Unix: Use some dialog box to do the obvious settings (paper size, printer
1620 name, portrait/landscape, etc).
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001621- PostScript: only works for 7-bit ASCII and EBCDIC. Should support
1622 different 'encoding' values somehow.
1623- Allow specifying the paper size, instead of using a standard size. Same
1624 units as for the margins.
1625- Support right-to-left text?
16268 Make the foreground color darkening function preserve the hue of the
1627 color.
1628
1629
1630Syntax highlighting:
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000016318 Make ":syn off" use 'runtimepath' instead of $VIMRUNTIME. (Gary Johnson)
1632 Should do the same for ":syn on" and ":syn manual".
16338 Support "containedin" argument for ":syn include", so that the defined
1634 cluster can be added to existing syntax items.
16358 C syntax: Don't highlight {} as errors inside () when used like this:
1636 "({ something })", often used in GCC code.
16378 When editing a new file without a name and giving it a name (by writing
1638 it) and 'filetype' is not set, detect the filetype. Avoid doing it for
1639 ":wq file".
16408 Make conversion to HTML faster (Write it in C or pre-compile the script).
16419 There is still a redraw bug somewhere. Probably because a cached state is
1642 used in a wrong way. I can't reproduce it...
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000016437 Be able to change only the background highlighting. Useful for Diff* and
1644 Search highlighting.
16458 Allow the user to add items to the Syntax menu sorted, without having to
1646 change this for each release.
16478 Add a "matchcontains" for regions: items contained in the start or end
1648 pattern, but not in the body.
16498 Add a "keepend-contained" argument: Don't change the end of an item this
1650 one is contained in. Like "keepend" but specified on the contained item,
1651 instead of the containing item.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000016528 cpp.vim: In C++ it's allowed to use {} inside ().
16538 Some syntax files set 'iskeyword'. When switching to another filetype
1654 this isn't reset. Add a special keyword definition for the syntax rules?
1655 When this is done, use vim.vim syntax highlighting for help file examples,
1656 but without ":" in 'iskeyword' for syntax.
16578 Add specific syntax item to match with parens/braces that don't have a
1658 "%" match. :syntax nomatch cMatchError (,{,[,),},] [contained]
16598 Highlight the text between two matching parens (e.g., with a grey
1660 background) when on one of the parens or in between them.
1661 Or highlight the matching paren when the cursor is on one.
16628 Add a command to jump to the next character highlighted with "Error".
16638 When using a cterm, and no ctermfg or ctermbg are defined, use start/stop
1664 sequences. Add remark in docs that :if 'term' == "term-name" should be
1665 used.
16668 Add @spell cluster to String and Comment groups for many languages. Will
1667 allow spell checking. (Fleiner)
16688 When listing syntax items, try to sort the keywords alphabetically. And
1669 re-insert the [] if possible.
16708 Make it possible to use color of text for Visual highlight group (like for
1671 the Cursor).
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +000016728 It would be useful to make the highlight group name an expression. Then
1673 when there is a match, the expression would be evaluated to find out what
1674 highlight group to use. Could be used to check if the shell used in a
1675 password file appears in /etc/shells. (Nikolai Weibull)
1676 syn match =s:checkShell(v:match) contained 'pattern'
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000016778 Make it possible to only highlight a sub-expression of a match. Like
1678 using "\1" in a ":s" command.
16798 Support for deleting syntax items:
1680 :syn keyword cTodo remove this
1681 :syn match cTodo remove "pattern"
1682 :syn region cString remove start="this" end="that"
16838 Add possibility to sync on something else, when the syncing in one way
1684 doesn't find match. For HTML: When no {script} is found, try looking for
1685 a '<'. (Fleiner)
16867 Replace the synchronizing method with a state machine specification?
1687 Should be able to start at any line in the file, search forwards or
1688 backwards, and use the result of matching a pattern.
16897 Use parsing like awk, so that e.g., a ( without a matching ) can be
1690 detected.
16918 Make it possible to use "inverted" highlighting, invert the original
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00001692 character. For Visual mode. (xterm-selection already does this).
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000016938 Highlight non-printable characters with "SpecialChar", linked to
1694 "Special". Display them with the digraph characters, if possible.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000016958 Highlight the clipboard-selection with a highlight group.
16968 Be able to reset highlighting to its original (default) values.
16977 Be able to write current highlighting to a file as commands, similar to
1698 ":mkvimrc".
16998 Improve c.vim:
1700 - Add check for unterminated strings, with a variable to switch it on:
1701 "c_strict_ansi".
1702 - Detect unbalanced "#endif". Requires looking back a long way...
17038 Add an option to restrict the updating of syntax highlighting to the
1704 current line while in Insert mode.
17058 When guessing value of 'background', the syntax file has already been
1706 loaded (from the .gvimrc). After changing 'background', load it again?
17078 Add ":syn resync" command, to re-parse the whole file until the current
1708 display position.
17098 Should support "me" offset for a region start pattern. To be used to
1710 allow searching for the end pattern inside the match of the end pattern.
1711 Example: syn region pikeXX start="([^{]" end=")" should work on "()".
17128 When using a regexp for "contains=", should delay matching with it until
1713 redrawing happens. Set a flag when a group is added, check this flag when
1714 highlighting starts.
17157 Add "semitrans": Add highlighting. E.g., make the text bold, but keep the
1716 colors. And add colors, so that Green+Red becomes Yellow.
1717 E.g. for this html:
1718 <B> bold text <I> italic+bold text </B> italic text </I>
17197 Wild idea: Not only set highlighting, but also change what is displayed
1720 (e.g., remove characters, so that "<B>bold</B>" can be shown as "bold"):
1721 :syn region boldstuff start="<B>" display="" end="</B>" display=""
17227 CTRL-] checks the highlight group for finding out what the tag is.
17237 Add an explanation how a list of words can be used to highlight misspelled
1724 words.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000017257 Command line completion for ":find" should search in 'path'.
17268 Add more command line completion for :syntax.
17278 Add more command line completion for :highlight.
17288 Add more command line completion for :sign.
17297 Should find a better way to parse the :syntax and :highlight commands.
1730 Use tables or lists that can be shared by parsing for execution and
1731 completion?
17328 Add ColorSchemePost autocommand event, so that scripts can set up their
1733 highlighting. (Salman Halim)
17347 Add a few sets of colors (e.g. Borland Turbo C one). With a menu to
1735 select one of the sets.
17368 Add offsets to sub-matches: "\(a*\) *"he=e1-1
1737 'e' is end of match 'e1' is end of sub-match 1, 's2' is start of submatch
1738 2, etc.
17398 In Insert mode, when there are typeahead characters, postpone the
1740 highlighting (for "." command).
17418 Syncing on comments isn't 100% correct when / / lines mix with / * and * /.
1742 For example: What about a line that starts with / / and contains * /?
17438 Ignore / * and * / inside strings, when syncing.
17447 Build a few more syntax files from the file "/usr/share/misc/vgrindefs":
1745 ISP, LDL, Icon, ratfor. And check "nedit/source/highlight.c".
17466 Add possibility to have background color continue until the right edge of
1747 the window. Useful for comment blocks and function headings. (Rogall)
1748- Make it possible to add "contains" items for all items in a group. Useful
1749 when extending an already existing syntax file.
1750- Add line-continuation pattern for non-syncing items too?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001751- Add possibility to highlight the whole line, including the right margin
1752 (for comment blocks).
1753- Add 'hlmatch' option: List of flags:
1754 'c': highlight match for character under the cursor.
1755 'b': highlight the previous (, and its match.
1756 'a': highlight all text from the previous ( until its match.
1757 Also for {}, <>, etc.?
1758 'e': highlight all braces without a match (slow?)
1759 OR: add an argument "cursor" to the syntax command, which means that the
1760 region/match/keyword is only highlighted when the cursor is on it.
1761 (Campbell)
1762 Or do it like Elvis: define text objects and how to highlight them around
1763 the cursor. (Iain Truskett)
17647 Make it possible to use all words in the tags files as Keyword.
1765 Can also be done with a script (but it's slow).
17667 Make it possible to call a ":" command when a match is found. Should
1767 allow for adding keywords from the text (e.g. variables that are set).
1768 And allows for sections with different highlighting.
17697 Add highlight group for commandline: "Commandline". Make sure it
1770 highlights the command line while typing a command, and any output from
1771 messages. And external commands?
17728 Make a version that works like less, but with highlighting: read stdin for
1773 text, exit at end of file, don't allow editing, etc. moreim? lessim?
17747 SpecialKey highlighting overrules syntax highlighting. Can't give an
1775 unprintable char another color. Would be useful for ^M at end of line.
1776
1777
1778Built-in script language:
17798 Add referring to key options with "&t_xx". Both for "echo &t_xx" and
1780 ":let &t_xx =". Useful for making portable mappings.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000017818 exists("&&option") tests if 'option' is actually implemented. Useful for
1782 'shellslash', for example.
Bram Moolenaar1c2fda22005-01-02 11:43:19 +00001783- Add "{range}source": execute lines from a buffer.
1784 Alternative: Allow range for ":exec", pass it on to the executed command.
1785 (Webb)
1786 You can already yank lines and use :@" to execute them.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000017878 Have a look at VSEL. Would it be useful to include? (Bigham)
17888 Add ":fungroup" command, to group function definitions together. When
1789 encountered, all functions in the group are removed. Suggest using an
1790 obscure name to avoid name clashes. Require a ":fungroup END" in the same
1791 sourced file? Assume the group ends at the end of the file. Handle
1792 nested packages?
1793 Alternative: Support packages. {package-name}:{function-name}().
1794 Packages are loaded automatically when first used, from
1795 $VIMRUNTIME/packages (or use a search path).
Bram Moolenaarc0197e22004-09-13 20:26:32 +000017967 Add the markclear() function to delete a mark in another buffer. Charles
1797 Campbell (2004 Jan 9)
1798 http://mysite.verizon.net/astronaut/vim/index.html#Patch
1799 Implement setmark(markname, lnum [, col [, filename]]) instead?
1800 When "lnum" is zero delete the mark.
1801 When "filename" has no wildcards and there is no matching buffer, add
1802 the buffer (unlisted).
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000018037 Pre-parse or compile Vim scripts into a bytecode.
1804 1. Put the bytecode with the original script, with an ":if
1805 has('bytecode')" around it, so that it's only used with a Vim that
1806 supports it. Update the code with a command, can be used in an
1807 autocommand.
1808 2. Use a ".vic" file (like Python use .pyc). Create it when writing a
1809 .vim file. Problem: distribution.
1810 3. Use a cache directory for each user. How to recognize which cached
1811 file belongs to a sourced script?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000018127 Add argument to winwidth() to subtract the space taken by 'foldcolumn',
1813 signs and/or 'number'.
18148 Add functions:
Bram Moolenaar5eb86f92004-07-26 12:53:41 +00001815 realname() Get user name (first, last, full)
1816 user_fullname() patch by Nikolai Weibull, Nov
1817 3 2002
1818 Only add this when also implemented for
1819 non-Unix systems, otherwise a shell cmd could
1820 be used.
1821 get_user_name() gets login name.
Bram Moolenaarab79bcb2004-07-18 21:34:53 +00001822 menuprop({name}, {idx}, {what})
1823 Get menu property of menu {name} item {idx}.
1824 menuprop("", 1, "name") returns "File".
1825 menuprop("File", 1, "n") returns "nmenu
1826 File.Open..." argument.
1827 Patch by Ilya Sher, 2004 Apr 22
1828 Return a list of menus and/or a dictionary
1829 with properties instead.
1830 mapname({idx}, mode) return the name of the idx'th mapping.
1831 Patch by Ilya Sher, 2004 Mar 4.
1832 Return a list instead.
Bram Moolenaar05159a02005-02-26 23:04:13 +00001833 char2hex() convert char string to hex string.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001834 attributes() return file protection flags "drwxrwxrwx"
Bram Moolenaar05159a02005-02-26 23:04:13 +00001835 filecopy(from, to) Copy a file
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001836 shorten(fname) shorten a file name, like home_replace()
Bram Moolenaar05159a02005-02-26 23:04:13 +00001837 perl(cmd) call Perl and return string
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001838 inputrl() like input() but right-to-left
1839 virtualmode() add argument to obtain whether "$" was used in
1840 Visual block mode.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001841 getacp() Win32: get codepage (Glenn Maynard)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001842 deletebufline() delete line in any buffer
1843 appendbufline() append line in any buffer
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001844 libcall() Allow more than one argument.
1845 libcallext() Like libcall(), but using a callback function
1846 to allow the library to execute a command or
1847 evaluate an expression.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000018487 Make bufname("'0") return the buffer name from mark '0. How to get the
1849 column and line number? col("'0") currently returns zero.
18508 argc() returns 0 when using "vim -t tag". How to detect that no file was
1851 specified in any way? To be able to jump to the last edited file.
18528 Pass the executable name to the Vim scripts in some way. As v:argv0?
18538 Add command arguments with three dashes, passed on to Vim scripts.
18548 When starting to source a vim script, delete all functions that it has
1855 previously defined? Avoids using ":fun!" all the time.
18567 Add optional arguments to user functions:
1857 :func myFunc(arg1, arg2, arg3 = "blah", arg4 = 17)
18586 User functions: Functions local to buffer "b:func()"?
18598 Add ":let var[{expr}] = {expr}". When past the end of "var" just ignore.
18608 The "= register should be writable, if followed by the name of a variable,
1861 option or environment variable.
18628 ":let &option" should list the value of the option.
18637 Add synIDlist(), making the whole list of syntax items on the
1864 stack available (separated with '\n').
18658 Add autocommand-event for when a variable is changed:
1866 :au VarChanged {varname} {commands}
18678 Add "has("gui_capable")", to check if the GUI can be started.
18688 Add possibility to use variables like registers: characterwise (default),
1869 linewise (when ending in '\n'), blockwise (when ending in '\001'). reg0,
1870 rega, reg%, etc. Add functions linewise({expr}), blockwise({expr}) and
1871 charwise({expr}).
18727 Make it possible to do any command on a string variable (make a buffer
1873 with one line, containing the string). Maybe add an (invisible) scratch
1874 buffer for this?
1875 result = scratch(string, command)
1876 result = apply(string, command)
1877 result = execute(string, command)
1878 "command" would use <> notation.
1879 Does scratch buffer have a number? Or re-use same number?
18807 Add function to generate unique number (date in milliseconds).
18817 Automatically load a function from a file when it is called. Need an
1882 option for the search path. (Sekera)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001883
1884
1885Robustness:
Bram Moolenaar843ee412004-06-30 16:16:41 +000018866 Add file locking. Lock a file when starting to edit it with flock() or
1887 fcntl(). This patch has advisory file locking while reading/writing
1888 the file for Vim 5.4: ~/vim/patches/kahn_file_locking .
1889 The patch is incomplete (needs support for more systems, autoconf).
1890 Andy doesn't have time to work on it.
1891 Disadvantage: Need to find ways to gracefully handle failure to obtain a
1892 lock. When to release a lock: When buffer is unloaded?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00001893
1894
1895Performance:
Bram Moolenaarbee0c5b2005-02-07 22:03:36 +000018967 For strings up to 3 bytes don't allocate memory, use v_list itself as a
1897 character array. Use VAR_SSTRING (short string).
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000018988 Loading plugins takes startup time. Only load the part that is used to
1899 trigger the rest, and load the rest when it's needed?
19008 Turn b_syn_ic and b_syn_containedin into b_syn_flags.
19019 Loading menu.vim still takes quite a bit of time. How to make it faster?
19028 in_id_list() takes much time for syntax highlighting. Cache the result?
19037 setpcmark() shifts the jumplist, this takes quite a bit of time when
1904 jumping around. Instead use an index for the start?
19058 When displaying a space with only foreground highlighting, it's the same
1906 as a space without attributes. Avoid displaying spaces for the "~" lines
1907 when starting up in a color terminal.
19088 Avoid alloc() for scratch buffer use, esp. in syntax.c. It's very slow on
1909 Win16.
19109 Setting GUI options in the console (e.g., 'guifont') should not cause a
1911 redraw.
19128 Profiling shows that in_id_list() is used very often for C code. Can this
1913 function be improved?
19148 For an existing file, the page size of the swap file is always the
1915 default, instead of using the block size of the device, because the swap
1916 file is created only after setting the block size in mf_open(). How can
1917 this be improved?
19188 Set default for 'ttyscroll' to half a screen height? Should speed up
1919 MS-DOS version. (Negri)
Bram Moolenaar293ee4d2004-12-09 21:34:53 +000019207 C syntax highlighting gets a lot slower after ":set foldmethod=syntax".
1921 (Charles Campbell) Inserting a "{" is very slow. (dman)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000019227 HTML syntax highlighting is slow for long lines. Try displaying
1923 http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/22908.html. (Andre Pang)
19247 Check how performance of loading the wordlist can be improved (adding a
1925 lot of abbreviations).
19267 DOS console: Add t_DL support, to make scrolling faster.
19277 Compile Ex commands to byte codes. Store byte codes in a vim script file
1928 at the end, after "compiled:. Make it look like a single comment line
1929 for old Vim versions. Insert first line "Vim script compiled <timestamp>.
1930 Only used compiled code when timestamp matches the file stat.
1931 Add command to compile a vim script and add it to the file in-place.
1932 Split Ex command executing into a parsing and executing phase.
1933 Use compiled code for functions, while loops, etc.
19348 When editing a file with extremely long lines (e.g., an executable), the
1935 "linerest" in readfile() is allocated twice to be able to copy what was
1936 read so far. Use realloc() instead? Or split the line when allocating
1937 memory fails and "linerest" is big (> 100000)?
19388 When defining autocommands (e.g., from $VIMRUNTIME/filetype.vim), need to
1939 compare each pattern with all existing patterns. Use a hash code to avoid
1940 using strcmp() too often?
19417 Include turbo_loader patches, speeding up reading a file?
1942 Speed up reading a file by reading it into a fixed-size buffer, creating
1943 the list of indexes in another buffer, and then copying the result into a
1944 memfile block with two copies. Then read the next block into another
1945 fixed-size buffer, create the second list of indexes and copy text from
1946 the two blocks to the memfile block.
19477 do_cmdline(): Avoid that the command line is copied to allocated memory
1948 and freed again later all the time. For while loops, and for when called
1949 with an argument that can be messed with.
1950 Generic solution: Make a struct that contains a pointer and a flag that
1951 indicates if the pointer should be freed when replaced.
19527 Check that the file size is not more than "sizeof(long)".
1953- Further improve finding mappings in maphash[] in vgetorpeek()
19548 Syntax highlighting is slow when deleting lines. Try in
1955 $VIMRUNTIME/filetype.vim.
1956- "out of memory" after deleting (1,$d) and changing (:%s/^/> /) a lot of
1957 lines (27000) a few times. Memory fragmentation?
1958- Have a look at how pdksh does memory allocation (alloc.c). (Dalecki)
1959- Do profiling on:
1960 - :g/pat/normal cmd
1961 - 1000ii<Esc>
1962 - deleting 10Mbyte worth of lines (netscape binary)
1963 - "[i" and "[d" (Yegappan Lakshmanan)
1964 - ":g/^/m0" on a 450Kbyte file. And the "u".
1965 - highlighting "~/vim/test/longline.tex", "~/vim/test/scwoop.tcl" and
1966 "~/vim/test/lockup.pl".
1967 - loading a syntax file to highlight all words not from a dictionary.
1968 - editing a vim script with syntax highlighting on (loading vim.vim).
19697 Screen updating can be further improved by only redrawing lines that were
1970 changed (and lines after them, when syntax highlighting was used, and it
1971 changed).
1972 - On each change, remember start and end of the change.
1973 - When inserting/deleting lines, remember begin, end, and line count.
1974- Use macros/duarte/capicua for profiling. Nvi 1.71 is the fastest!
1975- When using a file with one long line (1Mbyte), then do "$hhhh", is still
1976 very slow. Avoid calling getvcol() for each "h"?
1977- Executing a register, e.g. "10000@@" is slow, because ins_typebuf has to
1978 move the previous commands forward each time. Pass count from
1979 normal_cmd() down to do_execreg().
1980- Repeating insert "1000i-<Esc>" displays --INSERT-- all the time, because of
1981 the <Esc> at the end. Make this work faster (disable redrawing).
1982- Avoid calls to plines() for cursor line, use w_cline_height.
1983- After ":set nowrap" remove superfluous redraw with wrong hor. offset if
1984 cursor is right of the screen.
19858 Make CTRL-C on Unix generate a signal, avoid using select() to check for a
1986 CTRL-C (it's slow).
1987
1988
1989Code size:
19908 GUI: When NO_CONSOLE is defined, more code can be excluded.
1991- Put getline() and cookie in a struct, so only one argument has to be
1992 passed to do_cmdline() and other functions.
19938 Make a GUI-only version for Unix?
19948 In buf_write _() isn't needed when setting errmsg, do it once when using
1995 it.
19967 When compiling with a GUI-only version, the code for cterm colors can be
1997 left out.
19988 When compiled with a GUI-only version, the termcap entries for terminals
1999 can be removed.
20008 Can the check for libelf in configure.in be removed?
2001
2002
2003Messages:
20048 When using ":q" in a changed file, the error says to "add !". Add the
2005 command so that beginners understand it: "use :q!".
20068 For 'verbose' level 12 prints commands from source'ed files. How to skip
2007 lines that aren't executed? Perhaps move the echoing to do_cmdline()?
20088 Use 'report' for ":bdel"? (Krishna) To avoid these messages when using a
2009 script.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002010- Delete message after new command has been entered and have waited for key.
2011 Perhaps after ten seconds?
2012- Make message history available in "msg" variables: msg1, msg2, .. msg9.
20139 Check handling of overwriting of messages and delays:
2014 Very wrong: errors while redrawing cause endless loop.
2015 When switching to another file and screen scrolls because of the long
2016 message and return must be typed, don't scroll the screen back before
2017 redrawing.
20187 Add an option, which is a regexp, that disables warning messages which
2019 match that regexp (Tsirkin).
20208 When address range is wrong you only get "Invalid range". Be a bit more
2021 specific: Negative, beyond last line, reverse range? Include the text.
20228 Make it possible to ignore errors for a moment ('errorignore'?). Another
2023 option to switch off giving error messages ('errorquiet'?). Also an option
2024 not to give any messages ('quiet')? Or ":quiet on", ":quiet off".
2025 Careful: For a severe error (out of memory), and when the user starts
2026 typing, error messages must be switched back on.
2027 Also a flag to ignore error messages for shell commands (for mappings).
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00002028- Option to set time for emsg() sleep. Interrupt sleep when key is typed?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002029 sleep before second message?
20308 In Ex silent mode or when reading commands from a file, what exactly is
2031 not printed and what is? Check ":print", ":set all", ":args", ":vers",
2032 etc. At least there should be no prompt. (Smulders) And don't clear the
2033 screen when reading commands from stdin. (Kendall)
2034 --> Make a difference between informative messages, prompts, etc. and
2035 error messages, printing text, etc.
20368 Window should be redrawn when resizing at the hit-enter prompt.
2037 Also at the ":tselect" prompt. Find a generic solution for redrawing when
2038 a prompt is present (with a callback function?).
2039
2040
2041Screen updating:
20427 Add a string to the 'display' option to make CTRL-E and CTRL-Y scroll one
2043 screen line, also if this means the first line doesn't start with the
2044 first character (like what happens with a single line that doesn't fit).
2045- screen_line():
2046 - insert/delete character stuff.
2047 - improve delete rest of line (spaces at end of line).
2048- When moving or resizing window, try to avoid a complete redraw (esp. when
2049 dragging the status line with the mouse).
2050- When 'lazyredraw' set, don't echo :ex commands? Need a flag to redraw when
2051 waiting for a character.
20528 Add a ":refresh [winnr]" command, to force updating a window. Useful from
2053 an event handler where ":normal" can't be used. Also useful when
2054 'lazyredraw' is set in a mapping.
20557 Make 'list' and 'linebreak' work together.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002056
2057
2058Scrolling:
20598 Add "zm" command: scroll horizontally to put the cursor in the middle.
20606 Add option to set the overlap for CTRL-F and CTRL-B. (Garhi)
2061- extend 'scrollbind' option: 'scrollopt' words "search", "relative", etc..
2062 Also 'e'xecute some commands (search, vertical movements) in all bound
2063 windows.
20647 Add 'scrollbind' feature to make the offset of one window with the next
2065 one equal to the window height. When editing one file in both windows it
2066 looks like each window displays a page of the buffer.
2067- Allow scrolling by dragging with the mouse (grab a character and move it
2068 up/down). Like the "hand" in Acrobat reader. Use Alt-LeftMouse for this?
2069 (Goldfarb)
2070- Add command to execute some commands (search, vertical movements) in all
2071 bound windows.
2072- Add 'search' option to 'scrollopt' to allow 'scrollbind' windows to
2073 be bound by regexp searches
Bram Moolenaar69a7cb42004-06-20 12:51:53 +00002074- Add "z>" and "z<": scroll sideways one screenful. (Campbell)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002075- Add option to set the number of lines when not to scroll, instead of the
2076 fixed number used now (for terminals that scroll slow with a large number
2077 of lines but not with a single line).
2078
2079
2080Autoconf:
20818 Should use acconfig.h to define prototypes that are used by autoheader.
20828 Some compilers don't give an error for "-OPT:Olimit" but a warning. (Webb)
2083 Add a check for the warning, so that "Olimit" can be added automatically?
2084- Autoconf: Use @datadir@ for the system independent files. Make sure the
2085 system dependent and system independent files are separated. (Leitner).
2086- Add autoconf check for waitpid()/wait4().
2087- Remove fcntl() from autoconf, all systems have it?
2088- Set default for 'dictionary', add search for dictionary to autoconf.
2089
2090
2091Perl interface:
20928 Rename typemap file to something else?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000020937 Make buffers accessed as Perl arrays. (Clark)
20947 Make it possible to compile with non-ANSI C?
20956 Tcl/Tk has the "load" command: load a shared library (.so or .dll).
2096
2097
2098Shared libraries:
20996 Add support for loading shared libraries, and calling functions in it.
2100 :libload internal-name libname
2101 :libunload internal-name
2102 :liblist
2103 :libcall internal-name function(arg1, arg2, ...)
2104 :libcall function(arg1, arg2, ...)
2105 libcall() can have only one integer or String argument at the moment.
21066 Have a look on how Perl handles loading dynamic libraries.
2107
2108
2109Tags:
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000021108 Add a function that returns the line in the tags file for a matching tag.
2111 Can be used to extract more info (class name, inheritance, etc.) (Rico
2112 Hendriks)
21137 Count before CTRL-]: jump to N'th match
21148 Scope arguments for ":tag", e.g.: ":tag class:cPage open", like Elvis.
21158 When output of ":tselect" is long, getting the more-prompt, should be able
2116 to type the tag number directly.
21177 Add a tag-select window. Works like ":cwindow". (Michal Malecki)
21187 Add the possibility to use the "-t {tag}" argument multiple times. Open a
2119 window for each tag.
21207 Make output of ":tselect" a bit nicer. Use highlighting?
21217 Highlight the "tag 1 of >2" message. New highlight group, or same as "hit
2122 bottom" search message.
21237 When using ":tag" at the top of the tag stack, should add another entry,
2124 so CTRL-T can bring you back to where you are now AND to where you were
2125 before the previous ":tag" command. (Webb)
Bram Moolenaar485db9b2005-01-31 19:23:41 +00002126- When doing "[^I" or "[^D" add position to tag stack.
2127- Add command to put current position to tag stack: ":tpush".
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000021287 When using CTRL-] on someClass::someMethod, separate class from method and
2129 use ":ta class:someClass someMethod".
2130 Include C++ tags changes (Bertin). Change "class::func" tag into "func"
2131 with "class=class"? Docs in oldmail/bertin/in.xxx.
21327 Add ":tagargs", to set values for fields:
2133 :tagargs class:someclass file:version.c
2134 :tagargs clear
2135 These are then the default values (changes the order of priority in tag
2136 matching).
21377 Support for "gtags" and "global"? With ":rtag" command?
2138 There is an example for how to do this in Nvi.
2139 Or do it like Elvis: 'tagprg' and 'tagprgonce' options. (Yamaguchi)
2140 The Elvis method is far more flexible, do it that way.
21417 Support "col:99" extra field, to position the cursor in that column. With
2142 a flag in 'cpoptions' to switch it off again.
21437 Better support for jumping to where a function or variable is used. Use
2144 the id-utils, with a connection to "gid" (Emacs can do it too). Add
2145 ":idselect", which uses an "ID" database (made by "mkid") like "tselect".
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002146
2147
2148Security:
2149- nothing at the moment
2150
2151
2152Win32 GUI:
21538 Make debug mode work while starting up (vim -D). Open console window for
2154 the message and input?
21557 The Python interface only works with one version of Python, selected at
2156 compile time. Can this be made to work with version 2.1 and 2.2
2157 dynamically?
21587 GvimExt: when there are several existing Vims, move the list to a submenu.
2159 (Mike McCollister)
21608 When using "Edit with Vim" for one file it changes directory, when several
2161 files are selected and using "Edit with single Vim" the directory isn't
2162 changed. At least change directory when the path is the same for all
2163 files. Perhaps just use the path of the first file or use the longest
2164 common part of the path.
21658 Add font argument to set the lfCharSet. (Bobcik)
21668 Somehow automatically detect the system language and set $LANG, so that
2167 gettext and menus work.
21688 Could keep console open to run multiple commands, to avoid the need to hit
2169 return in every console.
2170 Also: Look at how Emacs does runs external commands:
2171 http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/voelker/ntemacs.html.
21728 Need a separate PopUp menu for modeless selection. Need two new commands:
2173 Copy selection to clipboard, Paste selection (as typed text).
21748 Support copy/paste for other file formats. At least HTML, perhaps RTF.
2175 Add "copy special" and "paste special" commands?
21767 Use different default colors, to match the current Windows color scheme.
2177 Sys_WindowText, Sys_Window, etc. (Lionel Schaffhauser)
21787 Use <C-Tab> to cycle through open windows (e.g., the find dialog).
21797 <Esc> should close a dialog.
21807 Keep the console for external commands open. Don't wait for a key to be
2181 hit. Re-open it when the user has closed it anyway. Or use a prepended
2182 command: ":nowait {cmd}", or ":quiet", which executes {cmd} without any
2183 prompts.
21847 Should be able to set an option so that when you double click a file that
2185 is associated with Vim, you can either get a new instance of Vim, or have
2186 the file added into an already running Vim.
21877 The "-P" argument only works for the current codepage. Use wide
2188 functions to find the window title.
2189
2190
2191GUI:
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000021928 Make inputdialog() work for Photon, Amiga, RiscOS.
2193- <C--> cannot be mapped. Should be possible to recognize this as a
2194 normal "-" with the Ctrl modifier.
21957 Implement ":popup" for other systems than Windows.
21968 Implement ":tearoff" for other systems than Win32 GUI.
21976 Implement ":untearoff": hide a torn-off menu.
21988 When using the scrollbar to scroll, don't move the cursor position. When
2199 moving the cursor: scroll to the cursor position.
22009 Make <S-Insert> paste from the clipboard by default. (Kunze)
22017 Menu local to a buffer, like mappings. Or local to a filetype?
22028 In Buffers menu, add a choice whether selecting a buffer opens it in the
2203 current window, splits the window or uses ":hide".
22048 Dragging the mouse pointer outside of a Vim Window should make the text
2205 scroll. Return a value from gui_send_mouse_event() to the machine
2206 specific code to indicate the time in which the event should be repeated.
22078 Make it possible to ignore a mouse click when it's used to give Vim (gvim)
2208 window focus. Also when a mouse click is used to bring a window to front.
22098 Make the split into system independent code and system specific code more
2210 explicit. There are too many #ifdefs in gui.c.
2211 If possible, separate the Vim code completely from the GUI code, to allow
2212 running them in separate processes.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000022137 X11: Support cursorColor resource and "-cr" argument.
22148 X11 (and others): CTRL-; is not different from ';'. Set the modifier mask
2215 to include CTRL for keys where CTRL produces the same ASCII code.
Bram Moolenaaraba2f482005-08-10 07:57:38 +000022167 Add some code to handle proportional fonts on more systems? Need to draw
2217 each character separately (like xterm). Also for when a double-width font
2218 is not exactly double-width. (Maeda)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000022198 Should take font from xterm where gvim was started (if no other default).
22208 Selecting font names in X11 is difficult, make a script or something to
Bram Moolenaar0a56cb82005-01-04 21:45:14 +00002221 select one.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000022228 Visual highlighting should keep the same font (bold, italic, etc.).
22238 Add flag to 'guioptions' to not put anything in the clipboard at all?
22248 Should support a way to use keys that we don't recognize yet. Add a
2225 command that adds entries to special_keys somehow. How do we make this
2226 portable (X11, Win32, ..)?
22277 Add a flag to 'guioptions' that tells not to remove inactive menu items.
2228 For systems where greying-out or removing menu items is very slow. The
2229 menu items would remain visibly normally, but not do anything.
22307 Add ":minimize" and ":maximize", which iconize the window and back.
2231 Useful when using gvim to run a script (e.g. 2html.vim).
22327 X11: Is it possible to free allocated colors, so that other programs can
2233 use them again? Otherwise, allow disabling allocating the default colors.
2234 Or allocate an own colormap (check UAE). With an option to use it. For
2235 the commandline, "-install" is mostly used for X11 programs.
22367 Add command line argument for "gvim" not to start the GUI. Sort of the
2237 inverse of "vim -g". (Vikas)
22387 Should support multi-column menus.
2239- Should add option for where to put the "Help" menu: like Motif at the far
2240 right, or with the other menus (but still at the right).
2241- Add menu item to "Keep Insert mode".
22428 ":mkgvimrc" command, that includes menus.
22436 Big change: Move GUI to separate program "vimgui", to make startup of vim a
2244 lot faster, but still be able to do "vim -g" or ":gui".
22457 More explicit mouse button binding instead of 'mousemodel'?
22467 Add option to set the position of the window on the screen. 'windowpos',
2247 which has a value of "123,456": <x>,<y>.
2248 Or add a command, like ":winsize"?
22497 Add toolbar for more GUIs.
22508 Make it possible to use "amenu icon=BuiltIn##", so that the toolbar item
2251 name can be chosen free.
22527 Make it possible to put the toolbar on top, left, right and/or bottom of
2253 the window? Allows for softkey-like use.
22546 Separate the part of Vim that does the editing from the part that runs the
2255 GUI. Communicate through a pseudo-tty. Vim starts up, creates a
2256 pty that is connected to the terminal. When the GUI starts, the pty is
2257 reconnected to the GUI process. When the GUI stops, it is connected to
2258 the terminal again. Also use the pty for external processes, it looks
2259 like a vt100 terminal to them. Vim uses extra commands to communicate GUI
2260 things.
22617 Motif: For a confirm() dialog <Enter> should be ignored when no default
2262 button selected, <Esc> should close the dialog.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000022637 When using a pseudo-tty Vim should behave like some terminal (vt52 looks
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00002264 simple enough). Terminal codes to/from shell should be translated.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002265- Would it be useful to be able to quit the GUI and go back to the terminal
2266 where it was started from?
22677 Support "-visual <type>" command line argument.
2268
2269
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002270Autocommands:
Bram Moolenaarb5bf5b82004-12-24 14:35:23 +000022717 For autocommand events that trigger multiple times per buffer (e.g.,
2272 CursorHold), go through the list once and cache the result for a specific
2273 buffer. Invalidate the cache when adding/deleting autocommands or
2274 changing the buffer name.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000022758 Add ScriptReadCmd event: used to load remote Vim scripts, e.g.
2276 "vim -u http://mach/path/vimrc".
Bram Moolenaar34cdc3e2005-05-18 22:24:46 +000022777 Add TagJump event: do something after jumping to a tag.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000022788 Use another option than 'updatetime' for the CursorHold event. The two
2279 things are unrelated for the user (but the implementation is more
2280 difficult).
22818 Also trigger CursorHold in Insert mode?
22827 Add autocommand event for when a buffer cannot be abandoned. So that user
2283 can define the action taking (autowrite, dialog, fail) based on the kind
2284 of file. (Yakov Lerner) Or is BufLeave sufficient?
22858 Can't use ":normal" in CursorHold autocommands. Make the CursorHold event
2286 insert a special key code, and call the autocommand functions from a
2287 higher level, so that vgetc() isn't used recursively.
22888 Autocommands should not change registers. And marks? And the jumplist?
2289 And anything else?
22908 Autocommand for when modified files have been found, when getting input
2291 focus again (e.g., FileChangedFocus).
2292 Check when: getting focus, jumping to another buffer, ...
22938 Add autocommands, user functions and user commands to ":mkvimrc".
22948 Add "TagJumpFile" autocommand: When jumping to another file for a tag.
2295 Can be used to open "main.c.gz" when "main.c" isn't found.
22966 Add KeymapChanged event, so that the effects of a different keymap can be
2297 handled (e.g., other font) (Ron Aaron)
22987 Add a way to skip an autocommand if going from one *.c file to another *.c
2299 file.
23007 When trying to open a directory, don't load the file but trigger an
2301 autocommand event OpenDirectory.
23027 Add file type in front of file pattern: <d> for directory, <l> for link,
2303 <x> for executable, etc. <&xxx> for Risc OS. With commas to separate
2304 alternatives. The autocommand is only executed when both the file type
2305 AND the file pattern match. (Leonard)
23065 Add option that specifies extensions which are to be discarded from the
2307 file name. E.g. 'ausuffix', with ".gz,.orig". Such that file.c.gz will
2308 trigger the "*.c" autocommands. (Belabas)
23097 Add something to break the autocommands for the current event, and for
2310 what follows. Useful for a "BufWritePre" that wants to avoid writing the
2311 file.
23128 When editing "tt.gz", which is in DOS format, 'fileformat' stays at
2313 "unix", thus writing the file changes it. Somehow detect that the read
2314 command used dos fileformat. Same for 'fileencoding'.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002315- Add events to autocommands:
2316 Error - When an error happens
2317 NormalEnter - Entering Normal mode
2318 InsertEnter - Entering Insert mode
2319 ReplaceEnter - Entering Replace mode
2320 CmdEnter - Entering Cmdline mode
2321 VisualEnter - Entering Visual mode
Bram Moolenaar843ee412004-06-30 16:16:41 +00002322 *Leave - Leaving a mode (in pair with the above *Enter)
Bram Moolenaar21cf8232004-07-16 20:18:37 +00002323 VimLeaveCheck - Before Vim decides to exit, so that it can be cancelled
2324 when exiting isn't a good idea.
Bram Moolenaar3fdfa4a2004-10-07 21:02:47 +00002325 WinMoved - when windows have been moved around, e.g, ":wincmd J"
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002326 CmdUndefined - Like FuncUndefined but for user commands.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002327 SearchPost - After doing a search command (e.g. to do "M")
2328 PreDirChanged/PostDirChanged
2329 - Before/after ":cd" has been used (for changing the
2330 window title)
2331 BufReadAction - replaces reading a file
2332 BufWriteAction - replaces writing a file
2333 ShutDown - when the system is about to shut down
2334 InsertCharPre - user typed character Insert mode, before inserting the
2335 char. Pattern is matched with text before the cursor.
2336 Set v:char to the character, can be changed.
2337 (not triggered when 'paste' is set).
2338 InsertCharPost - user typed a character in Insert mode, after inserting
2339 the char.
2340 BufModified - When a buffer becomes modified, or unmodified (for
2341 putting a [+] in the window title or checking out the
2342 file from CVS).
2343 BufFirstChange - When making a change, when 'modified' is set. Can be
2344 used to do a :preserve for remote files.
2345 BufChange - after a change was made. Set some variables to indicate
2346 the position and number of inserted/deleted lines, so
2347 that marks can be updated. HierAssist has patch to add
2348 BufChangePre, BufChangePost and RevertBuf. (Shah)
2349 WinResized - When a window has been resized
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002350- Add autocommand to be executed every so many seconds? For writing the
2351 file now and then ('autosave').
2352 *'autosave'* *'as'* *'noautosave'* *'noas'*
2353 'autosave' 'aw' number (default 0)
2354 Automatically write the current buffer to file N seconds after the
2355 last change has been made and when |'modified'| is still set.
2356 Default: 0 = do not autosave the buffer.
2357 Alternative: have 'autosave' use 'updatetime' and 'updatecount' but make
2358 them save the file itself besides the swapfile.
2359
2360
2361Insert mode completion/expansion:
23628 When there is no word before the cursor but something like "sys." complete
2363 with "sys.". Works well for C and similar languages.
23649 ^X^L completion doesn't repeat correctly. It uses the first match with
2365 the last added line, instead of continuing where the last match ended.
2366 (Webb)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000023678 Add option to set different behavior for Insert mode completion:
2368 - ignore/match case
2369 - different characters than 'iskeyword'
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000023708 Add a command to undo the completion, go back to the original text.
Bram Moolenaaraba2f482005-08-10 07:57:38 +000023717 Completion of an abbreviation: Can leave letters out, like what Instant
2372 text does: www.textware.com
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000023738 Use the class information in the tags file to do context-sensitive
2374 completion. After "foo." complete all member functions/variables of
2375 "foo". Need to search backwards for the class definition of foo.
2376 Should work for C++ and Java.
2377 Even more context would be nice: "import java.^N" -> "io", "lang", etc.
23787 When expanding $HOME/dir with ^X^F keep the $HOME (with an option?).
23797 Add CTRL-X command in Insert mode like CTRL-X CTRL-N, that completes WORDS
2380 instead of words.
23818 Add CTRL-X CTRL-R: complete words from register contents.
23828 Add completion of previously inserted texts (like what CTRL-A does).
2383 Requires remembering a number of insertions.
23848 Add 'f' flag to 'complete': Expand file names.
2385 Also apply 'complete' to whole line completion.
2386- Make it possible to search include files in several places. Use the
2387 'path' option? Can this be done with the dictionary completion (use
2388 wildcards in the file name)?
2389- Make CTRL-X CTRL-K do a binary search in the dictionary (if it's sorted).
2390- Speed up CTRL-X CTRL-K dictionary searching (don't use a regexp?).
2391- Set a mark at the position where the match was found (file mark, could
2392 be in another file).
2393- Add CTRL-A command in CTRL-X mode: show all matches.
2394- Make CTRL-X CTRL-L use the 'complete' option?
2395- Add command in CTRL-X mode to add following words to the completed string
2396 (e.g. to complete "Pointer->element" with CTRL-X CTRL-P CTRL-W CTRL-W)
2397- CTRL-X CTRL-F: Use 'path' to find completions.
2398- CTRL-X CTRL-F: Option to use forward slashes on MS-Windows?
2399- CTRL-X CTRL-F: Don't replace "$VIM" with the actual value. (Kelly)
24008 Add option 'isexpand', containing characters when doing expansion (so that
2401 "." and "\" can be included, without changing 'iskeyword'). (Goldfarb)
2402 Also: 'istagword': characters used for CTRL-].
2403 When 'isexpand' or 'istagword' are empty, use 'iskeyword'.
2404- Allow listing all matches in some way (and picking one from the list).
2405
2406
2407Command line editing:
24087 Add commands (keys) to delete from the cursor to the end of the command
2409 line.
24108 Custom completion of user commands can't use the standard completion
2411 functions. Add a hook to invoke a user function that returns the type of
2412 completion to be done: "file", "tag", "custom", etc.
2413- Add flags to 'whichwrap' for command line editing (cursor right at end of
2414 lines wraps to start of line).
2415- Make editing the command line work like Insert mode in a single-line view
2416 on a buffer that contains the command line history. But this has many
2417 disadvantages, only implement it when these can be solved. Elvis has run
2418 into these, see remarks from Steve (~/Mail/oldmail/kirkendall/in.00012).
2419 - Going back in history and editing a line there would change the history.
2420 Would still need to keep a copy of the history elsewhere. Like the
2421 cmdwin does now already.
2422 - Use CTRL-O to execute one Normal mode command. How to switch to normal
2423 mode for more commands? <Esc> should cancel the command line. CTRL-T?
2424 - To allow "/" and "= need to recursively call getcmdline(), overwrite the
2425 cmdline. But then we are editing a command-line again. How to avoid
2426 that the user gets confused by the stack of command lines?
2427 - Use edit() for normal cmdline editing? Would have to integrate
2428 getcmdline() into edit(). Need to solve conflicts between Insert mode
2429 and Command-line mode commands. Make it work like Korn shell and tcsh.
2430 Problems:
2431 - Insert: completion with 'wildchar'
2432 - Insert: use cmdline abbreviations
2433 - Insert: CTRL-D deletes indent instead of listing matches
2434 - Normal: no CTRL-W commands
2435 - Normal: no ":" commands?
2436 - Normal: allow Visual mode only within one line.
2437 - where to show insert/normal mode message? Change highlighting of
2438 character in first column?
2439 - Implementation ideas:
2440 - Set "curwin" and "curbuf" to the command line window and buffer.
2441 - curwin->w_topline is always equal to curwin->w_cursor.lnum.
2442 - never set 'number', no folding, etc. No status line.
2443 - sync undo after entering a command line?
2444 - use NV_NOCL flag for commands that are not allowed in Command-line
2445 Mode.
2446
2447
2448Command line completion:
24498 Change expand_interactively into a flag that is passed as an argument.
24508 With command line completion after '%' and '#', expand current/alternate
2451 file name, so it can be edited. Also with modifiers, such as "%:h".
24528 When completing command names, either sort them on the long name, or list
2453 them with the optional part inside [].
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000024547 Completion of ":map x ": fill in the current mapping, so that it can be
2455 edited. (Sven Guckes)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002456- For 'wildmenu': Simplify "../bar" when possible.
2457- When using <Up> in wildmenu mode for a submenu, should go back to the
2458 current menu, not the first one. E.g., ":emenu File.Save<Up>".
24598 For ":find" and ":sfind" expand files found in 'path'.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000024608 When using backtick expansion, the external command may write a greeting
2461 message. Add an option or commands to remove lines that match a regexp?
24627 When listing matches of files, display the common path separately from the
2463 file names, if this makes the listing shorter. (Webb)
2464- Add command line completion for ":ilist" and friends, show matching
2465 identifiers (Webb).
24668 Add command line completion for "old value" of a command. ":args <key>"
2467 would result in the current list of arguments, which you can then edit.
24687 Add command line completion with CTRL-X, just like Insert mode completion.
2469 Useful for ":s/word/xx/".
2470- Add command to go back to the text as it was before completion started.
2471 Also to be used for <Up> in the command line.
2472- Add 'wildlongest' option: Key to use to find longest common match for
2473 command line completion (default CTRL-L), like 'wildchar'. (Cregut)
2474 Also: when there are several matches, show them line a CTRL-D.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002475
2476
2477Command line history:
Bram Moolenaar60c78922005-03-20 22:40:14 +000024789 Remember which command lines were actually typed and were not loaded from
2479 viminfo. When writing viminfo append only these lines, so that lines from
2480 other Vim's are not overwritten.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002481- Add "KeyWasTyped" flag: It's reset before each command and set when a
2482 character from the keyboard is consumed. Value is used to decide to put a
2483 command line in history or not. Put line in history if it didn't
2484 completely resulted from one mapping.
2485- When using ":browse", also put the resulting edit command in the history,
2486 so that it can be repeated. (Demirel)
2487
2488
2489Insert mode:
Bram Moolenaarf4b8e572004-06-24 15:53:16 +000024909 When 'autoindent' is set, hitting <CR> twice, while there is text after
2491 the cursor, doesn't delete the autoindent in the resulting blank line.
2492 (Rich Wales) This is Vi compatible, but it looks like a bug.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000024938 When using CTRL-O in Insert mode, then executing an insert command
2494 "a" or "i", should we return to Insert mode after <Esc>? (Eggink)
2495 Perhaps it can be allowed a single time, to be able to do
2496 "<C-O>10axyz<Esc>". Nesting this further is confusing.
2497 ":map <F2> 5aabc<Esc>" works only once from Insert mode.
24987 Use CTRL-G <count> to repeat what follows. Useful for inserting a
2499 character multiple times or repeating CTRL-Y.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000025007 Use 'matchpairs' for 'showmatch': When inserting a character check if it
2501 appears in the rhs of 'matchpairs'.
2502- In Insert mode (and command line editing?): Allow undo of the last typed
2503 character. This is useful for CTRL-U, CTRL-W, delete and backspace, and
2504 also for characters that wrap to the next line.
2505 Also: be able to undo CTRL-R (insert register).
2506 Possibly use 'backspace'="whole" for a mode where at least a <CR> that
2507 inserts autoindent is undone by a single <BS>.
2508- Use CTRL-G in Insert mode for an extra range of commands, like "g" in
2509 Normal mode.
2510- Make 'paste' work without resetting other options, but override their
2511 value. Avoids problems when changing files and modelines or autocommands
2512 are used.
2513- When typing CTRL-V and a digit higher than 2, only expect two digits.
2514- Insert binary numbers with CTRL-V b.
2515- Make it possible to undo <BS>, <C-W> and <C-U>. Bash uses CTRL-Y.
2516
2517
2518'cindent', 'smartindent':

Bram Moolenaard8e9bb22005-07-09 21:14:46 +000025228 Using "+" part of 'cinoptions' where it's not expected (Alexei Alexandrov):

25328 Wrong indent for ":" after a method with multiple lines:
2533 Foo::Foo (int one, int two)
2534 : something(4),
2535 somethingelse(3)
2536 {}
25379 Too much indent for "lulu": (Uwe Zeisberger)
2538 int main ()
2539 {
2540 if (lala)
2541 do
2542 ++(*lolo);
2543 while (lili
2544 && lele);
2545 lulu;
2546 }
25479 Function gets extra indent: (Jamax)
2548 void function(int param) {
2549 if (false)
2550 return;
2551 }
25529 brace not indented correctly:
2553 case 'c': if (cond)
2554 {
2555 Should align with "if" in case statement.
25567 Allow aligning a closing ")" with the line above, instead of the matching
2557 "(": (Riehm) if (asdfasdf &&
2558 asdf
2559 )
25608 Java: Inside an anonymous class, after an "else" or "try" the indent is
2561 too small. (Vincent Bergbauer)
25628 In C++ it's possible to have {} inside (): (Kirshna)
2563 func(
2564 new String[] {
2565 "asdf",
2566 "asdf"
2567 }
2568 );
25697 Separate "(0" option into inside/outside a function (Zellner):
2570 func(
2571 int x) // indent like "(4"
2572 {
2573 if (a
2574 && b) // indent like "(0"
25758 Strange problem with this code, "hello" is indented wrong: (Gary Holloway)
2576 main() { char foo[] = "/*";
2577 /* This is a comment; the indentation of C
2578 * source below this comment gets messed up due to the string above.
2579 */
2580 hello
25819 Using "{" in a comment: (Helmut Stiegler)
2582 if (a)
2583 {
2584 if (b)
2585 {
2586 // {
2587 }
2588 } <-- this is indented incorrect
25899 Wrong indent for cino=(4, removing the (void) fixes it: (Zellner)
2590 (void) MyFancyFunction(
2591 argument);
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00002592- Make smartindenting configurable. Add 'sioptions', e.g. '#' setting the
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002593 indent to 0 should be switched on/off.
25947 Support ANSI style function header, with each argument on its own line.
2595- "[p" and "]p" should use 'cindent' code if it's on (only for the first
2596 line).
2597- Add option to 'cindent' to set indent for comments outside of {}?
2598- Make a command to line up a comment after a code line with a previous
2599 comment after a code line. Can 'cindent' do this automatically?
26007 Add 'j' flag to 'formatoptions': Remove comment leader when joining lines.
2601- When 'cindent'ing a '}', showmatch is done before fixing the indent. It
2602 looks better when the indent is fixed before the showmatch. (Webb)
2603- Add option to make indenting work in comments too (for commented-out
2604 code), unless the line starts with "*".
2605- Don't use 'cindent' when doing formatting with "gq"?
2606- When formatting a comment after some text, insert the '*' for the new line
2607 (indent is correct if 'cindent' is set, but '*' doesn't get inserted).
26088 When 'comments' has both "s1:/*,mb:*,ex:*/" and "s1:(*,mb:*,ex:*)", the
2609 'x' flag always uses the first match. Need to continue looking for more
2610 matches of "*" and remember all characters that could end the comment.
2611- For smartindent: When typing 'else' line it up with matching 'if'.
2612- 'smartindent': allow patterns in 'cinwords', for e.g. TeX files, where
2613 lines start with "\item".
2614- Support this style of comments (with an option): (Brown)
2615 /* here is a comment that
2616 is just autoindented, and
2617 nothing else */
2618- Add words to 'cinwords' to reduce the indent, e.g., "end" or "fi".
26197 Use Tabs for the indent of starting lines, pad with spaces for
2620 continuation lines. Allows changing 'tabstop' without messing up the
2621 indents.
2622 And/or: Add option to copy indent as-is, without changing spaces to tabs.
2623 also for 'autoindent'. 'keeptabs': when set don't change the tabs and
2624 spaces used for indent, when the indent remains the same or increases.
2625
2626
2627Java:
26288 Can have {} constructs inside parens. Include changes from Steve
2629 Odendahl?
26308 Recognize "import java.util.Vector" and use $CLASSPATH to find files for
2631 "[i" commands and friends.
2632- For files found with 'include': handle "*" in included name, for Java.
2633 (Jason)
2634- How to make a "package java.util" cause all classes in the package to be
2635 searched? Also for "import java.util.*". (Mark Brophy)
2636
2637
2638'comments':
26398 When formatting C comments that are after code, the "*" isn't repeated
2640 like it's done when there is no code. And there is no automatic wrapping.
2641 Recognize comments that come after code. Should insert the comment leader
2642 when it's "#" or "//".
Bram Moolenaarce5e58e2005-01-19 22:24:34 +00002643 Other way around: when a C command starts with "* 4" the "*" is repeated
2644 while it should not. Use syntax HL comment recognition?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000026457 When using "comments=fg:--", Vim inserts three spaces for a new line.
2646 When hitting a TAB, these spaces could be removed.
26477 The 'n'esting flag doesn't do the indenting of the last (rightmost) item.
26486 Make strings in 'comments' option a RE, to be able to match more
2649 complicated things. (Phillipps) Use a special flag to indicate that a
2650 regexp is used.
26518 Make the 'comments' option with "/* * */" lines only repeat the "*" line
2652 when there is a "/*" before it? Or include this in 'cindent'?
2653
2654
2655Virtual edit:
26568 Make the horizontal scrollbar work to move the text further left.
26577 Add a mode where the cursor is only allowed to go one character after the
2658 end of the line?
26597 Allow specifying it separately for Tabs and beyond end-of-line?
2660
2661
2662Text objects:
26638 Add test script for text object commands "aw", "iW", etc.
Bram Moolenaar4399ef42005-02-12 14:29:27 +000026648 Add text object for part of a CamelHumedWord and under_scored_word.
2665 (Scott Graham) "ac" and "au"?
Bram Moolenaar5313dcb2005-02-22 08:56:13 +000026668 Add a text object for any kind of quoting, also with multi-byte
2667 characters. Option to specify what quotes are recognized (default: all)
Bram Moolenaar05159a02005-02-26 23:04:13 +00002668 use "aq" and "iq". Use 'quotepairs' to define pairs of quotes, like
2669 'matchpairs'?
Bram Moolenaar5313dcb2005-02-22 08:56:13 +000026708 Add text object for any kind of parens, also multi-byte ones.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000026717 Add text object for current search pattern: "a/" and "i/". Makes it
2672 possible to turn text highlighted for 'hlsearch' into a Visual area.
26738 Add "gp" and "gP" commands: insert text and make sure there is a single
2674 space before it, unless at the start of the line, and after it, unless at
2675 the end of the line or before a ".".
26767 Add objects with backwards extension? Use "I" and "A". Thus "2dAs"
2677 deletes the current and previous sentence. (Jens Paulus)
26787 Add "g{" and "g}" to move to the first/last character of a paragraph
2679 (instead of the line just before/after a paragraph as with "{" and "}").
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000026806 Ignore comment leaders for objects. Make "das" work in reply-email.
26815 Make it possible to use syntax group matches as a text object. For
2682 example, define a "ccItem" group, then do "da<ccItem>" to delete one.
2683 Or, maybe just define "dai", delete-an-item, to delete the syntax item the
2684 cursor is on.
2685
2686
2687Select mode:
26888 In blockwise mode, typed characters are inserted in front of the block,
2689 backspace deletes a column before the block. (Steve Hall)
26907 Alt-leftmouse starts block mode selection in MS Word.
2691 See http://www.vim.org/tips/tip.php?tip_id=743
26927 Add Cmdline-select mode. Like Select mode, but used on the command line.
2693 - Change gui_send_mouse_event() to pass on mouse events when 'mouse'
2694 contains 'C' or 'A'.
2695 - Catch mouse events in ex_getln.c. Also shift-cursor, etc., like in
2696 normal_cmd().
2697 - remember start and end of selection in cmdline_info.
2698 - Typing text replaces the selection.
2699
2700
2701Visual mode:
2702- When dragging the Visual selection with the mouse and 'scrolloff' is zero,
2703 behave like 'scrolloff' is one, so that the text scrolls when the pointer
2704 is in the top line.
27058 When using "I" or "A" in Visual block mode, short lines do not get the new
2706 text. make it possible to add the text to short lines too, with padding
2707 where needed.
27087 With a Visual block selected, "2x" deletes a block of double the width,
2709 "3y" yanks a block of triple width, etc.
27107 When selecting linewise, using "itext" should insert "text" at the start
2711 of each selected line.
27128 What is "R" supposed to do in Visual mode?
27138 Make Visual mode local to the buffer. Allow changing to another buffer.
2714 When starting a new Visual selection, remove the Visual selection in any
2715 other buffer. (Ron Aaron)
27168 Support dragging the Visual area to drop it somewhere else. (Ron Aaron,
2717 Ben Godfrey)
27187 Support dragging the Visual area to drop it in another program, and
2719 receive dropped text from another program. (Ben Godfrey)
27207 With blockwise Visual mode and "c", "C", "I", "A", etc., allow the use of
2721 a <CR>. The entered lines are repeated over the Visual area.
27227 CTRL-V :s should substitute only in the block, not to whole lines. (David
2723 Young is working on this)
27247 Filtering a block should only apply to the block, not to the whole lines.
Bram Moolenaared203462004-06-16 11:19:22 +00002725 When the number of lines is increased, add lines. When decreased, pad with
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002726 spaces or delete? Use ":`<,`>" on the command line.
27278 After filtering the Visual area, make "gv" select the filtered text?
2728 Currently "gv" only selects a single line, not useful.
27297 Don't move the cursor when scrolling? Needed when the selection should
2730 stay the same. Scroll to the cursor at any movement command. With an
2731 option!
27327 In Visual block mode, need to be able to define a corner on a position
2733 that doesn't have text? Also: when using the mouse, be able to select
2734 part of a TAB. Even more: Add a mode where the cursor can be on a screen
2735 position where there is no text. When typing, add spaces to fill the gap.
2736 Other solution: Always use curswant, so that you can move the cursor to
2737 the right column, and then use up/down movements to select the line,
2738 without changing the column.
27396 ":left" and ":right" should work in Visual block mode.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000027407 CTRL-I and CTRL-O should work in Visual mode, but only jump to marks in the
2741 current buffer.
27427 CTRL-A and CTRL-X should increase/decrease all numbers in the Visual area.
27436 In non-Block mode, "I" should insert the same text in front of each line,
2744 before the first non-blank, "gI" in column 1.
27456 In non-Block mode, "A" should append the same text after each line.
27466 ":'<,'>source" should read the selected lines and ":source" them.
27476 When in blockwise visual selection (CTRL-V), allow cursor to be placed
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00002748 right of the line. Could also allow cursor to be placed anywhere on a TAB
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002749 or other special character.
27506 Add commands to move selected text, without deselecting.
2751
2752
2753More advanced repeating commands:
2754- Add "." command for visual mode: redo last visual command (e.g. ":fmt").
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +000027557 Repeating "d:{cmd}" with "." doesn't work. (Benji Fisher) Somehow remember
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002756 the command line so that it can be repeated?
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00002757- Add "." command after operator: repeat last command of same operator. E.g.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002758 "c." will repeat last change, also when "x" used since then (Webb).
2759 "y." will repeat last yank.
2760 "c2." will repeat the last but one change?
2761 Also: keep history of Normal mode commands, add command to list the history
2762 and/or pick an older command.
2763- History stack for . command? Use "g." command.
2764
2765
2766Mappings and Abbreviations:
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000027678 When "0" is mapped (it is a movement command) this mapping should not be
2768 used after typing another number, e.g. "20l". (Charles Campbell)
2769 Is this possible without disabling the mapping of the following command?
27708 Should mapping <C-A> and <C-S-A> both work?
27717 ":abbr b byte", append "b " to an existing word still expands to "byte".
2772 This is Vi compatible, but can we avoid it anyway?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000027738 To make a mapping work with a prepended "x to select a register, store the
2774 last _typed_ register name and access it with "&.
27758 Add ":amap", like ":amenu".
27768 Add ":cab!", abbreviations that only apply to Command-line mode and not to
2777 entering search strings.
27788 Add a flag to ":abbrev" to eat the character that triggers the
2779 abbreviation. Thus "abb ab xxx" and typing "ab<Space>" inserts "xxx" and
2780 not the <Space>.
27818 Allow mapping of CTRL-@ (anywhere in the LHS).
27828 Give a warning when using CTRL-C in the lhs of a mapping. It will never
2783 (?) work.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000027848 Add a way to save a current mapping and restore it later. Use a function
2785 that returns the mapping command to restore it: mapcmd()? mapcheck() is
2786 not fool proof. How to handle ambiguous mappings?
27877 Add <0x8f> (hex), <033> (octal) and <123> (decimal) to <> notation?
27887 Allow mapping "Q" and "Q}" at the same time. Need to put a flag with "Q",
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00002789 that it needs an extra character before it can match. See Vile 'maplonger'
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002790 option.
27917 When someone tries to unmap with a trailing space, and it fails, try
2792 unmapping without the trailing space. Helps for ":unmap xx | unmap yy".
27937 Make it possible to map 'wildchar', but only when it's a special character
2794 (like CTRL-E). Currently it's only recognized when typed. Useful for
2795 mapping a key to do something and then completion.
27967 Add a mapping that works always, for remapping the keyboard.
27976 Context-sensitive abbreviations: Specify syntax group(s) in which the
2798 abbreviations are to be used.
2799- Add mappings that take arguments. Could work like the ":s" command. For
2800 example, for a mouse escape sequence:
2801 :mapexp <Esc>{\([0-9]*\),\([0-9]*\); H\1j\2l
2802- Make it possible to include a <Nul> in the lhs and rhs of a mapping.
2803- Add command to repeat a whole mapping ("." only repeats the last change in
2804 a mapping). Also: Repeat a whole insert command, including any mappings
2805 that it included. Sort-of automatic recording?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002806- Add an option to ":map" that makes it display the special keys in
2807 <> notation (e.g. <CR> instead of ^M). Or just always do this?
2808- Include an option (or flag to 'cpoptions') that makes errors in mappings
2809 not flush the rest of the mapping (like nvi does).
2810- Use context sensitiveness of completion to switch abbreviations and
2811 mappings off for :unab and :unmap.
28126 When using mappings in Insert mode, insert characters for incomplete
2813 mappings first, then remove them again when a mapping matches. Avoids
2814 that characters that are the start of some mapping are not shown until you
2815 hit another character.
2816- Add optional <Number> argument for mappings:
2817 :map <Number>q ^W^W<Number>G
2818 :map <Number>q<Number>t ^W^W<Number1-1>G<Number2>l
2819 :map q<Char> :s/<Char>/\u\0/g
2820 Or implicit:
2821 :map q <Register>d<Number>$
2822- Add mappings for replace mode: ":rmap". How do we then enter mappings for
2823 non-replace Insert mode?
2824- Add separate mappings for Visual-character/block/line mode?
28256 Alias for Normal mode commands, works like :substitute? Would allow
2826 mappings with arguments.
2827- Add 'mapstop' command, to stop recursive mappings.
2828- List mappings that have a raw escape sequence both with the name of the key
2829 for that escape sequence (if there is one) and the sequence itself.
2830- List mappings: Once with special keys listed as <>, once with meta chars as
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00002831 <M-a>, once with the byte values (octal?). Sort of "spell mapping" command?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002832- When entering mappings: Add the possibility to enter meta keys like they
2833 are displayed, within <>: <M-a>, <~@> or <|a>.
2834- Allow multiple arguments to :unmap.
2835- Command to show keys that are not used and available for mapping
2836 ":freekeys".
2837- Allow any character except white space in abbreviations lhs (Riehm).
2838
2839
2840Incsearch:
2841- Add a limit to the number of lines that are searched for 'incsearch'?
2842- When no match is found and the user types more, the screen is redrawn
2843 anyway. Could skip that. Esp. if the line wraps and the text is scrolled
2844 up every time.
2845- Temporarily open folds to show where the search ends up. Restore the
2846 folds when going to another line.
2847- When incsearch used and hitting return, no need to search again in many
2848 cases, saves a lot of time in big files. (Slootman wants to work on this?)
2849 When not using special characters, can continue search from the last match
2850 (or not at all, when there was no match). See oldmail/webb/in.872.
2851- With incsearch, use CTRL-N/CTRL-P to go to next/previous match, some other
2852 key to copy matched word to search pattern (Alexander Schmid).
2853
2854
2855Searching:
Bram Moolenaarb5bf5b82004-12-24 14:35:23 +000028567 Add "g/" and "gb" to search for a pattern in the Visually selected text?
2857 "g?" is already used for rot13.
Bram Moolenaar2641f772005-03-25 21:58:17 +000028588 Add a mechanism for recursiveness: "\@(([^()]*\@g[^()]*)\)". \@g stands
2859 for "go recursive here" and \@( \) marks the recursive part.
2860 Perl does it this way:
2861 $paren = qr/ \(( [^()] | (??{ $paren }) )* \) /x;
2862 Here $paren is evaluated when it's encountered. This is like a regexp
2863 inside a regexp. In the above terms it would be:
2864 \@((\([^()]\|\@g\)*)\)
Bram Moolenaarc998e3c2005-06-14 22:13:23 +000028657 Support for approximate-regexps to find similar words (agrep
2866 http://www.tgries.de/agrep/ tre: http://laurikari.net/tre/index.html).
Bram Moolenaarc0761132005-03-18 20:30:32 +000028678 Add an item for a big character range, so that one can search for a
2868 chinese character: \z[234-1234] or \z[XX-YY] or \z[0x23-0x234].
Bram Moolenaar1cd871b2004-12-19 22:46:22 +000028697 Add an item stack to allow matching (). One side is "push X on
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002870 the stack if previous atom matched". Other side is "match with top of
2871 stack, pop it when it matches". Use "\@pX" and "\@m"?
2872 Example: \((\@p).\{-}\@m\)*
28737 Add an option to accept a match at the cursor position. Also for
2874 search(). (Brett)
Bram Moolenaar1cd871b2004-12-19 22:46:22 +000028757 Add a flag to "/pat/" to discard an error. Useful to continue a mapping
2876 when a search fails. Could be "/pat/E" (e is already used for an offset).
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000028777 Add pattern item to use properties of Unicode characters. In Perl it's
2878 "\p{L}" for a letter. See Regular Expression Pocket Reference.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000028798 Would it be possible to allow ":23,45/pat/flags" to search for "pat" in
2880 lines 23 to 45? Or does this conflict with Ex range syntax?
28818 Allow identical pairs in 'matchpairs'. Restrict the search to the current
2882 line.
28837 Allow longer pairs in 'matchpairs'. Use ~/vim/macros/matchit.vim as an
2884 example.
28858 Make it possible to define the character that "%" checks for in
2886 #if/#endif. For nmake it's !if/!endif.
2887- For "%" command: set hierarchy for which things include other things that
2888 should be ignored (like "*/" or "#endif" inside /* */).
2889 Also: use "%" to jump from start to end of syntax region and back.
2890 Alternative: use matchit.vim
28918 "/:/e+1" gets stuck on a match at the end of the line. Do we care?
28928 A pattern like "\([^a]\+\)\+" takes an awful long time. Recognize that
2893 the recursive "\+" is meaningless and optimize for it.
2894 This one is also very slow on "/* some comment */": "^\/\*\(.*[^/]\)*$".
28957 Recognize "[a-z]", "[0-9]", etc. and replace them with the faster "\l" and
2896 "\d".
Bram Moolenaarc0197e22004-09-13 20:26:32 +000028977 Add a way to specify characters in <C-M> or <Key> form. Could be
2898 \%<C-M>.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000028998 Flags that apply to the whole pattern.
2900 This works for all places where a regexp is used.
2901 Add "\q" to not store this pattern as the last search pattern?
29028 Add an argument after ":s/pat/str/" for a range of matches. For example,
2903 ":s/pat/str/#3-4" to replace only the third and fourth "pat" in a line.
29048 Add an option not to use 'hlsearch' highlighting for ":s" and ":g"
2905 commands. (Kahn) It would work like ":noh" is used after that command.
2906 Also: An extra flag to do this once, and a flag to keep the existing
2907 search pattern.
2908- Add \%h{group-name}; to search for a specific highlight group.
2909 Add \%s{syntax-group}; to search for a specific syntax group.
2910- Support Perl regexp. Use PCRE (Perl Compatible RE) package. (Shade)
2911 Or translate the pattern to a Vim one.
2912 Don't switch on with an option for typed commands/mappings/functions, it's
2913 too confusing. Use "\@@" in the pattern, to avoid incompatibilities.
29147 Add POSIX regexp, like Nvi, with 'extended' option? It's like very-magic.
2915- Remember flags for backreferenced items, so that "*" can be used after it.
2916 Check with "\(\S\)\1\{3}". (Hemmerling)
2917- Add flags to search command (also for ":s"?):
2918 i ignore case
2919 I use case
2920 p use Perl regexp syntax (or POSIX?)
2921 v use Vi regexp syntax
2922 f forget pattern, don't keep it for "n" command
2923 F remember pattern, keep it for "n" command
2924 Perl uses these too:
2925 e evaluate the right side as an expression (Perl only)
2926 m multiple line expression (we don't need it)
2927 o compile only once (Perl only)
2928 s single line expression (we don't need it)
2929 x extended regexp (we don't need it)
2930 When used after ":g" command, backslash needed to avoid confusion with the
2931 following command.
2932 Add 'searchflags' for default flags (replaces 'gdefault').
2933- Add command to display the last used substitute pattern and last used
2934 pattern. (Margo) Maybe make it accessible through a register (like "/
2935 for search string)?
29367 Use T-search algorithm, to speed up searching for strings without special
2937 characters. See C't article, August 1997.
2938- Add 'fuzzycase' option, so that case doesn't matter, and '-' and '_' are
2939 equivalent (for Unix filenames).
2940- Add 'v' flag to search command: enter Visual mode, with the matching text
2941 as Visual area. (variation on idea from Bertin)
2942- Searching: "/this//that/" should find "that" after "this".
2943- Add global search commands: Instead of wrapping at the end of the buffer,
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00002944 they continue in another buffer. Use flag after search pattern:
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002945 a for the next file in the argument list
2946 f for file in the buffer list
2947 w for file edited in a window.
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00002948 e.g. "/pat/f". Then "n" and "N" work through files too. "f" flag also for
2949 ":s/pat/foo/f"??? Then when 'autowrite' and 'hidden' are both not set, ask
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002950 before saving files: "Save modified buffer "/path/file"? (Yes/Hide/No
2951 Save-all/hide-All/Quit) ".
2952- ":s/pat/foo/3": find 3rd match of "pat", like sed. (Thomas Koehler)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000029537 When searching with 'n' give message when getting back where the search
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00002954 first started. Remember start of search in '/ mark.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000029557 Add option that scrolls screen to put cursor in middle of screen after
2956 search always/when off-screen/never. And after a ":tag" command. Maybe
2957 specify how many lines below the screen causes a redraw with the cursor in
2958 the middle (default would be half a screen, zero means always).
29596 Support multiple search buffers, so macros can be made without side
2960 effects.
29617 From xvim: Allow a newline in search patterns (also for :s, can delete
2962 newline). Add BOW, EOW, NEWL, NLORANY, NLBUTANY, magic 'n' and 'r', etc.
2963 [not in xvim:] Add option to switch on matches crossing ONE line boundary.
Bram Moolenaar34cdc3e2005-05-18 22:24:46 +000029647 Add ":iselect", a combination of ":ilist" and ":tselect". (Aaron) (Zellner)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002965 Also ":dselect".
2966
2967
2968Undo:
Bram Moolenaar3fdfa4a2004-10-07 21:02:47 +00002969- Make it possible to undo all the commands from a mapping, including a
2970 trailing unfinished command, e.g. for ":map K iX^[r".
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002971- When accidentally hitting "R" instead of Ctrl-R, further Ctrl-R is not
2972 possible, even when typing <Esc> immediately. (Grahn) Also for "i", "a",
2973 etc. Postpone saving for undo until something is really inserted?
29748 When Inserting a lot of text, it can only be undone as a whole. Make undo
2975 sync points at every line or word. Could recognize the start of a new
2976 word (white space and then non-white space) and backspacing.
2977 Can already use CTRL-G u, but that requires remapping a lot of things.
29788 Make undo more memory-efficient: Compare text before and after change,
2979 only remember the lines that really changed.
29807 Add undo for a range of lines. Can change these back to a previous
2981 version without changing the rest of the file. Stop doing this when a
2982 change includes only some of these lines and changes the line count. Need
2983 to store these undo actions as a separate change that can be undone.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00002984- For u_save() include the column number. This can be used to set '[ and '].
2985 And in the future the undo can be made more efficient (Webb).
2986- In out-of-memory situations: Free allocated space in undo, and reduce the
2987 number of undo levels (with confirmation).
2988- Instead of [+], give the number of changes since the last write: [+123].
2989 When undoing to before the last write, change this to a negative number:
2990 [-99].
2991- With undo with simple line delete/insert: optimize screen updating.
2992- When executing macro's: Save each line for undo only once.
2993- Store undo info in a file that survives until the next edit. Then it's
2994 possible to undo to before the current editing session. Combined with
2995 viminfo?
2996- When doing a global substitute, causing almost all lines to be changed,
2997 undo info becomes very big. Put undo info in swap file??
2998
2999
3000Buffer list:
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000030017 Command to execute a command in another buffer: ":inbuf {bufname} {cmd}".
3002 Also for other windows: ":inwin {winnr} {cmd}". How to make sure that
3003 this works properly for all commands, and still be able to return to the
3004 current buffer/window? E.g.: ":inbuf xxx only".
30058 Add File.{recent_files} menu entries: Recently edited files.
3006 Ron Aaron has a plugin for this: mru.vim.
30078 Unix: Check all uses of fnamecmp() and fnamencmp() if they should check
3008 inode too.
30097 Add another number for a buffer, which is visible for the user. When
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003010 creating a new buffer, use the lowest number not in use (or the highest
3011 number in use plus one?).
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000030127 Offer some buffer selection from the command line? Like using ":ls" and
3013 asking for a buffer number. (Zachmann)
3014- When starting to edit a file that is already in the buffer list, use the
3015 file name argument for the new short file name. (Webb)
3016- Add an option to make ":bnext" and ":bprev" wrap around the end of the
3017 buffer list. Also for ":next" and ":prev"?
30187 Add argument to ":ls" which is a pattern for buffers to list.
3019 E.g. ":ls *.c". (Thompson)
30207 Add expansion of buffer names, so that "*.c" is expanded to all buffer
3021 names. Needed for ":bdel *.c", ":bunload *.c", etc.
30228 Support for <afile> where a buffer name is expected.
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +000030238 Some commands don't use line numbers, but buffer numbers. '$'
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003024 should then mean the number of the last buffer. E.g.: "4,$bdel".
30257 Add an option to mostly use slashes in file names. Separately for
3026 internal use and for when executing an external program?
3027
3028
3029Swap (.swp) files:
30308 If writing to the swap file fails, should try to open one in another
3031 directory from 'dir'. Useful in case the file system is full and when
3032 there are short file name problems.
30338 Also use the code to try using a short file name for the backup and swap
3034 file for the Win32 and Dos 32 bit versions.
30358 When a file is edited by root, add $LOGNAME to know who did su.
30368 When the edited file is a symlink, try to put the swap file in the same
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003037 dir as the actual file. Adjust FullName(). Avoids editing the same file
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003038 twice (e.g. when using quickfix). Also try to make the name of the backup
3039 file the same as the actual file?
3040 Use the code for resolve()?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000030417 When using 64 bit inode numbers, also store the top 32 bits. Add another
3042 field for this, using part of bo_fname[], to keep it compatible.
30437 When editing a file on removable media, should put swap file somewhere
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003044 else. Use something like 'r' flag in 'viminfo'. 'diravoid'?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003045 Also: Be able to specify minimum disk space, skip directory when not
3046 enough room.
30477 Add a configure check for which directory should be used: /tmp, /var/tmp
3048 or /var/preserve.
3049- Add an option to create a swap file only when making the first change to
3050 the buffer. (Liang) Or only when the buffer is not read-only.
3051- Add option to set "umask" for backup files and swap files (Antwerpen).
3052 'backupumask' and 'swapumask'? Or 'umaskback' and 'umaskswap'?
3053- When editing a readonly file, don't use a swap file but read parts from the
3054 original file. Also do this when the file is huge (>'maxmem'). We do
3055 need to load the file once to count the number of lines? Perhaps keep a
3056 cached list of which line is where.
3057
3058
3059Viminfo:
30607 Can probably remove the code that checks for a writable viminfo file,
3061 because we now do the chown() for root, and others can't overwrite someone
3062 else's viminfo file.
30638 Add argument to keep the list of buffers when Vim is started with a file
3064 name. (Schild)
30658 Keep the last used directory of the file browser (File/Open menu).
30668 Remember the last used register for "@@".
30678 Remember a list of last accessed files. To be used in the
3068 "File.Open Recent" menu. Default is to remember 10 files or so.
3069 Also remember which files have been read and written. How to display
3070 this?
30717 Also store the ". register (last inserted text).
30727 Make it possible to store buffer names in viminfo file relative to some
3073 directory, to make them portable over a network. (Aaron)
30746 Store a snapshot of the currently opened windows. So that when quitting
3075 Vim, and then starting again (without a file name argument), you see the
3076 same files in the windows. Use ":mksession" code?
3077- Make marks present in .viminfo usable as file marks: Display a list of
3078 "last visited files" and select one to jump to.
3079
3080
3081Modelines:
30828 Before trying to execute a modeline, check that it looks like one (valid
3083 option names). If it's very wrong, silently ignore it.
3084 Ignore a line that starts with "Subject: ".
3085- When an option value is coming from a modeline, do not carry it over to
3086 another edited file? Would need to remember the value from before the
3087 modeline setting.
3088- Allow setting a variable from a modeline? Only allow using fixed strings,
3089 no function calls, to avoid a security problem.
3090- Allow ":doauto BufRead x.cpp" in modelines, to execute autocommands for
3091 .cpp files.
3092- Support the "abbreviate" command in modelines (Kearns). Careful for
3093 characters after <Esc>, that is a security leak.
3094- Add option setting to ask user if he wants to have the modelines executed
3095 or not. Same for .exrc in local dir.
3096
3097
Bram Moolenaard5bc83f2005-12-07 21:07:59 +00003098Sessions:
30998 DOS/Windows: ":mksession" generates a "cd" command where "aa\#bb" means
3100 directory "#bb" in "aa", but it's used as "aa#bb". (Ronald Hoellwarth)
31017 When there is a "help.txt" window in a session file, restoring that
3102 session will not get the "LOCAL ADDITIONS" back.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000031038 With ":mksession" always store the 'sessionoptions' option, even when
3104 "options" isn't in it. (St-Amant)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000031058 When using ":mksession", also store a command to reset all options to
3106 their default value, before setting the options that are not at their
3107 default value.
Bram Moolenaar9ba0eb82005-06-13 22:28:56 +000031087 With ":mksession" also store the tag stack and jump history. (Michal
3109 Malecki)
Bram Moolenaard5bc83f2005-12-07 21:07:59 +000031107 Persistent variables: "p:var"; stored in viminfo file and sessions files.
3111
3112
3113Options:
31147 ":with option=value | command": temporarily set an option value and
3115 restore it after the command has executed.
31167 Setting an option always sets "w_set_curswant", while this is only
3117 required for a few options. Only do it for those options to avoid the
3118 side effect.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000031198 Make "old" number options that really give a number of effects into string
3120 options that are a comma separated list. The old number values should
3121 also be supported.
31228 Add commands to save and restore an option, which also preserves the flag
3123 that marks if the option was set. Useful to keep the effect of setting
3124 'compatible' after ":syntax on" has been used.
31257 There is 'titleold', why is there no 'iconold'? (Chazelas)
31267 Make 'scrolloff' a global-local option, so that it can be different in the
3127 quickfix window, for example. (Gary Holloway)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003128
3129
3130External commands:
31318 When filtering text, redirect stderr so that it can't mess up the screen
3132 and Vim doesn't need to redraw it. Also for ":r !cmd".
31334 Set separate shell for ":sh", piping "range!filter", reading text "r !ls"
3134 and writing text "w !wc". (Deutsche) Allow arguments for fast start (e.g.
3135 -f).
31364 Allow direct execution, without using a shell.
31374 Run an external command in the background. But how about I/O in the GUI?
3138 Careful: don't turn Vim into a shell!
31394 Add feature to disable using a shell or external commands.
3140
3141
3142Multiple Windows:
31437 "vim -oO file ..." use both horizontal and vertical splits.
31448 Add CTRL-W T: go to the top window in the column of the current window.
3145 And CTRL-W B: go to bottom window.
31467 Use CTRL-W <Tab>, like alt-tab, to switch between buffers. Repeat <Tab>
3147 to select another buffer (only loaded ones?), <BS> to go back, <Enter> to
3148 select buffer, <Esc> to go back to original buffer.
31497 Add a 'winfixwidth' option, similar to 'winfixheight'.
31506 Add an option to resize the shell when splitting and/or closing a window.
3151 ":vsp" would make the shell wider by as many columns as needed for the new
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003152 window. Specify a maximum size (or use the screen size). ":close" would
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003153 shrink the shell by as many columns as come available. (Demirel)
31547 When starting Vim several times, instantiate a Vim server, that allows
3155 communication between the different Vims. Feels like one Vim running with
3156 multiple top-level windows. Esp. useful when Vim is started from an IDE
3157 too. Requires some form of inter process communication.
3158- Support a connection to an external viewer. Could call the viewer
3159 automatically after some seconds of non-activity, or with a command.
3160 Allow some way of reporting scrolling and cursor positioning in the viewer
3161 to Vim, so that the link between the viewed and edited text can be made.
3162
3163
3164Marks:
31658 When cursor is first moved because of scrolling, set a mark at this
3166 position. (Rimon Barr) Use '-.
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +000031678 Add a command to jump to a mark and make the motion inclusive. g'm and g`m?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000031688 The '" mark is set to the first line, even when doing ":next" a few times.
3169 Only set the '" mark when the cursor was really moved in a file.
31708 Make `` and '', which would position the new cursor position in the middle
3171 of the window, restore the old topline (or relative position) from when
3172 the mark was set.
31737 Make a list of file marks in a separate window. For listing all buffers,
3174 matching tags, errors, etc. Normal commands to move around. Add commands
3175 to jump to the mark (in current window or new window). Start it with
3176 ":browse marks"?
31776 Add a menu that lists the Marks like ":marks". (Amerige)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000031787 For ":jumps", ":tags" and ":marks", for not loaded buffers, remember the
3179 text at the mark. Highlight the column with the mark.
31807 Highlight each mark in some way (With "Mark" highlight group).
3181 Or display marks in a separate column, like 'number' does.
31827 Use d"m to delete rectangular area from cursor to mark m (like Vile's \m
3183 command).
31847 Try to keep marks in the same position when:
3185 - replacing with a line break, like in ":s/pat/^M/", move marks after the
3186 line break column to the next line. (Acevedo)
3187 - inserting/deleting characters in a line.
31885 Include marks for start/end of the current word and section. Useful in
3189 mappings.
31906 Add "unnamed mark" feature: Like marks for the ":g" command, but place and
3191 unplace them with commands before doing something with the lines.
3192 Highlight the marked lines somehow.
3193
3194
3195Digraphs:
31967 Make "ga" show the digraph for a character, if it exists.
3197 Also the keymap?
3198- Make it possible to enter "r<C-E>" and "r<C-Y>" (get character from line
3199 below/above).
3200- Use digraph table to tell Vim about the collating sequence of special
3201 characters?
Bram Moolenaar3fdfa4a2004-10-07 21:02:47 +000032028 Add command to remove one or more (all) digraphs. (Brown)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000032037 Support different sets of digraphs (depending on the character set?). At
3204 least Latin1/Unicode, Latin-2, MS-DOS (esp. for Win32).
3205
3206
3207Writing files:
3208- In vim_rename(), should lock "from" file when deleting "to" file for
3209 systems other than Amiga. Avoids problems with unexpected longname to
3210 shortname conversion.
32118 write mch_isdevice() for Amiga, Mac, VMS, etc.
32128 When appending to a file, Vim should also make a backup and a 'patchmode'
3213 file.
32148 'backupskip' doesn't write a backup file at all, a bit dangerous for some
3215 applications. Add 'backupelsewhere' to write a backup file in another
3216 directory? Or add a flag to 'backupdir'?
32177 The 'directory' option supports changing path separators to "%" to make
3218 file names unique, also support this for 'backupdir'. (Mikolaj Machowski)
32196 Add an option to write a new, numbered, backup file each time. Like
3220 'patchmode', e.g., 'backupmode'.
32216 Make it possible to write 'patchmode' files to a different directory.
3222 E.g., ":set patchmode=~/backups/*.orig". (Thomas)
32236 Add an option to prepend something to the backup file name. E.g., "#".
3224 Or maybe allow a function to modify the backup file name?
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +000032258 Only make a backup when overwriting a file for the first time. Avoids
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003226 losing the original when writing twice. (Slootman)
32277 On non-Unix machines, also overwrite the original file in some situations
3228 (file system full, it's a link on an NFS partition).
32297 When editing a file, check that it has been change outside of Vim more
3230 often, not only when writing over it. E.g., at the time the swap file is
3231 flushed. Or every ten seconds or so (use the time of day, check it before
3232 waiting for a character to be typed).
32338 When a file was changed since editing started, show this in the status
3234 line of the window, like "[time]".
3235 Make it easier to reload all outdated files that don't have changes.
3236 Automatic and/or with a command.
3237
3238
3239Substitute:
Bram Moolenaar3f770472005-06-19 22:56:27 +000032408 Substitute with hex/unicode number "\%xff" and "\%uabcd". Just like
3241 "\%uabcd" in search pattern.
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +000032428 Make it easier to replace in all files in the argument list. E.g.:
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003243 ":argsub/oldword/newword/". Works like ":argdo %s/oldword/newword/g|w".
3244- :s///p prints the line after a substitution.
3245- With :s///c replace \&, ~, etc. when showing the replacement pattern.
32468 With :s///c allow scrolling horizontally when 'nowrap' is effective.
3247 Also allow a count before the scrolling keys.
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003248- Add number option to ":s//2": replace second occurrence of string? Or:
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003249 :s///N substitutes N times.
3250- Add answers to ":substitute" with 'c' flag, used in a ":global", e.g.:
3251 ":g/pat1/s/pat2/pat3/cg": 'A' do all remaining replacements, 'Q' don't do
3252 any replacements, 'u' undo last substitution.
32537 Substitute in a block of text. Use {line}.{column} notation in an Ex
3254 range, e.g.: ":1.3,$.5s" means to substitute from line 1 column 3 to the
3255 last line column 5.
32565 Add commands to bookmark lines, display bookmarks, remove bookmarks,
3257 operate on lines with bookmarks, etc. Like ":global" but with the
3258 possibility to keep the bookmarks and use them with several commands.
3259 (Stanislav Sitar)
3260
3261
3262Mouse support:
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000032638 Add 'o' flag to 'mouse'?
32647 Be able to set a 'mouseshape' for the popup menu.
32658 Add 'mouse' flag, which sets a behavior like Visual mode, but automatic
3266 yanking at the button-up event. Or like Select mode, but typing gets you
3267 out of Select mode, instead of replacing the text. (Bhaskar)
32687 Checkout sysmouse() for FreeBSD console mouse support.
3269- Implement mouse support for the Amiga console.
3270- Using right mouse button to extend a blockwise selection should attach to
3271 the nearest corner of the rectangle (four possible corners).
3272- Precede mouse click by a number to simulate double clicks?!?
3273- When mouse click after 'r' command, get character that was pointed to.
3274
3275
3276Crypt and security:
32778 Also crypt the swapfile, each block separately. Change mf_write() and
3278 mf_read(). How to get b_p_key to these functions?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003279
3280
3281Argument list:
32826 Add command to put all filenames from the tag files in the argument list.
3283 When given an argument, only use the files where that argument matches
3284 (like `grep -l ident`) and jump to the first match.
32856 Add command to form an args list from all the buffers?
3286
3287
3288Registers:
32898 Don't display empty registers with ":display". (Etienne)
32908 Make the # register writable, so that it can be restored after jumping
3291 around in windows.
32928 Add put command that overwrites existing text. Should also work for
3293 blocks. Useful to move text around in a table. Works like using "R ^R r"
3294 for every line.
32956 When yanking into the unnamed registers several times, somehow make the
3296 previous contents also available (like it's done for deleting). What
3297 register names to use? g"1, g"2, etc.?
3298- When appending to a register, also report the total resulting number of
3299 lines. Or just say "99 more lines yanked", add the "more".
3300- When inserting a register in Insert mode with CTRL-R, don't insert comment
3301 leader when line wraps?
3302- The ":@r" commands should take a range and execute the register for each
3303 line in the range.
3304- Add "P" command to insert contents of unnamed register, move selected text
3305 to position of previous deleted (to swap foo and bar in " + foo")
33068 Should be able to yank and delete into the "/ register.
3307 How to take care of the flags (offset, magic)?
Bram Moolenaared203462004-06-16 11:19:22 +00003308
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003309
3310Debug mode:
33117 Add something to enable debugging when a remote message is received.
33128 Add breakpoints for setting an option
Bram Moolenaar69a7cb42004-06-20 12:51:53 +000033138 Add breakpoints for assigning to a variable.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000033147 Add a watchpoint in the debug mode: An expression that breaks execution
Bram Moolenaar15d0a8c2004-09-06 17:44:46 +00003315 when evaluating to non-zero. Add the "watchadd expr" command, stop when
3316 the value of the expression changes. ":watchdel" deletes an item,
3317 ":watchlist" lists the items. (Charles Campbell)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000033187 Store the history from debug mode in viminfo.
33197 Make the debug mode history available with histget() et al.
3320
3321
3322Various improvements:
Bram Moolenaar87b774d2005-07-20 22:04:36 +000033237 [t to move to previous xml/html tag (like "vatov"), ]t to move to next
3324 ("vatv").
Bram Moolenaar342337a2005-07-21 21:11:17 +000033257 [< to move to previous xml/html tag, e.g., previous <li>. ]< to move to
3326 next <li>, ]< to next </li>, [< to previous </li>.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000033278 Add ":rename" command: rename the file of the current buffer and rename
3328 the buffer. Buffer may be modified.
Bram Moolenaar86b68352004-12-27 21:59:20 +00003329- Perhaps ":cexpr" could read errors from a list?
3330 Add %b to 'errorformat': buffer number. (Yegappan Lakshmanan / Suresh
3331 Govindachar)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000033326 In the quickfix window statusline add the command used to get the list of
3333 errors, e.g. ":make foo", ":grep something *.c".
33346 Python interface: add vim.message() function. (Michal Vitecek, 2002 Nov 5)
33357 Support using ":vert" with User commands. Add expandable items <vert>.
3336 Do the same for ":browse" and ":confirm"?
3337 For ":silent" and ":debug" apply to the whole user command.
33387 Allow a window not to have a statusline. Makes it possible to use a
3339 window as a buffer-tab selection.
33407 Add an invisible buffer which can be edited. For use in scripts that want
3341 to manipulate text without changing the window layout.
33428 Add a command to revert to the saved version of file; undo or redo until
3343 all changes are gone.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000033447 Add a ":cpfile", go in the other direction as ":cnfile".
33456 "vim -q -" should read the list of errors from stdin. (Gautam Mudunuri)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000033468 Add "--remote-fail": When contacting the server fails, exit Vim.
3347 Add "--remote-self": When contacting the server fails, do it in this Vim.
3348 Overrules the default of "--remote-send" to fail and "--remote" to do it
3349 in this Vim.
33508 When Vim was started without a server, make it possible to start one, as
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003351 if the "--servername" argument was given. ":startserver <name>"?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000033528 No address range can be used before the command modifiers. This makes
3353 them difficult to use in a menu for Visual mode. Accept the range and
3354 have it apply to the following command.
33558 Add the possibility to set 'fileformats' to force a format and strip other
3356 CR characters. For example, for "dos" files remove CR characters at the
3357 end of the line, so that a file with mixed line endings is cleaned up.
3358 To just not display the CR characters: Add a flag to 'display'?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000033597 Some compilers give error messages in which the file name does not have a
3360 path. Be able to specify that 'path' is used for these files.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000033617 Xterm sends <Esc>O3F for <M-End>. Similarly for other <M-Home>, <M-Left>,
3362 etc. Combinations of Alt, Ctrl and Shift are also possible. Recognize
3363 these to avoid inserting the raw byte sequence, handle like the key
3364 without modifier (unless mapped).
33658 Add ":breakdel *": delete all breakpoints.
33667 Support ":browse edit" in console, using explorer.vim?
33676 Add "gG": like what "gj" is to "j": go to the N'th window line.
33688 Add command like ":normal" that accepts <Key> notation like ":map".
33699 Support ACLs on more systems.
33707 Add ModeMsgVisual, ModeMsgInsert, etc. so that each mode message can be
3371 highlighted differently.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000033727 Add a message area for the user. Set some option to reserve space (above
3373 the command line?). Use an ":echouser" command to display the message
3374 (truncated to fit in the space).
33757 Add %s to 'keywordprg': replace with word under the cursor. (Zellner)
33768 Support printing on Unix. Can use "lpansi.c" as an example. (Bookout)
33778 Add put command that replaces the text under it. Esp. for blockwise
3378 Visual mode.
Bram Moolenaared203462004-06-16 11:19:22 +000033797 Enhance termresponse stuff: Add t_CV(?): pattern of term response, use
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003380 regexp: "\e\[[>?][0-9;]*c", but only check just after sending t_RV.
33817 Add "g|" command: move to N'th column from the left margin (after wrapping
3382 and applying 'leftcol'). Works as "|" like what "g0" is to "0".
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000033837 Support setting 'equalprg' to a user function name.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000033847 Highlight the characters after the end-of-line differently.
33857 When 'whichwrap' contains "l", "$dl" should join lines?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000033868 Add an argument to configure to use $CFLAGS and not modify it? (Mooney)
33878 Enabling features is a mix of configure arguments and defines in
3388 feature.h. How to make this consistent? Feature.h is required for
3389 non-unix systems. Perhaps let configure define CONF_XXX, and use #ifdef
3390 CONF_XXX in feature.h? Then what should min-features and max-features do?
33918 Add "g^E" and "g^Y", to scroll a screen-full line up and down.
33926 Add ":timer" command, to set a command to be executed at a certain
3393 interval, or once after some time has elapsed. (Aaron)
33948 Add ":confirm" handling in open_exfile(), for when file already exists.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000033958 When quitting with changed files, make the dialog list the changed file
3396 and allow "write all", "discard all", "write some". The last one would
3397 then ask "write" or "discard" for each changed file. Patch in HierAssist
3398 does something like this. (Shah)
33997 Use growarray for replace stack.
34007 Have a look at viH (Hellenic or Greek version of Vim). But a solution
3401 outside of Vim might be satisfactory (Haritsis).
34023 Make "2d%" work like "d%d%" instead of "d2%"?
34038 Make "more" prompt accept command characters, like "hit-enter" prompt?
3404 Or extend it with more commands, like "less": 'b' for back, 'j' for one
3405 line down, etc.
34068 For the "--more--" prompt, support the 'b'ack command for more commands.
3407 Possible implementation: Do it at a very low level, caching the lines that
3408 are on the screen (with highlight attributes). Avoids that changes have
3409 to be made for all functions that list something.
34107 "g CTRL-O" jumps back to last used buffer. Skip CTRL-O jumps in the same
3411 buffer. Make jumplist remember the last ten accessed buffers?
3412- Keep a list of most recently used files for each window, use "[o" to go
3413 back (older file) and "]n" to go forward (newer file) (like ^O and ^I for
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003414 jumps). (Webb) Use ":files" and ":ls" to list the files in history order.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000034157 Add a history of recently accessed buffer. Maybe make "2 CTRL-^" jump to
3416 the 2nd previously visited buffer, "3 CTRL-^" to the third, etc. Or use
3417 "3 g CTRL-^" for this?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003418- Add code to disable the CAPS key when going from Insert to Normal mode.
3419- Set date/protection/etc. of the patchfile the same as the original file.
3420- Use growarray for termcodes[] in term.c
3421- Add <window-99>, like <cword> but use filename of 99'th window.
34227 Add a way to change an operator to always work characterwise-inclusive
3423 (like "v" makes the operator characterwise-exclusive). "x" could be used.
3424- Make a set of operations on list of names: expand wildcards, replace home
3425 dir, append a string, delete a string, etc.
3426- Remove mktemp() and use tmpname() only? Ctags does this.
3427- When replacing environment variables, and there is one that is not set,
3428 turn it into an empty string? Only when expanding options? (Hiebert)
3429- Option to set command to be executed instead of producing a beep (e.g. to
3430 call "play newbeep.au").
3431- Add option to show the current function name in the status line. More or
3432 less what you find with "[[k", like how 'cindent' recognizes a function.
3433 (Bhatt).
3434- "[r" and "]r": like "p" and "P", but replace instead of insert (esp. for
3435 blockwise registers).
3436- Add 'timecheck' option, on by default. Makes it possible to switch off the
3437 timestamp warning and question. (Dodt).
3438- Add an option to set the time after which Vim should check the timestamps
3439 of the files. Only check when an event occurs (e.g., character typed,
3440 mouse moved). Useful for non-GUI versions where keyboard focus isn't
3441 noticeable.
34429 When using ":w <fname>" it's possible that this file is loaded in another
3443 buffer. Give a warning right away, don't wait for a shell command.
3444- Make 'smartcase' work even though 'ic' isn't set (Webb).
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000034457 When formatting text, allow to break the line at a number of characters.
3446 Use an option for this: 'breakchars'? Useful for formatting Fortran code.
3447- Add flag to 'formatoptions' to be able to format book-style paragraphs
3448 (first line of paragraph has larger indent, no empty lines between
3449 paragraphs). Complements the '2' flag. Use '>' flag when larger indent
3450 starts a new paragraph, use '<' flag when smaller indent starts a new
3451 paragraph. Both start a new paragraph on any indent change.
Bram Moolenaar269ec652004-07-29 08:43:53 +000034527 Add a way to define an item list with a pattern in 'formatoptions'. The
3453 'n' flag doesn't work for "6.3" or "6a.".
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000034548 Add 'formatexpr' option: Used for formatting operator "gq" instead of the
Bram Moolenaara5792f52005-11-23 21:25:05 +00003455 builtin formatting or 'formatprg'. Or use a string that starts with "="
3456 in 'formatprg': "=MyFormat()".
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000034578 Allow using a trailing space to signal a paragraph that continues on the
3458 next line (MIME text/plain; format=flowed, RFC 2646). Can be used for
3459 continuous formatting. Could use 'autoformat' option, which specifies a
3460 regexp which triggers auto-formatting (for one line).
3461 ":set autoformat=\\s$".
3462- Be able to redefine where a sentence stops. Use a regexp pattern?
Bram Moolenaar5313dcb2005-02-22 08:56:13 +00003463- Support multi-byte characters for sentences. Example from Ben Peterson.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000034647 Add command "g)" to go to the end of a sentence, "g(" to go back to the
3465 end of a sentence. (Servatius Brandt)
3466- Be able to redefine where a paragraph starts. For "[[" where the '{' is
3467 not in column 1.
34686 Add ":cdprev": go back to the previous directory. Need to remember a
3469 stack of previous directories. We also need ":cdnext".
34707 Should ":cd" for MS-DOS go to $HOME, when it's defined?
3471- Make "gq<CR>" work on the last line in the file. Maybe for every operator?
34728 findmatchlimit() should be able to skip comments. Solves problem of
3473 matching the '{' in /* if (foo) { */ (Fiveash)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003474- Add more redirecting of Ex commands:
Bram Moolenaarce5e58e2005-01-19 22:24:34 +00003475 :redir #> bufname
3476 :redir #>> bufname (append)
Bram Moolenaarbee0c5b2005-02-07 22:03:36 +00003477- Give error message when starting :redir: twice or using END when no
3478 redirection was active.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003479- Setting of options, specifically for a buffer or window, with
3480 ":set window.option" or ":set buffer.option=val". Or use ":buffer.set".
3481 Also: "buffer.map <F1> quit".
34826 Would it be possible to change the color of the cursor in the Win32
3483 console? (Klaus Hast)
3484- Add :delcr command:
3485 *:delcr*
3486 :[range]delcr[!] Check [range] lines (default: whole buffer) for lines
3487 ending in <CR>. If all lines end in <CR>, or [!] is
3488 used, remove the <CR> at the end of lines in [range].
3489 A CTRL-Z at the end of the file is removed. If
3490 [range] is omitted, or it is the whole file, and all
3491 lines end in <CR> 'textmode' is set. {not in Vi}
3492- Should integrate addstar() and file_pat_to_reg_pat().
3493- When working over a serial line with 7 bit characters, remove meta
3494 characters from 'isprint'.
3495- Use fchdir() in init_homedir(), like in FullName().
3496- In win_update(), when the GUI is active, always use the scrolling area.
3497 Avoid that the last status line is deleted and needs to be redrawn.
3498- That "cTx" fails when the cursor is just after 'x' is Vi compatible, but
3499 may not be what you expect. Add a flag in 'cpoptions' for this? More
3500 general: Add an option to allow "c" to work with a null motion.
3501- Give better error messages by using errno (strerror()).
3502- Give "Usage:" error message when command used with wrong arguments (like
3503 Nvi).
3504- Make 'restorescreen' option also work for xterm (and others), replaces the
3505 SAVE_XTERM_SCREEN define.
35067 Support for ":winpos" In xterm: report the current window position.
3507- Give warning message when using ":set t_xx=asdf" for a termcap code that
3508 Vim doesn't know about. Add flag in 'shortmess'?
35096 Add ":che <file>", list all the include paths which lead to this file.
3510- For a commandline that has several commands (:s, :d, etc.) summarize the
3511 changes all together instead of for each command (e.g. for the rot13
3512 macro).
3513- Add command like "[I" that also shows the tree of included files.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003514- ":set sm^L" results in ":set s", because short names of options are also
3515 expanded. Is there a better way to do this?
3516- Add ":@!" command, to ":@" like what ":source!" is to ":source".
35178 Add ":@:!": repeat last command with forceit set.
3518- Should be possible to write to a device, e.g. ":w! /dev/null".
3519- Add 't_normal': Used whenever t_me, t_se, t_ue or t_Zr is empty.
3520- ":cab map test ^V| je", ":cunab map" doesn't work. This is vi compatible!
3521- CTRL-W CTRL-E and CTRL-W CTRL-Y should move the current window up or down
3522 if it is not the first or last window.
3523- Include-file-search commands should look in the loaded buffer of a file (if
3524 there is one) instead of the file itself.
35257 Change 'nrformats' to include the leader for each format. Example:
3526 nrformats=hex:$,binary:b,octal:0
3527 Add setting of 'nrformats' to syntax files.
3528- 'path' can become very long, don't use NameBuff for expansion.
3529- When unhiding a hidden buffer, put the same line at top of the window as
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003530 the one before hiding it. Or: keep the same relative cursor position (so
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003531 many percent down the windows).
3532- Make it possible for the 'showbreak' to be displayed at the end of the
3533 line. Use a comma to separate the part at the end and the start of the
3534 line? Highlight the linebreak characters, add flag in 'highlight'.
3535- Some string options should be expanded if they have wildcards, e.g.
3536 'dictionary' when it is "*.h".
3537- Use a specific type for number and boolean options, making it possible to
3538 change it for specific machines (e.g. when a long is 64 bit).
3539- Add option for <Insert> in replace mode going to normal mode. (Nugent)
3540- Add a next/previous possibility to "[^I" and friends.
3541- Add possibility to change the HOME directory. Use the directory from the
3542 passwd file? (Antwerpen)
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000035438 Add commands to push and pop all or individual options. ":setpush tw",
3544 ":setpop tw", ":setpush all". Maybe pushing/popping all options is
3545 sufficient. ":setflush" resets the option stack?
3546 How to handle an aborted mapping? Remember position in tag stack when
3547 mapping starts, restore it when an error aborts the mapping?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003548- Change ":fixdel" into option 'fixdel', t_del will be adjusted each time
3549 t_bs is set? (Webb)
3550- "gc": goto character, move absolute character positions forward, also
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003551 counting newlines. "gC" goes backwards (Weigert).
3552- When doing CTRL-^, redraw buffer with the same topline. (Demirel) Store
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003553 cursor row and window height to redraw cursor at same percentage of window
3554 (Webb).
3555- Besides remembering the last used line number of a file, also remember the
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003556 column. Use it with CTRL-^ et. al.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003557- Check for non-digits when setting a number option (careful when entering
3558 hex codes like 0xff).
3559- Add option to make "." redo the "@r" command, instead of the last command
3560 executed by it. Also to make "." redo the whole mapping. Basically: redo
3561 the last TYPED command.
3562- Support URL links for ^X^F in Insert mode, like for "gf".
3563- Support %name% expansion for "gf" on Windows.
3564- Make "gf" work on "file://c:/path/name". "file:/c:/" and "file:///c:/"
3565 should also work?
3566- Add 'urlpath', used like 'path' for when "gf" used on an URL?
35678 When using "gf" on an absolute file name, while editing a remote file
3568 (starts with scp:// or http://) should prepend the method and machine
3569 name.
3570- When finding an URL or file name, and it doesn't exist, try removing a
3571 trailing '.'.
3572- Add ":path" command modifier. Should work for every command that takes a
3573 file name argument, to search for the file name in 'path'. Use
3574 find_file_in_path().
3575- Highlight control characters on the screen: Shows the difference between
3576 CTRL-X and "^" followed by "X" (Colon).
3577- Integrate parsing of cmdline command and parsing for expansion.
3578- Create a program that can translate a .swp file from any machine into a
3579 form usable by Vim on the current machine.
3580- Add ":noro" command: Reset 'ro' flag for all buffers, except ones that have
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003581 a readonly file. ":noro!" will reset all 'ro' flags.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003582- Add a variant of CTRL-V that stops interpretation of more than one
3583 character. For entering mappings on the command line where a key contains
3584 several special characters, e.g. a trailing newline.
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003585- Add regex for 'paragraphs' and 'sections': 'parare' and 'sectre'. Combine
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003586 the two into a regex for searching. (Ned Konz)
3587- Make '2' option in 'formatoptions' also work inside comments.
3588- Add 's' flag to 'formatoptions': Do not break when inside a string. (Dodt)
3589- When window size changed (with the mouse) and made too small, set it back
3590 to the minimal size.
3591- Add "]>" and "[<", shift comment at end of line (command; /* comment */).
3592- Should not call cursorcmd() for each vgetc() in getcmdline().
3593- ":split file1 file2" adds two more windows (Webb).
3594- Don't give message "Incomplete last line" when editing binary file.
3595- Add ":a", ":i" for preloading of named buffers.
3596- Allow autowrite when doing ":e file" (with an option 'eaw').
3597- Allow a "+command" argument before each file name in the Vim command line:
3598 "vim +123 file1 +234 file2 +345 file3". ???
3599- When entering text, keep other windows on same buffer updated (when a line
3600 entered)?
3601- Check out how screen does output optimizing. Apparently this is possible
3602 as an output filter.
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003603- In dosub() regexec is called twice for the same line. Try to avoid this.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003604- Window updating from memline.c: insert/delete/replace line.
3605- Optimize ml_append() for speed, esp. for reading a file.
3606- V..c should keep indent when 'ai' is set, just like [count]cc.
3607- Updatescript() can be done faster with a string instead of a char.
3608- Screen updating is inefficient with CTRL-F and CTRL-B when there are long
3609 lines.
3610- Uppercase characters in ex commands can be made lowercase?
36118 Add option to show characters in text not as "|A" but as decimal ("^129"),
3612 hex ("\x81") or octal ("\201") or meta (M-x). Nvi has the 'octal' option
3613 to switch from hex to octal. Vile can show unprintable characters in hex
3614 or in octal.
36157 Tighter integration with xxd to edit binary files. Make it more
3616 easy/obvious to use. Command line argument?
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003617- How does vi detect whether a filter has messed up the screen? Check source.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003618 After ":w !command" a wait_return?
3619- Improve screen updating code for doput() (use s_ins()).
3620- With 'p' command on last line: scroll screen up (also for terminals without
3621 insert line command).
3622- Use insert/delete char when terminal supports it.
3623- Optimize screen redraw for slow terminals.
3624- Optimize "dw" for long row of spaces (say, 30000).
3625- Add "-d null" for editing from a script file without displaying.
3626- In Insert mode: Remember the characters that were removed with backspace
3627 and re-insert them one at a time with <key1>, all together with <key2>.
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003628- Amiga: Add possibility to set a keymap. The code in amiga.c does not work
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003629 yet.
3630- Implement 'redraw' option.
3631- Add special code to 'sections' option to define something else but '{' or
3632 '}' as the start of a section (e.g. one shiftwidth to the right).
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000036337 Allow using Vim in a pipe: "ls | vim -u xxx.vim - | yyy". Only needs
3634 implementing ":w" to stdout in the buffer that was read from stdin.
Bram Moolenaar2641f772005-03-25 21:58:17 +00003635 Perhaps writing to stdout will work, since stderr is used for the terminal
3636 I/O.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000036378 Allow opening an unnamed buffer with ":e !cmd" and ":sp !cmd". Vile can
3638 do it.
3639- Add commands like ]] and [[ that do not include the line jumped to.
3640- When :unab without matching "from" part and several matching "to" parts,
3641 delete the entry that was used last, instead of the first in the list.
3642- Add text justification option.
3643- Set boolean options on/off with ":set paste=off", ":set paste=on".
3644- After "inv"ing an option show the value: ":set invpaste" gives "paste is
3645 off".
3646- Check handling of CTRL-V and '\' for ":" commands that do not have TRLBAR.
3647- When a file cannot be opened but does exist, give error message.
3648- Amiga: When 'r' protection bit is not set, file can still be opened but
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003649 gives read errors. Check protection before opening.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003650- When writing check for file exists but no permission, "Permission denied".
3651- If file does not exists, check if directory exists.
3652- MSDOS: although t_cv and t_ci are not set, do invert char under cursor.
3653- Settings edit mode: make file with ":set opt=xx", edit it, parse it as ex
3654 commands.
3655- ":set -w all": list one option per line.
3656- Amiga: test for 'w' flag when reading a file.
3657- :table command (Webb)
3658- Add new operator: clear, make area white (replace with spaces): "g ".
3659- Make it possible for a user to define a new operator. Implementation with
3660 internal scripting language or Perl?
3661- Add command to ":read" a file at a certain column (blockwise read?).
3662- Add sort of replace mode where case is taken from the old text (Goldfarb).
3663- Allow multiple arguments for ":read", read all the files.
3664- Support for tabs in specific columns: ":set tabcol=8,20,34,56" (Demirel).
3665- Add 'searchdir' option: Directories to search for file name being edited
3666 (Demirel).
3667- Modifier for the put command: Change to linewise, charwise, blockwise, etc.
3668- Add commands for saving and restoring options ":set save" "set restore",
3669 for use in macro's and the like.
3670- Keep output from listings in a window, so you can have a look at it while
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003671 working in another window. Put cmdline in a separate window?
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003672- Add possibility to put output of ex commands in a buffer or file, e.g. for
3673 ":set all". ":r :set all"?
3674- 'edit' option: When off changing the buffer is not possible (Really
3675 read-only mode).
3676- When the 'equalalways' option is set, creating a new window should not
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003677 result in windows to become bigger. Deleting a window should not result in
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003678 a window to become smaller (Webb).
3679- When resizing the whole Vim window, the windows inside should be resized
3680 proportionally (Webb).
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003681- Include options directly in option table, no indirect pointers. Use
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003682 mkopttab to make option table?
3683- When doing ":w dir", where "dir" is a directory name, write the current
3684 file into that directory, with the current file name (without the path)?
3685- Support for 'dictionary's that are sorted, makes access a lot faster
3686 (Haritsis).
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003687- Add "^Vrx" on the command line, replace with contents of register x. Used
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003688 instead of CTRL-R to make repeating possible. (Marinichev)
3689- Add "^Vb" on the command line, replace with word before or under the
3690 cursor?
3691- Option to make a .swp file only when a change is made (Templeton).
3692- Support mapping for replace mode and "r" command (Vi doesn't do this)?
36935 Add 'ignorefilecase' option: Ignore case when expanding file names.
3694 ":e ma<Tab>" would also find "Makefile" on Unix.
Bram Moolenaar69a7cb42004-06-20 12:51:53 +000036958 Sorting of filenames for completion is wrong on systems that ignore
3696 case of filenames. Add 'ignorefncase' option. When set, case in
3697 filenames is ignored for sorting them. Patch by Mike Williams:
3698 ~/vim/patches/ignorefncase. Also change what matches? Or use another
3699 option name.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +000037008 Should be able to compile Vim in another directory, with $(srcdir) set to
3701 where the sources are. Add $(srcdir) in the Makefile in a lot of places.
3702 (Netherton)
37036 Make it configurable when "J" inserts a space or not. Should not add a
3704 space after "(", for example.
37055 When inserting spaces after the end-of-line for 'virtualedit', use tabs
3706 when the user wants this (e.g., add a "tab" field to 'virtualedit').
3707 (Servatius Brandt)
3708
3709
3710From Elvis:
3711- Use "instman.sh" to install manpages?
3712- Add ":alias" command.
3713- fontchanges recognized "\\fB" etc.
3714- Search patterns:
3715 \@ match word under cursor.
3716 but do:
3717 \@w match the word under the cursor?
3718 \@W match the WORD under the cursor?
37198 ":window" command:
3720 :win + next window (up)
3721 :win ++ idem, wrapping
3722 :win - previous window (down)
3723 :win -- idem, wrapping
3724 :win nr to window number "nr"
3725 :win name to window editing buffer "name"
37267 ":cc" compiles a single file (default: current one). 'ccprg' option is
3727 program to use with ":cc". Use ":compile" instead of ":cc"?
3728
3729
3730From Nvi:
3731- 'searchincr' option, alias for 'incsearch'?
3732- 'leftright' option, alias for 'nowrap'?
3733- Have a look at "vi/doc/vi.chart", for Nvi specialties.
37348 Add 'keytime', time in 1/10 sec for mapping timeout?
3735- Add 'filec' option as an alternative for 'wildchar'.
37366 Support Nvi command names as an alias:
3737 :bg :hide
3738 :fg fname :buf fname (with 'hidden' set?)
3739 :dis b :ls
3740 :Edit fname :split fname
3741 :Fg fname :sbuf fname (with 'hidden' set?)
3742 :Next :snext (can't do this, already use :Next)
3743 :Previous :sprevious
3744 :Tag :stag
3745
3746
3747From xvi:
3748- CTRL-_ : swap 8th bit of character.
3749- Add egrep-like regex type, like xvi (Ned Konz) or Perl (Emmanuel Mogenet)
3750
3751
3752From vile:
3753- When horizontal scrolling, use '>' for lines continuing right of a window.
3754- Support putting .swp files in /tmp: Command in rc.local to move .swp files
3755 from /tmp to some directory before deleting files.
3756
3757
3758Far future and "big" extensions:
Bram Moolenaar07d4d732005-10-03 22:04:08 +00003759- Instead of using a Makefile and autoconf, use a simple shell script to
3760 find the C compiler and do everything with C code. Translate something
3761 like an Aap recipe and configure.in to C. Avoids depending on Python,
3762 thus will work everywhere. With batch file to find the C compiler it
3763 would also work on MS-Windows.
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003764- Make it easy to setup Vim for groups of users: novice vi users, novice
3765 Vim users, C programmers, xterm users, GUI users,...
3766- Change layout of blocks in swap file: Text at the start, with '\n' in
3767 between lines (just load the file without changes, except for Mac).
3768 Indexes for lines are from the end of the block backwards. It's the
3769 current layout mirrored.
3770- Make it possible to edit a register, in a window, like a buffer.
3771- Add stuff to syntax highlighting to change the text (upper-case keywords,
3772 set indent, define other highlighting, etc.).
3773- Mode to keep C-code formatted all the time (sort of on-line indent).
3774- Several top-level windows in one Vim session. Be able to use a different
3775 font in each top-level window.
3776- Allow editing above start and below end of buffer (flag in 'virtualedit').
3777- Smart cut/paste: recognize words and adjust spaces before/after them.
3778- Add open mode, use it when terminal has no cursor positioning.
3779- Special "drawing mode": a line is drawn where the cursor is moved to.
3780 Backspace deletes along the line (from jvim).
3781- Implement ":Bset", set option in all buffers. Also ":Wset", set in all
3782 windows, ":Aset, set in all arguments and ":Tset", set in all files
3783 mentioned in the tags file.
3784 Add buffer/arg range, like in ":2,5B%s/..." (do we really need this???)
3785 Add search string: "B/*.c/%s/.."? Or ":F/*.c/%s/.."?
3786- Support for underlining (underscore-BS-char), bold (char-BS-char) and other
3787 standout modes switched on/off with , 'overstrike' option (Reiter).
3788- Add vertical mode (Paul Jury, Demirel): "5vdw" deletes a word in five
3789 lines, "3vitextESC" will insert "text" in three lines, etc..
37904 Recognize l, #, p as 'flags' to EX commands:
3791 :g/RE/#l shall print lines with line numbers and in list format.
3792 :g/RE/dp shall print lines that are deleted.
3793 POSIX: Commands where flags shall apply to all lines written: list,
Bram Moolenaar13fcaaf2005-04-15 21:13:42 +00003794 number, open, print, substitute, visual, &, z. For other commands, flags
Bram Moolenaar071d4272004-06-13 20:20:40 +00003795 shall apply to the current line after the command completes. Examples:
3796 :7,10j #l Join the lines 7-10 and print the result in list
3797- Allow two or more users to edit the same file at the same time. Changes
3798 are reflected in each Vim immediately. Could work with local files but
3799 also over the internet. See http://www.codingmonkeys.de/subethaedit/.
